SIX-MAN FOOTBALL PREVIEW – WEEK TWO

Cheyenne Wells made waves by beating Stratton 53-40 last Friday, handing their first loss since the 2021 state championship game, a streak of 27 consecutive wins. The last team to beat the Eagles prior to that defeat? Cheyenne Wells. The two teams flipped spots in the MileHigh Prep Report Media/Coaches poll this week. The week two schedule is highlighted by another top-10 clash, with #6 Granada visiting #7 Branson/Kim on Saturday.

THURSDAY

#2 STRATTON EAGLES (0-1) VS GENOA-HUGO PIRATES (0-1) 7PM

Last weekVon Isenbart threw four touchdowns, two apiece to Brody Webb and Gavin Ruhs, and Stockton Fye ran for just short of 150 yards with a 63-yard touchdown run in Stratton’s 53-40 loss at Cheyenne Wells. Fye also had a kick return for a TD. Freshman Ryker Lockhart threw for 107 yards and a TD, which Teghan Seymour hauled in, for Genoa-Hugo’s lone score in a 32-8 loss to Briggsdale.

Series history…Stratton leads 9-0 since 2004, including a 56-13 decision last year.

#5 ARICKAREE/WOODLIN BISON (1-0) AT PRAIRIE MUSTANGS (0-1) 7PM

Last weekAustin Wright tossed scoring passes to Dillon Noletubby, Zarron Skubal, and Jorge Ramos in Arickaree/Woodlin’s 35-13 win at Eads. Ramos (15), Skubal (14), and Wright (13) all had double digit tackles, with Wright and Skubal both picking up two sacks, and Ramos intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble. The Bison were flagged 17 times for 154 yards. Derek Dollerschell connected with Riar Holloway on a 12-yard TD pass to account for Prairie’s only score in a 52-8 loss at Idalia. Lane Schock had a team-high 14 tackles.

Series history…Arickaree/Woodlin won two of three meetings between 2017 and 2020. Prairie won three of four against Arickaree, the most recent coming in 2012. The Mustangs were 1-1 against Woodlin, with the last meeting between those two happening in 2011.

FRIDAY

#3 IDALIA WOLVES (1-0) AT HANOVER HORNETS (1-0) 2PM

Last weekBroderick Kite completed seven of nine passes for 120 yards and two scores in his high school debut for the Wolves. Gabe Kechter caught one of those TD passes and also ran for 151 yards and 3 TD, and also registered 14 tackles. Garret Drullinger added 128 yards and two scores on the ground in the 52-8 win over Prairie. Hanover ran for 304 yards and 8 TD in a 62-7 victory over Flagler. David Byers led the way with 127 yards and three touchdowns, while Thomas Griffin and LeeXander Thibou had two rushing scores apiece.

Series history… Idalia leads 1-0, winning 36-30 in 2015.

#4 OTIS BULLDOGS (1-0) VS HI-PLAINS PATRIOTS  (0-1) 7:30PM

Last weekMitchell Stivers and Tayte Smith both had two rushing touchdowns as Otis raced to a 58-6 win at Deer Trail. Austin Hornung threw touchdowns to Charlie Kendrick and Tayshaun Thomas for the Bulldogs, who led 48-0 after one quarter. Hi-Plains turned the ball over five times, four on fumbles, and allowed more than 260 rushing yards in a 51-8 against Weldon Valley.

Series history… Hi-Plains leads 9-3 since 2004, including a 1-1 mark while in the co-op with Flagler. Otis has won the last two meetings by a combined score of 133-13.

#8 EADS EAGLES (0-1) VS MIAMI-YODER BUFFALOES (1-0) 7PM

Last week… With three players already sidelined by injury, Eads lost Stockton Mitchek to a collarbone injury in the 35-13 loss to Arickaree/Woodlin. Prior to going out in the second quarter, Mitchek had a TD reception from Adyn Hough, who also threw one to Case Nelson. Gavin Howard led Miami-Yoder to a 40-32 win over 6-man newcomer Wiley, with 252 yards and 4 TD on the ground, and another 98 yards and two scores passing. Both TD passes went to freshman Robert Book. Isaac Labrecque topped the defense with 17 tackles.

Series history… Eads leads 4-0, with three coming by forfeit. That includes each of the last two years.

#9 PRIMERO BULLDOGS (1-0) VS MANZANOLA BOBCATS (1-0) 7PM

Last weekBrett Kendall had himself a game against Walsh, running for 271 yards and four scores, passing for 166 yards and four more, and even adding a reception for 25 yards in the 73-31 win. Gabe Sintas caught five passes for 128 yards and 5 TD, while Jairo Vicente Dominguez led the defense with 15 tackles and two interceptions. Six different Bobcats reached paydirt in Manzanola’s 61-19 win over Antonito. Hunter Merwin, Thomas Vigil, and David Pettes each had a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Jesse James added a scoop-and-score to a rushing TD.

Series history… Manzanola leads 5-0, this is the first meeting since 2019.

WELDON VALLEY WARRIORS (1-0) AT BRIGGSDALE FALCONS (1-0) 7PM

Last weekAugust Filter spearheaded the Weldon Valley attack at Hi-Plains, running for 160 yards and three TD, and also adding a passing score. Seth O’Patik ran for one and caught another, and also came away with an interception on defense in the 51-8 win. Scot Francis tossed a pair of touchdowns, one to Daniel Trujillo and the other to Kaeden Gebauer, and also tacked on a pick-six as Briggsdale beat Genoa-Hugo 32-8. Gebauer scored twice on the ground.

Series history… Briggsdale leads 12-6 since 2004, including six straight wins. The Falcons got a 51-6 victory last year. The winner grabs a share of the North division lead.

SATURDAY

#1 CHEYENNE WELLS TIGERS (1-0) AT WILEY PANTHERS (0-1) 7PM

Last weekTrey Scheler led the Tigers to the 53-40 win over Stratton by rushing for 168 yards and three scores, catching three passes for 100 yards and two TD, racking up 17 tackles, and picking off a pass. Ethan Garay added 131 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Zach Dickey threw for two scores and ran for another. Down 12-0 early in the second, the Tigers scored touchdowns on six straight possessions and seven of eight to seize control. In their first six-man game, the Panthers allowed almost 400 yards of offense to Miami-Yoder but still only lost 40-32.

Series history… Cheyenne Wells leads 5-1, but this is the first meeting in six-man. The last game between the two sides was back in 2013.

#6 GRANADA BOBCATS (1-0) AT #7 BRANSON/KIM BEARCATS (1-0) 11AM

Last weekMaddox Coleman had two pick-sixes, three sacks, and a fumble recovery as Granada raced to a 67-7 win over Cotopaxi. Sebastian Pizarro ran for 151 yards and three scores, while fellow freshman Alejandro Perez added two more touchdowns on the ground. Kolter Cranson did Kolter Cranson things in Branson/Kim’s 55-7 win over Kiowa, running for 218 yards and four scores, and catching three passes for 38 yards with another TD. Will Doherty added two rushing touchdowns, and the defense got picks from David Gamez and Acoya Bartlett.

Series history… Granada leads 4-0, winning 58-13 last year.

#10 SIERRA GRANDE PANTHERS (1-0) VS DEER TRAIL EAGLES (0-1) 4PM

Last weekAron Ojeda was on fire, completing 14 of 18 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns in Sierra Grande’s 46-34 win over Cheraw. Jadyn Martinez snagged 11 balls for 238 yards and three TD, and also led the defense with 14 tackles and two interceptions. One went back for a house call. Deer Trail could not get much going until the late stages of its 58-6 loss against Otis last week, as the Bulldogs got the mercy clock started before the end of the first quarter.

Series history… First meeting in the MaxPreps era (2004-current).

PEETZ BULLDOGS (0-1) AT CALICHE BUFFALOES (1-0) 7:30PM

Last week… Peetz rolled up more than 700 yards of offense in a 62-43 loss to Potter-Dix (NE). Logan Vallier completed 20 of 25 passes for 190 yards and a TD; Collin Schumacher threw for 123, ran for 111 and 4 TD, and caught 11 passes for 92 yards and a touch; and Dylan Wagner ran for 160 yards, threw for 94 and a score, and caught 17 passes for 144 yards. Caliche got its first six-man win by holding North Park to under 200 yards of offense. The Buffs won 36-6 and grabbed the early lead in the North division.

Series history… First meeting between the programs, winner shares the lead in the North.
