
Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Recap and Preview

The volleyball season is just starting to get rolling, so this week we will look at our top ranked teams and discuss how they are doing to kick off the season, who they will be expected to face this week and who the top players are for each team.

1. Sedgwick County (4-0)
Sedgwick County is currently 4-0, after beating Briggsdale 3-0, Haxtun 3-0, Weldon Valley 3-0 and Fleming in a close game of 3-2. The Cougars have not played any league games but will be looking to maintain their perfect record when the face South Platte on 9/10. League games for Sedgwick County will not begin until the end of September when they will play Wiggins on 9/26.
Leading the Cougars so far this season are Abigail Dille (Sr) who has 8 total blocks, 35 digs, 21 kills and 37 receptions, Piper Buettenback (So) who has 3 total blocks and 22 assists, Keyana Ehnes who has 2 total blocks, 28 kills, 52 receptions, and 9 serving aces, Ryen Carlson (So) who has 8 serving aces, 29 digs, and 52 assists, and Lainee Nein (Jr) who has 4 serving aces, 32 digs, 22 assists, 37 kills and 32 receptions.
2. Simla (5-0)
Simla is starting off their season very strong and are so far undefeated with a 5-0 record. Simla has so far been able to defeat Liberty Common, Weldon Valley, Wiggins, Byers, and Limon all without losing a set. The next few games for the Cubs will be against Thomas MacLaren School on 9/5, and Merino on 9/7. Simla will have to battle this week in order to maintain their perfect record.
3. Wiggins (3-2)
Wiggins sits currently with a 3-2 record so far this season. The Tigers were able to win their first two games against Valley and McClave but lost to Simla. They were able to turn it around and beat Byers but lost their most recent game against Platte Valley 3-0. Wiggins will have be facing Fleming on 9/5 were the Tigers will be looking to add that to the win column of their record and then they will face Weldon Valley on 9/10.
4. Colorado Springs Christian (2-0)
Colorado Springs Christian has only played two games so far this season but are off to a great start going 2-0 against Discovery Canyon and Eagle Ridge Academy. Both of these games were won by the Lions, 3-1. They will be looking to continue their winning streak this week as they face Liberty on 9/5 and Resurrection Christian on 9/7, both on the road.
Early season stat leaders for Colorado Springs Christian are Abi Howard (Sr) who has 6 total blocks, 3 assists, 19 kills and 16 receptions, Rachel Nash (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, Mattea Homan (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, Abigail Perry (Sr) who has 9 serving aces, 20 digs, 38 assists, and 16 kills, Jordyn Rollins (Jr) who has 7 serving aces, 32 digs, 10 assists, and 60 receptions, Madelyn Pauls (Sr) who has 17 digs, and Rose Ross who has 16 kills and 15 receptions.
5. Meeker (2-2)
Meeker currently has a record of 2-2 with alternating success. The Cowboys were able to win their first game against Roaring Fork, lost their next game against Glenwood Springs, beat Pagosa, but again lost to Steamboat Springs. Meeker will be looking to get a win this week against De Beque on 9/6 in their first league game of the season, but will also be looking to break the pattern and get a win against Vail Christian on 9/13.
The top Cowboys so far this season are Reese Clatterbaugh (Sr) who has 9 total blocks, 6 serving aces, and 14 kills, Adison Selle (Sr) who has 1 total block and 11 kills, Rylee Sullivan who has 7 serving aces, 31 digs, 25 kills, and 42 receptions, Sydnie Ross (Sr) who has 4 serving aces, Taylor Garcia (Sr) who has 70 digs, 1 assist and 68 receptions, and Jacey Follman (Jr) who has 26 assists.
6. Fowler (2-1)
Fowler was able to come back from their loss against the Van Guard School and beat Manitou Springs 3-0. This leaves Fowler with a 2-1 overall record to start the season and a 1-0 league record so far. This also puts the Grizzlies in 4th place in the Santa Fe League. The Grizzlies will be looking to add some wins to their records this week and will be facing Rocky Ford on 9/5 and James Irwin on 9/10.
7. Swink (1-2)
Swink currently has a reported 1-2 overall record and a 1-1 league record which puts them in 6th in the Santa Fe League. The Lions lost their first game of the season against Fowler but was able to get the win over Las Animas. Swink fell again and lost to McClave. This week the Lions faced Crowley County but the score was not reported as of article writing time. Swink will have a couple of chances to add wins to their record this week as they will be facing Swallows Charter Academy on 9/5 and Hoehne on 9/10.
Leading the stat board so far for Swink are Taylor Mendenhall (Jr) who has 4 total blocks and 11 kills, Daisy Heberlie (So) who has 2 total blocks, Kashlynn Blasingame (So ) who has 2 total blocks, 13 digs, and 13 assists, Briana McElroy (Jr) who has 2 serving aces and 20 assists, Madelyn Bamber (Jr) who has 2 serving aces, Larriana Taggert (So) who has 16 digs, 2 assists and 6 receptions, and Emma Gacnik with 12 digs and 5 receptions.

8. Burlington (2-0)
Burlington has only played two games this season, but so far are holding their perfect record. They have faced both Kit Carson and Hi-Plains and won both of those games 3-0. The Cougars will be playing a tournament this weekend will be facing Arickaree, Wray, and Arickaree/Woodlin on 9/7 and then they will be facing Bethune on 9/10. Burlington will have to keep up with teams that have more than two games under their belt but will be fighting to maintain their perfect record.
Stat leaders for Burlington are Emma McNerney (Fr) who has 5 total blocks, Isabella Hornung (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, Madelyn Erker (Sr) who has 3 total blocks and 3 assists, Karina Estrada (Sr) who has 8 serving aces, 29 digs, and 38 receptions, Kiyarra Williams (Sr) who has 6 serving aces, 20 digs, 18 kills and 35 receptions, Lynzee Neal (Jr) who has 5 serving aces, 13 digs, 20 assists, and 21 kills, Rayvonn Holmes (Jr) who has 19 assists, and Briar Simpson who has 20 receptions.
9. Rye (3-0)
Rye has only played three games so far this season, but have won each game, leaving them with a 3-0 overall record and a 1-0 league record. Their first game was against St. Mary’s where Rye won 3-2, their next game was against Woodland Park where Rye also won 3-1, and they won their most recent game against Las Animas 3-0. The Thunderbolts will be looking to maintain their success this week as they face Pueblo Central on 9/5, Lamar on 9/7 and Crowley County on 9/10/
Stat leaders for the team so far this season are Isabella Bond (Jr) who has 9 total blocks, 5 serving aces, and 20 kills, Kelsy Stribling (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, 50 digs, 46 assists, and 31 kills, Hayley Newitt (Jr) who has 2 total blocks, Desiree Ruiz (Sr) who has 11 serving aces, 75 digs, 12 assists and 89 receptions, Olivia Donlon (Jr) who has 7 serving aces and 27 assists, Taylor Pye (Jr) who has 38 digs, 21 kills and 41 receptions, and Seine Roy (Jr) who has 24 receptions.
10. Calhan (2-1)
Calhan has played four games so far this season, however only three have reported scores. In these games, the Bulldogs have managed to win two games, only against Kiowa and the other against Monument Academy. The lone recorded loss so far is against Banning Lewis Academy. Calhan will be looking to add more wins to their record this week and they will be playing against Evangel Christian Academy on 9/5, Peyton on 9/7 and Elbert on 9/10.
11. Yuma (3-1)
Yuma received their first loss of the season this week against Sidney, 3-1. This leaves Yuma with a 3-1 overall record so far this season. Yumas win this season so far are against Wiley, Akron and Kit Carson. The Outlaws will be looking continue their success this week and will be trying to beat Pine Bluffs on 9/6 and Chase County on 9/10.
Leading the team so far this season for Yuma are Aline Moran (Sr) who has 4 total blocks, 19 kills and 26 receptions, Lauren Gonzales (Jr) who has 1 total block, 3 serving aces, and 7 kills, Jade Lungwitz (Sr) who has 1 total block, Berkley Nighswonger (So) who has 8 serving aces, 15 digs, 3 assists, and 12 receptions, Aubrey Black (So) who has 5 serving aces, 16 digs, and 39 assists, Lauren Gonzales (Jr) who has 3 serving aces and 7 kills, and Taryn Sheffield (So) who has 26 digs, 4 assists, 9 kills, and 16 receptions.
12. Rangely (5-0)
The Panthers are off to a solid start of 5-0 to kick off their season. Their wins so far have been against Hayden, De Beque, Grand Valley twice, and Dove Creek. All of the first games were in tournament play, with the second game against Grand Valley being regular play. Rangely will be looking to keep their perfect record going this week and will be facing Caprock Academy, North Fork, and Moffat County.
13. Del Norte (6-0)
Del Norte starts off their season with a 6-0 win streak. So far they have faced La Veta (3-0), Rocky Ford (3-0), Ignacio (3-2), Norwood (2-1), Salida (2-1), and Dolores (2-1). In their first game of September, the Tigers will face off against Custer County on the road on 9/6 where they will be looking to add a win to their record.
Leading the Tigers so far this season are Hadley Legget (Sr) who has 5 total blocks and 9 kills, Baulie Laymon (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, Autumn Gallegos (Jr) who has 1 total block, Brynley Brown (Fr) who has 19 digs and 9 kills, Emma Parra (So) who has 15 digs, and Reese Brown who has 11 digs and 18 kills.
14. Gilpin County (2-2)
Gilpin County was able to win their first two games against Lake County and South Park but lost their next two games against Cedaredge and Sanford. This leaves the Eagles with a 2-2 record so far for the season. They will be looking to get more wins this week and will be playing against Byers on 9/10 and Lyons on 9/12 both at home.
Leading the team so far on the stat board are Jiselle Osteboe (Sr) who has 10 total blocks, 9 serving aces, and 41 kills, Annabelle Aloel (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, Elise Vincent (Jr) who has 3 total blocks, 34 assists, 41 kills, and 60 receptions, Lizzie Westbrook (Sr) who has 3 serving aces, 14 kills, and 46 receptions, Faith Ramsey (Sr) who has 3 serving aces, 39 digs, and 10 assists, Makenzie Marr (Sr) who has 64 digs and 88 receptions, and Joei Sutton (Sr) who has 32 digs, 60 assists.
15. Caprock Academy (6-0)
So far this season, Caprock Academy has faced Cotopaxi, Ridgeway, Crested Butte, Olathe, Plateau Valley and Soroco and have won every game to make their overall record 6-0 and their league record 2-0. This leaves the team holding 1st in the Western Slope League early on in the season. The only sets that Caprock has lost so far this season were one against Crested Butte and one against Soroco. The Eagles will be looking to keep this streak alive as they will be facing Rangely on 9/6 on the road.
Leading the Eagles so far this season are Brookelyn Savoya (Sr) who has 8 total blocks, 18 serving aces, 30 digs, 101 assists, and 27 kills, Maya Hoon (Sr) who has 4 total blocks, Taylor Waalkes (So) who has 3 total blocks, 32 digs, 38 kills, 57 receptions, Kailey Riskey (So) who has 17 serving aces and 11 assists, Taylor Phillips (Jr) who has 14 serving aces, Anna Caldwell (So) who has 28 digs, and 13 assists, and Zoey Polson (Jr) who has 33 kills.
16. Heritage Christian (4-1)
The Eagles currently have a record of 4-1. They lost their first game of the season against Peak to Peak (2-1) but they have been able to bounce back and have won their last 4 in a row against Front Range Baptist, in both tournament play and regular game play, (2-0 and 3-0), Highlands (2-0), and Frontier Academy (2-0). Heritage Chrisitan will be looking to continue their winning streak this week when they face Loveland Classical on 9/4, Liberty Common on 9/6 and Briggsdale on 9/10.
Leading the Eagles early this season are Kristin Osborne (Jr) who has 2 total blocks, 7 serving aces, 16 digs, 101 assists and 16 kills, Annabelle Loucks (So ) who has 1 total block, 10 serving aces, 8 assists, 37 kills and 24 receptions, Kayla Cuckler (Sr) who has 1 total block, 31 digs, and 34 kills, and Abby Leveillee (Jr) who has 10 serving aces, 33 digs, 6 assists, and 70 receptions.
