Class 3A Softball Weekly Recap and Preview

As we enter the 2024 softball season, many teams have already played several games. This week we take a look at our top 16 teams’ wins and losses as well as upcoming opponents and current stat leaders for these teams.

1. Eaton (6-0)

The season kicked off for Eaton on 8/20 against Wellington. Eaton was able to start their season with a win of 10-0. The Reds then played Meeker, Lamar, Rocky Ford and Delta from 8/23 – 8/23 where they were able to win each game, 23-4, 12-2, 13-1, and 13-1 respectively. Their most recent game was against Berthoud on 8/27 where Eaton won 15-4. The Reds next game will be against Severance on 8/29 where they will be looking to add another win to their record and continue their dominant season.

Stat leaders so far this season are Kiauna Smith (Sr) who currently has 3 home runs, 6 stolen bases, 12 runs, 11 hits and 11 RBI, Johanna Galvan who has 3 home runs, a 1.17 ERA, and 13 RBI, McKenzie Powell (Sr) who had 1 home run and a 1.75 ERA, Zoe Hamilton (Sr) who had 5 stolen bases, and 12 runs, and10 hits, Emma Anderson (So) who had 4 stolen bases, 13 runs, 15 hits, and 12 RBI, and Bria Foster who has a 2.10 ERA and 8 hits.

2. Strasburg (4-1)

Strasburg did not have the start to their season that they were hoping to have. Their first game resulted in a loss to Elizabeth 5-3, but the Indians were able to bounce back and win their next four games. Strasburg has been able to beat Meeker 12-0, Delta 15-1, Peak to Peak 9-8 and Limon 17-0 so far this season. They will be looking to keep adding to their win streak this week as they face Gunnison on 8/30 and Rocky Ford on 8/31.

Holding the top of the stat board after the first five games for Strasburg are Phebe Johnson (So) who has 4 home runs, 7 hits, and 14 RBI, Madi Olsen (So) who has 1 home run, 7 hits, and 5 RBI, Jordan Finley (Fr) who has 2 stolen bases and 8 runs, Addi Kent (So) who has 1 stolen base and 9 runs, Kailey Rushman (Sr) who has 1 stolen base and a 3.36 ERA, Anna Vetter (Sr) who has a 0.70 ERA, Rachel Rupple (Jr) who has 6 runs, Savanah Bradley (Jr) who has 7 hots and Averie Eymann (Sr) who has 5 RBI.

3. The Academy (6-1)

The Academy begins their season with a strong start of 6-1. Their first game was against Boulder where The Academy was able to get the win 20-4. They then faced Green Mountain, but fell to them by a single run, losing 4-5. But the Wildcats came back strong and beat their next five opponents, Denver North 9-4, Wray/Yuma 12-0, Platte Valley 19-0, Alamosa 2-1 and Greeley Central 19-0. The team will be looking to get more wins and continue their win streak against Wellington when they face-off on 8/29 at Wellington.

Leading the stat board for the wildcats to kick-off the season are Mackenzie Pearson (Sr) who has 1 home run, 12 runs, 11 hits and 11 RBI, Victoria Pearson (Sr) who has 5 stolen bases, a 2.74 ERA, 12 runs, and 11 hits, Keara Pogue (So) who has 3 stolen bases, 9 hits and 10 RBI, Harper Scott (Fr) who has 2 stolen bases, Leyla Martin (So) who has a 1,97 ERA, and Ava Fladung (Sr) who has 11 runs and 9 RBI.

4. Lamar (4-1)

The Thunder roll into the start of the season with a 4-1 start beating Guymon 11-8, Weld Central 17-0, University 4-3, and Fort Lupton 12-3. The defending State title winners for the win against Lamar 12-2, but they will be looking to keep that as the only loss on their record. This week they will face Wray/Yuma and Burlington on 8/31 in double header at 11:00am and 1:00pm.

Leading Lamar so far this season is Chloe Weber (Sr) who has 2 home runs, a 8.75 ERA, and 7 RBI, Melanie Salcedo (Sr) who has 1 home run, 9 hits and 7 RBI, Daisy Medina (So) who has 1 home run and 6 RBI, Alexus Campbell (So) who has 4 stolen bases, Annabelle Morales (Sr) who has 3 stolen bases, 9 runs and 10 hits, Khloe Fernandez (Jr) who has 3 stolen bases and 7 runs, and Carlin Weber (Fr) who has a 1.43 ERA and 8 hits.

5. University (2-4)

University starts their season with some good wins and tough losses. The Bulldogs lost their first game against Berthoud 10-2 but came back and beat Peak to Peak 13-3 and Rocky Ford 8-0. University also lost to Lamar 3-4, La Junta 5-6, and most recently Roosevelt in a close game of 8-7. The Bulldogs will be looking to add more wins this week as they will face Northridge on 8/29, Limon on 8/31 and Sterling on 9/3.

Stat leaders so far this season for the Bulldogs are Natalie Galindo (Jr) who has 1 home run, 5 hits and 8 RBI, Sydney Goetzel (Jr) who has 1 home run and a 3.65 ERA, Jasi Cole (Jr) who has 1 home run and a 5.56 ERA,  Kamzee Kern (Fr) who has 4 stolen bases and 5 RBI, Ella Galindo (Fr) who has 3 stolen bases, and 6 runs, Emma Zacheis (So) who has 2 stolen bases, 5 runs, and 7 hits, Jocelyn Chacon (So) with a 4.00 ERA, Danica Cooper (Sr) who has 4 runs, and Ellie Baca (Sr) who has 11 hits and 3 RBI.

6. Rocky Ford (3-2)

Rocky Ford begins their season with a 3-2 overall record. Their two first games were wins against Lyons (7-2) and Limon (15-0). The Meloneers then fell to two tough teams in University (8-0) and Eaton (13-1). The team was able to bounce back and secure a win their last game against Fort Lupton 11-3.  They will be looking to keep winning when they face Gunnison on 8/31, Strasburg on 8/31 and Widefield on 9/3.

Leading the team so far this season are Brilye Lovato (So) who has 3 stolen bases and 4 runs, Anneysiah Camcho (So) who has 2 stolen bases, 3 runs, 5 hits, and 4 RBI, Ashlynn Berg (Sr) who has 2 stolen bases, 3 hits and 1 RBI, Leticia Garcia (Sr) who has a 0.93 ERA and 4 runs, Alysia Marquez (Fr) who has a 12.60 ERA and 3 RBI, and Tay’Lor Archuleta (So) who has 3 hits.

7. Sterling (3-3)

The Tigers had a rocky start to their season, losing their first to games to Severance 19-0 and 20-1 in a double header. They were able to bounce back and have won their last three games since. These games were against Fountain-Fort Carson (16-4), Mountain View (16-14) and Poudre (11-1).  In their most recent game against Scottsbluff, Sterling lost 12-0. Sterling will be looking to add to the win column this week as they face Holyoke on 8/29 and University on 9/3.

8. Alamosa (4-2)

The Mean Moose are off to a strong start to the season. They are currently 4-1, with their wins all coming in the first 4 games of their season. Alamosa was able to beat Durango 17-11, Greeley Central 18-3, Wray/Yuma 18-1, and Platte Valley 18-1. Their first loss came from a close game against The Academy where they fell 2-1 and then the lost to Pueblo Centennial 9-7. The Moose will be looking to get back on the winning track and continue their success as they will face Sierra on 8/29 and Montezuma-Coretz on 9/3.

Stat leaders for Alamosa are Myissa Duran (Sr) who has 1 home run, 5 stolen bases, 10 runs, and 7 RBI, Araceli Molina (Jr) who has 4 stolen bases, 11 runs, 7 hits and 8 RBI, Leah Higareda (So) who has 2 stolen bases, Shaya Martin(So) who has 2 stolen bases, Olivia Castillo (So) who has a 1.97 ERA, Shea Jordan (Sr) who has a 5.57 ERA, Lexany Heredia (Sr) who has 10 runs,7 hits and 6 RBI, Gaby Castillo (Sr) who has 8 hits, and Hailie Dupont who has 7 hit and 6 RBI.

9. Southeast Colorado (2-1)

Southeast Colorado kicked off their season with a strong start. Their first game of the season was against Sierra where they won 18-0. In the home opener for the Angels, they faced Dolores Huerta Prep where they also won that game 15-0. Their most recent game was against Guymon where they got their first loss 6-2. Their next game will not be until 9/6 where they will be facing a tough opponent in Eaton, but they will be looking to battle and find wins, if not against Eaton, then when they face University and Strasburg on 9/7.

10. Meeker (2-3)

The Cowboys started their season with challenging opponents. Their first game was a loss against Rifle which resulted in the first loss for Meeker 19-16. The next two games for Meeker also ended in losses for the team, being 12-0 against Strasburg and 23-4 against Eaton. The team found their first win of the season against La Junta 11-8 and they won their most recent game against Weld Central 20-3. The team will be looking to get more wins in the next four games they will play against Delta on 8/30 in a double header, and Montezuma-Cortez on 8/31 in an additional double header.

Leading the Cowboys in stats currently are Ashlynn Ducey (Sr) with 1 home run, 1 stolen base, and 6 RBI, Emma Bauer (Jr) who has 3 stolen bases and 7 hits, Miah Wren (Sr) who has 1 stolen base, 8 runs, and 10 hits, Addie Knowles (Jr) who has an 8.83 ERA and 8 RBI, Miley Chism (Sr) who has 9 runs and 8 hits, and Kayla Castillo (So) who has 5 RBI.

11. La Junta (3-2)

The Tigers kicked off their 2024 season at home against Peak to Peak and Weld Central. Their first game was a loss to Peak to Peak 9-7 but La Junta was able to get a win against Weld Central 9-6. The teams first road game resulted in a loss to Meeker 11-8, but they were able to come home and win their next two games against University (6-5) and Limon (13-1). The Tigers will be trying to add more wins to their record this week as they will face Burlington on 8/29, and Pueblo Centennial on 8/31.

12. Resurrection Christian (5-0)

The Cougars are starting off their season so far with a perfect record. Their first game was against Thronton on the road where they were able to win 19-8. Resurrection Christian’s second game gave the first challenge of the season but they were able to squeak out the win in 9 innings 9-7. The team was able to then beat Mountain View 12-0 and Middle Park in a double header both 16-0. The Cougars will be looking to maintain their perfect record next week as they face Lyons on 9/3 at home.

Leading the stats so far this season for Resurrection Christian is Karisa Lippincott (Sr) who has 2 home runs, a 1.43 ERA, 11 runs, 14 hits and 13 RBI, Olivia Martinez (Jr) who has 1 home run, 7 stolen bases, and 9 RBI, Taylor Francis (Fr) who has 6 stolen bases, 10 runs, and 9 hits, Mia Lee (Fr) who has 5 stolen bases and 6 RBI, Savannah Johnson )So) who has a 1.68 ERA and 10 runs, and Bentley Steyaert (Sr) who has 8 hits.

13. Peak to Peak (3-2)

Peak to Peak starts off their season with some mixed success so far. Their first game of the season was a home opener against Valley where the Pumas won 13-11. They then fell to University 13-3 in the next game and followed up with a win against La Junta 9-7. This was followed up with another loss to Strasburg 9-8 and a win against Limon 17-7. Peak to Peak will be looking to break the alternating win/loss cycle and get more wins added to their record against Westminster on 8/29 and Centaurus on 8/31.

Leading the Pumas in stats for the beginning of the season are Maggie Wallis (Sr) who has 4 home runs, 8 runs, 9 hits, and 10 RBI, Grace Trasky (Fr) who has 6 stolen bases, 8 hits, and 7 RBI, Sydney Cusack (Sr) who has 3 stolen bases, a 5.76 ERA and 8 runs, Dagny West (Sr) who has 3 stolen bases, Karina Lefort (Jr) who has a 10.14 ERA, Evelyn Deemurrie (Jr) who has 6 runs, and Haley Haskin (Jr) who has 5 RBI. 

14. Delta (2-3)

Delta had their first game against Palisade on the road which resulted in a tough first loss Panthers 17-4. Delta was then able to bounce back and get a win against Fort Lupton 14-9. The last three games for the Panthers have had mixed results for the team, with losses to Strasburg (15-1) and Eaton (13-1), and a win against Weld Central in a close game (21-20). The team will fight to get another win this week in their home opener against Montezuma-Cortez on 8/29, and against Meeker in a double header on 8/30.

Stat leaders for Delta are Jazlyn Naranjo (So) who has 4 stolen bases, Olivia Hines (Jr) who has 3 stolen bases, 9 runs, 10 hits and 6 RBI, Velma Baily (Sr) who has 2 stolen bases, 9 hits, 7 runs, and 5 RBI, and Mya Abeyta (Sr) who has 7 runs, 9 hits, and 8 RBI.

15. The Classical Academy (2-1)

TCA is starting strong in the beginning of their season. They kicked off their season with a win in extra innings on the road against Canon City 13-6 and against James Irwin 17-0. The Titans lost their home opener to Pueblo Central 15-0 but will be looking to bounce back and get another win this weekend when they face Cheyenne Mountain on 8/30 on the road.

Stat Leaders for TCA are Veronica Santos (Sr) who has 1 home run, 6 runs, 6 hits, and 7 RBI, Taytum Kimbro (Fr) who has 2 stolen bases. 5 hits, and 4 RBI, Ada Wilson (So) who has 2 stolen bases, a 1.27 ERA, and 4 runs, Ashleigh Smith (Sr) who has 4 runs, and Adelynn Miller (Sr) who has 4 hits and 4 RBI.

16. Jefferson Academy (2-1)

The Jaguars started off their season with two wins in a double header against Englewood, beating them 18-7 and 20-10. Their most recent game unfortunately resulted in a loss for Jefferson Academy against Kennedy, 23-2. The Jaguars will be looking to get another win on the record this week when they face Aurora Central on 8/29 on the road.

Leading Jefferson Academy so far this season are Kristen Kientz (Sr) who has 4 stolen bases and 6 runs, Kayley Smith (Sr) who has 3 stolen bases, 5 runs, 7 hits, and 4 RBI, Isabella Ayala (So) who has 2 stolen bases, Ellie Arnold (So) who has 6 hits, 5 runs, and 8 RBI, Hannah Stumpher (Jr) who has 7 hits, and Madeline Scoffins (Sr) who has 4 RBI.
