CLASS 2A BASEBALL WEEKEND REPORT – MAY 3RD-6TH
BY: KERRY SHERMAN

It’s the next to last weekend of regular season play in Class 2A and the schedule makers loaded it up with incredible match-ups. Saturday’s slate alone could rival most postseason dates. All of the rankings used in this report come from the Friday morning release of CHSAA’s Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY

18 St. Mary’s @ #8 Buena Vista (DH)

St. Mary’s just lost a doubleheader to #19 Colorado Springs Christian, who is tied with Buena Vista atop
the Tri-Peaks standings, with the Pirates falling 4-3 and 2-1 on Tuesday. Miscues were costly in both
games, as the Pirates committed a total of seven errors, walked 18, hit two, and uncorked seven wild
pitches. Cole Eberhardt scored three runs on the day. Buena Vista had its eight-game winning streak
snapped on Tuesday, as Salida pulled out a 16-15 win in extra innings. Leading 11-4, the Demons saw
Salida take the lead with nine in the bottom of the fourth. VB retook the lead with four in the sixth, only to see the Spartans tie it with two in the bottom half. Tied at 15, Salida walked it off in the bottom of the eighth. Knox Reid went 5-6 in the contest for the Demons.

34 Rocky Ford @ #7 Fowler (DH)

Rocky Ford has some work to do to get into the postseason bracket and taking a win from the Grizzlies would be a huge start. The Meloneers have won two of their last three, including a 15-0 defeat of 1A Manzanola on Wednesday, but overall, they are just 2-4 in the last six. Isaiah Vasquez Gallegos and Shayne Gonzales combined to one-hit Manzy. Vasquez Gallegos also had a team-high three RBI. Fowler has won four straight, the last two coming against #33 Crowley County by scores of 10-1 and 16-3. Weston Johnson drove in four runs in the first of those games, and Gage Gottbehuet did the same in the
second.

13 Dayspring Christian @ #31 SkyView Academy

Dayspring Christian is part of a three-way tie for fourth in the Mile High, one game ahead of SkyView
Academy in the standings. The Eagles have won four in a row, outslugging #30 Byers 17-15 on
Wednesday. Owen Steward homered and drove in five, while Gavin Bohl left the yard, collecting three
RBI, as the Eagles held on for the win. Byers scored five in the bottom of the seventh to put a scare into
the Eagles. SkyView Academy broke a three-game slide with a 14-4 victory over 3A Manual on Tuesday. The Hawks plated 12 of their runs in the final three innings, with Logen Meyers driving in four on the
day.

22 Sedgwick County @ #29 Wray (DH)

Sedgwick County has won its last three, outscoring 1A Peetz and 1A Prairie by a combined tally of 49-6
along the way. Tate Renquist drove in four runs in both games of the doubleheader against Prairie, and Roman Kirk had five RBI in the nightcap. Wray has lost nine straight after being swept by #5 Holyoke (14-6, 10-1) on Tuesday. Freshman Gabe Kechter’s double was the lone hit for the Eagles in the second game of the set.

SATURDAY

4 Peyton @ #1 Limon (DH)

Peyton sandwiched a pair of wins over #23 Dolores Huerta Prep around an 8-3 decision over #6
Burlington to build its current three-game winning streak. AJ Kranz and Bryce Love both homered in the 14-8 victory over DHP last Thursday. Kranz also had a triple and drove in five, while Love had four RBI. Limon run-ruled Goodland (KS) twice on Tuesday, 12-2 and 11-1. Keon Bandy smashed his fourth homer of the season in the opener, and Jordan Rockwell allowed one unearned run on three hits in game two. Limon’s last regular season loss was to Peyton late last year.

11 Yuma @ #5 Holyoke (DH)

A short two-game winning streak for Yuma came to an end when the Outlaws dropped a 22-17 contest to

20 Wiggins in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday. It was their fourth loss in the last six.

Silas Baucke collected four RBI, giving the junior 45 in his career. Lennox Huwa and Angel Escobar had
three RBI apiece. Colby Weber went 3-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, and three stolen bases for
Holyoke in the 10-1 win over Wray on Tuesday. He also tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The
Dragons have won six of their last eight.

17 Ellicott @ #19 Colorado Springs Christian (DH)

Ellicott’s 10-3 win over Calhan on Tuesday broke a three-game slide by the Thunderhawks. Two of the
losses had been to Buena Vista, and now they’re facing the other co-leader in the Tri-Peaks. A five-run top of the first propelled the Thunderhawks to the win on Tuesday, with Logan Wilson having a big game. Wilson hit a pair of solo home runs in his three-hit day. The pair of one-run victories over St. Mary’s pushed the winning streak of CSCS to three, with Micah Davies picking up the win in the opener and Ben Garl collecting the save. Garl turned around and earned the win in game two, with Jimmy Phillips closing it out for the save.

12 Monte Vista @ #24 Trinidad (DH)

Monte Vista and Trinidad are both unbeaten in Southern Peaks play, with a three-game lead over third place Sanford. The Pirates have won eight straight following an 11-8 victory over #25 Rye on Tuesday. Monte Vista scored three in the top of the eighth to get the extra inning win, and benefited from eight Thunderbolt errors in the contest. Jeremiah Baumgardner went 3-5 with three runs scored. Trinidad has had two weeks to steam after having its six-game winning streak snapped by #15 Ignacio in a doubleheader sweep on April 20th
. The Miners lost the opener 13-11 in nine innings, and followed that with a 16-7 defeat in the nightcap. Brett Kendall and Alan Meraz each hit their first career homers in the first game.

25 Rye @ #14 Swink (DH)

While #2 Las Animas leads the Santa Fe, there’s quite a jumble behind the Trojans which includes Rye and Swink. The Thunderbolts are a game and a half back, alone in second, while Swink is tied with
Fowler for third, another game behind Rye. The T-bolts have dropped five straight, with the most recent being the 11-8 defeat by Monte Vista. Brandon Benz homered and drove in two in that loss. Swink has put up 64 runs and allowed four in its current three-game winning streak. The Lions swept Walsenburg (22-3, 18-0) last Friday, and blasted Custer County 24-1 on Tuesday. Hunter Bauserman twirled a gem in the second game against Walsenburg, throwing a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in the five inning
complete game.
