Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Recap and Preview

This week we take a look at the early season results and upcoming games for the top 15 teams according to MileHigh Prep Reports Rankings. We have already seen some top matchups and look forward to another weekend of great games.

Sedgwick County (3-0)

Sedgwick County is currently on a 3 game win streak to begin the season. Their first game was against Briggsdale where they won in 3. They then faced Haxtun where they also won in 3. The Cougars then went on the road to Weldon Valley where they go their third win of the season in 3. Sedgwick County will be looking to continue their win streak as their next opponent will be Flaming at home on 9/3.

Leading the Cougars so far this season are Abigail Dille (Sr) who has 6 total blocks, 24 digs, 18 kills and 23 receptions, Piper Buettenback (So) who has 2 total blocks and 15 assists, Keyana Ehnes who has 2 total blocks, 7 serving aces, 16 kills and 35 receptions, Ryen Carlson who  has 6 serving aces, 16 digs, and 32 assists, and Lainee Nein (Jr) who has 3 serving aces, 19 digs, 15 assists, 19 kills and 23 receptions.

Simla (3-0)

The Cubs start off their season with a 3-0 record after tournament play on 8/24. Simla beat Liberty Common, Weldon Valley, and Wiggins all in 2. The team will be looking to continue their winning streak as they will be facing Byers on 8/29 on the road and then will play Limon in their first home game on 8/31.

Wiggins (3-1)

Wiggins is off to a strong start for the 2024 season. They were able to win their first two games against Valley and McClave in 2, but then lost to Simla in 2. The Tigers bounced back and then won their game against Byers 3-0. Wiggins will be looking to continue their wins this week when they face Platte Valley on 8/29.

Colorado Springs Christian (1-0)

Colorado Springs Christian got their first win of the season this week against Discovery Canyon on the road, 3-1. This is a good start for the Lions and they will be looking to continue adding wins to their record. Net week they will face Eagle Ridge Academy on 9/3, Liberty on 9/5 and Resurrection Christian on 9/7.

Stat leaders for the beginning of the season for the Lions are Abi Howard (Sr) who has 2 total blocks, 2 serving aces, 2 assists, and 9 kills, Rachel Nash (Sr) who has 1 total block, Abigail Perry (Sr) who has 1 total block, 5 serving aces, 12 digs, 14 assists, and 10 kills, Jordyn Rollins (Jr) who has 5 serving aces, 15 digs, 6 assists, and 31 receptions, Rose Ross (So) who has 10 digs 7 kills and 6 receptions, and Madelyn Pauls who has 8 receptions. 

Meeker (2-2)

Meeker is showing some mixed success to start the season. The Cowboys were able to get a win to start their season against Roaring Fork 2-1. They lost their second game which was against Glenwood Springs 2-0, got the win over Pagosa 2-0, and then lost against Steamboat Springs 2-1 to end the first weekend of play. Meeker will be looking to add a win to their record this next week where they will face De Beque on 9/6.

Leaders for the Cowboys are Reese Clatterbaugh (Sr) who has 9 total blocks, 6 serving aces, and 14 kills, Adison Selle (Sr) who has 1 total block and 11 kills, Rylee Sullivan (Jr) who has 7 serving aces, 25 kills, and 68 receptions, Sydnie Ross (Sr) who has 4 serving aces, Taylor Garcia (Sr) who has 70 digs, 1 assist, and 68 receptions, Graycee Cravens (Sr) who has 22 digs and 29 assists, Jacey Follman (Jr) who has 26 assists, and Braydin Raley (Jr) who has 25 receptions.

Fowler (1-1)

The Grizzlies start their season off with two very close games. Their first was against Swink on the road where Fowler managed to get the win 3-2. Their next game was against The Vanguard School where the Grizzlies battled but lost the game 3-2. Fowler will be looking to get the win for their first home game on 8/29 against Manitou Springs before they are back on the road.

Fowler does not currently have any stats available.

Swink (1-1)

Swink is so far split on their record to start the season. The Lions lost their first game against Fowler in a close game of 3-2. Swink was then able to bounce back and get the win against Las Animas on the road 3-1. The ladies will be looking to get more wins on their record and will be facing McClave on 8/29 and Crowley County on 9/3, where both games will be at home.

Stat leaders for the Lions are Taylor Mendenhall (Jr) who had 4 total blocks and 11 kills, Daisy Heberlie (So) who has 2 total blocks, Kashlynn Blasingame (So) who had 2 total blocks, 13 digs, and 13 assists, Briana McElroy (Jr) who has 2 serving aces and 20 assists, Madelyn Bamber (Jr) who has 2 serving aces and 7 kills, Larriana Taggert (So) who has 16 digs, 2 assists and 6 receptions, Emma Gacnik (So) who has 12 digs and 5 receptions, and Jocelynn James (Jr) who has 6 receptions.

Holyoke (1-1)

The Dragons start their season with a 1-1 record. They lost their first game against Idalia 3-0, but then came back and beat Brush 3-1. Holyoke will be looking to add more wins to their record as they have a big weekend and will be facing Haxtun on 8/29, Fleming on 8/31, Arickaree on 8/31 and Merino on 9/3.

Calhan (1-1)

Calhan currently has a 1-1 record to start their season. The Bulldogs won their first game of the season against Kiowa 3-1 but lost their second game against Banning Lewis 3-1. Calhan will be facing Monument Academy on 8/29 and TCSS on 9/3 where the team will be looking to get some more wins under their belt before the fast-paced season hits.

Front Range Christian (2-2)

The Falcons won their first game of the season against Rocky Mountain Lutheran 2-0. They then lost to Windsor Charter Academy 2-0, beat ACA 2-0 and then lost again to Banning Lewis 2-0. Front Range Christian will be looking to add another win to their record this weekend when they face Evangel Christian Academy on 8/30 at home.

Rye (1-0)

Rye captured a solid first win of the season yesterday against St. Mary’s. The game was a close one and ended with the Thunderbolt victory 3-2. Rye will be looking to continue their success this week and will be facing Woodland Park on 8/29 on the road and then will see Las Animas on 9/3 at home.

Rye currently does not have stats available.

Hoehne (3-2)

The Farmers are kicked off their season with two wins, their first against Las Animas 3-0 and their second against Monte Vista 2-0. Hoehne then fell to Sargent 2-0 but was able to bounce back and get the win against Sangre de Cristo 2-0. Their most recent game was against La Veta, where Hoehne lost 3-1 at home. Hoehne will be looking to bounce back again after their second loss and will try to get wins against Crowley County on 8/29 and La Junta on 9/3.

Leading the farmers on the stat board are Aspen Garrison (Jr) who has 5 total blocks, 4 serving aces, and 19 kills, Paisley San Roman (Fr) who has 3 total blocks, Braylee Foster (So) who has 1 total block, 17 kills, and 15 receptions, Phoenix San Roman (Sr) who has 6 serving aces, 36 digs, and 47 assists, Ellegra Gutirrez ( Sr) who has 4 serving aces, 37 digs, 24 kills and 42 receptions, Cadence Doering (Jr) who has 32 digs, 6 assists and 77 receptions, and Mikenna Dasko (Jr) who has 17 assists.

Vail Christian (1-0)

Vail Chrisitan begins their 2024 season with a good win over North fork 3-2.  They will be facing a tough opponent in Lake County this week on 8/30 where the Saints will be looking to get the win over Lake County and continue their success.

Stat leaders for the Saints so far this season are Betty Bartok (Jr) who has 1 total block and 9 kills, Olivia Zajac (So) who has 1 total block, TA Kohrmann (So) who has 1 total block, Jessie Allen (Sr) who has 3 serving aces, 28 digs, 4 assists, and 52 receptions, Sam Bates (So ) who has 1 serving ace and 17 receptions, Tenley Brasington (So) who has 1 serving ace, 14 digs, and 19 assists, Mary McClarrinon (So) who has 19 digs, 19 kills and 21 receptions, and Noelle Razee (Sr) who has 11 kills.

Lyons (0-1)

Lyons did not start off their season the way they hoped for when they lost to Forge Christian in a close game that ended 3-2. The Lions will be looking to rebound and find success in the next couple of games where they will be facing Loveland Classical on 8/29 and GVCA on 9/4.

Gilpin County (1-0)

The Eagles start of their season with a solid win against Lake County last weekend at home. Gilpin County will be looking to continue this success and will be fighting to add wins to their record when they face South Park and Cedaredge on 8/30, and Ignacio on 8/31.

Leader so far fir the Eagles are Jiselle Osteboe (Sr) who has 1 total block and 7 kills, Elise Vincent (Jr) who has 1 total block, 2 serving aces, 12 assists, 8 kills, and 12 receptions, Joei Sutton (Sr) who has 1 serving ace and 12 assists, Faith Ramsey (Sr) who has 1 serving ace, 9 receptions, and 8 digs, Makenzie Marr (Sr) who has 11 digs, and Lizzie Westbrook (Sr) who has 9 digs and 5 kills.
