Congratulation to your Class 2A Boys State Champions and State Tournament Recap
Another State Tournament completed! This was my seventh State Tournament I have been to and covered for MileHigh Prep Report.
Congratulations to the Limon Badgers on winning the Class 2A State Tournament and snapping a 60-year drought for a State Title. Limon battled a ton of adversity along the way this season and battled some great teams to win the State Championship.
I felt this year the Class 2A field was loaded and I could make a case for all 8 teams in the Class 2A field to win the State Title. The opening round of the State Tournament had 3 exciting games. Limon defeated Heritage Christian 43 to 38 in a physical game that saw Heritage Christian make a run at the end to nearly knock off Limon. Sanford defeated Crowley County 52 to 43. At the end of the second quarter Crowley County was dominating the game but in the second half we saw Sanford make a huge run and step up on defense and get the 9-point win. Merino defeated Denver Christian 61 to 52. Merino had a solid game plan and played excellent defense the entire game. Denver Christian had the height advantage, but Merino was able to play to their strength and get the win.
The consolation semifinals saw Heritage Christian defeat Fowler 63 to 39. This was a close game at halftime but would get away from Fowler in the second half. Crowley County would defeat Denver Christian 38 to 35. This was a phenomenal game. Crowley County got their first tournament win in three years with a 11-point second half comeback.
The Championship Semifinals saw Sanford defeat Merino 58 to 39. This started as a close game and even saw Merino take a 12 to 9 lead into the second quarter. Sanford answered with an 18 to 8 second quarter and a 13-10 third quarter to never look back. The game of the night was Limon defeating Simla 49 to 42. This was a back-and-forth game with each team taking a lead in the first half. Limon after halftime took control of the game and would use clutch free throws to win the game. This was a very physical game and Blue Arena was rocking for this game.
Championship Saturday saw Crowley County take home some hardware defeating Heritage Christian 45 to 37. Crowley County trailed after the first quarter 12 to 10 but won the next three quarters 12-9, 10-8, and 13-8 to secure the Consolation Championship. The third-place game was a fun one! Simla would defeat Merino 77 to 73. This was the highest scoring game of the tournament. This game saw a combined 25 3-pointers made, 14 by Merino and 11 by Simla. Merino would hold the halftime lead 41 to 36 behind some great shooting of Jaxson Samber and Tyler Miller. Simla would take control in the second half behind some great defense of T.J Eurich and clutch shooting of Brent Bowker and Caston Cox. Simla would outscore Merino in the second half 41 to 32 to get the win. The State Championship featured a pair of programs with a ton of history in Limon and Sanford. Limon would set the ton early in this game and never look back. Aiden Kollath got things started hitting a trio of 3-pointers that got the Limon offense rolling. Sanford would try and cut into the lead in the second quarter but had a rough night from the field. Sanford after halftime looked like the shooting were gone with Cash Caldon scoring a quick 5 points but Limon still held a solid lead after three quarters. Limon would secure the win with a big fourth quarter from Jordan Rockwell and Limon would win the state championship 54 to 27.
Once again, Congratulations to Limon on winning the Class 2A State Championship.
