Class 2A Baseball State Tournament Predictions

As I have stated in the past baseball predictions and especially HS baseball predictions are tough. Just look at my 2A regional predictions last week and plenty of upsets and surprises happen. I think we have 8 solid teams at State this year. I will give my predictions for the first weekend of play and then I will post my entire bracket filled out at the end. Remember, good luck to all teams this weekend! We will have team capsules out for all 8 teams tomorrow.

This is the first year we get a double elimination tournament. Teams will have to play 3 games to move to next week so pitching depth will be key.

Winners Bracket First Round

#1 Limon over #8 Buena Vista

Limon has been on a roll all season. Ignacio played Limon tough in the regional finals game not getting pushed to the run rule. Buena Vista played well in the regional finals to get past Fowler and look for the Ace of BV to try and spring the upset. I will be very interested to see how teams handle pitching this weekend.

#12 Lyons over #13 Swink

I believe I said I wouldn’t be surprised if these teams reached the state tournament and here they are. Swink upset Peyton and Lyons upset Holyoke. Now these two teams square off and look for a great game at 9:30am. This should be a very competitive game and I could see either team advance.

#3 Las Animas over #11 Dayspring Christian

Las Animas took care of business to advance to State and Dayspring Christian was able to pitch well holding opponents to just 2 runs all weekend. I think this could be a very interesting matchup. I think Las Animas has the pitching depth to make a deep run but cannot overlook the opening round opponent. Dayspring Christian will also need their pitchers to be on point to get another upset.

#2 Denver Christian over #7 Monte Vista

Both teams that hosted advanced into the State Tournament. Denver Christian was tested by Meeker in their regional final getting the 5-0 win. Monte Vista needed 9 innings to get past Dawson School and walked it off. Monte Vista will need a stellar pitching performance to upset Denver Christian. Experience will be the difference in this game and Denver Christian has that.
