
CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – FRIDAY

With data changing very quickly, our focus in Class 2A will return to daily report through the end of the regular season, next Tuesday. Several games on Friday got an early start, as teams try to beat the incoming inclement weather. The rankings included in this report come from the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index that was released prior to the start of play.

#19 Rye @ #34 Rocky Ford (DH)
Rye won the opening game of the doubleheader by a 13-1 score, with Branson Burbidge going 3-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. Burbidge also collected the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in five innings. It was the second straight win for the Thunderbolts, building upon a 5-4 victory over #3 Las Animas on Tuesday. The loss was the third in a row for the Meloneers, who are fighting for one of the final regional playoff spots.
#13 Swink @ #8 Fowler (DH)
Fowler is clinging to the final regional hosting position and the Grizzlies entered game one looking to bounce back from a 7-4 loss to #4 Peyton on Tuesday. Fowler gave up all seven runs in the third inning in that contest. Joe Salvo drove in two runs for the Grizzlies, and also worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Swink dominated #27 Dolores Huerta Prep 17-2 on Wednesday, making it two consecutive wins for the Lions. Nick Paolucci scored three times and had three RBI, while also earning the victory with two no-hit innings.
#6 Buena Vista @ #26 Colorado Springs Christian (DH)
Buena Vista avenged a walk-off loss to 3A #42 Salida, returning the favor on Tuesday with a 5-4 walk-off of its own against the Spartans. The Demons, who have won three straight and 11 of their last 12, scored four of their runs in the final three innings, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Julian Lopez-Olsen worked the final two innings to get the victory. CSCS has lost three of its last four, including a wild 16-14 defeat by 3A #45 Woodland Park on Monday. The Lions scored six in the top of the first and held a 14-5 lead after tacking on seven in the top of the fourth, but Woodland Park rallied with 11 unanswered. Mike Sandlin had three hits for CSCS, including a triple, and two RBI, while Jace Velasquez crossed the plate three times.
#11 Dawson School @ 3A #16 Englewood
Dawson School bounced back from a 9-2 defeat by #2 Denver Christian on Tuesday to hammer 3A #49 Jefferson 23-2 on Thursday. Milo Richtel had a monster game, going 4-5 at the plate with a homer, two doubles, six RBI, and three runs scored. Dawson doubled and drove in three. Englewood won its fifth straight, beating 3A #39 Arvada 11-4 on Monday. The Pirates got nine in the pivotal sixth inning to blow the game open. Grant Pebbles had three RBI and three runs scored.
