
Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Recap and Preview

This week, we revisit the top ten teams according to the CHSAA Seeding Index and discuss the outcomes of the previous week of play, see what is coming up, and look at the stat board for each team. We will also be looking at who is outside of the top 10 but are at the top of 2A teams in their respective leagues.

1. Sedgwick County (9-1)
Sedgwick County got their first lost of the season this week against Chase County. After two wins last week against South Platte and Burlington, the Cougars are currently 9-1 overall and are 1st in the CHSAA seeding index. The team has not played any league games yet and will not have their first league game until 9/26. This week, Sedgwick County will face Brush on 9/21 on the road. The Cougars will be looking to bounce back from their lone loss and get the win to maintain their ranking.
Leading the team in stats so far this season are Abigail Dille (Sr) who has 20 total blocks, 84 digs, 81 kills and 123 receptions, Keyana Ehnes who has 12 total blocks, 16 serving aces, 75 kills and 136 receptions, Lainee Nein (Jr) who has 7 total blocks, 9 serving aces, 123 digs, 101 assists, 105 kills and 79 digs, Ryen Carlson (So) who has 21 serving aces, 110 digs, and 165 assists, and Piper Buettenback (So) who has 28 assists.
2. Simla (8-0) Black Forest League
Just under halfway through the season, Simla remains undefeated so far with an 8-0 overall record, a 2-0 league record, and are currently 2nd in the CHSAA seeding index. In the last week, Simla got the wins over Dolores Huerta Prep and McClave both in 3 matches. This week, the Cubs will be looking to maintain their 1st place ranking in the Black Forest league when they travel to Fountain Valley on 9/10. The team will be looking to maintain their perfect record as well and will be back home on 9/21 against Wiggins to do that.
Helping the Cubs get to and maintain their perfect record so far this season are stat leaders Elle Leininger (Sr) who has 9 total blocks, Katie Gotschall (Jr) who has 9 total blocks, 12 serving aces, 3 assists, and 39 kills, Carlee Cox (So) who has 6 total blocks, 60 digs, 7 assists, 92 kills and 69 receptions, Kylie Maranville (Sr) who has 21 serving aces, 61 digs, 71 kills and 53 receptions, Meadow Nusbaum (Sr) who has 15 serving aces and 241 assists and Ava Leininger (Fr) who has 65 digs and 77 receptions.
3. Del Norte (9-0)
The Tigers are currently 3rd in the CHSAA seeding index with a 9-0 overall record. After getting the win earlier in the week against Pagosa Springs, Del Norte played their first league game last week against Sanford and got the win for a good league start of 1-0. This win currently has Del Norte in 2nd in the Southern Peaks League. The next game for the Tigers will be on 9/24 and will be against the Sargent Farmers on the road.
Sitting at the top of the leaderboard for Del Norte are Baylie Laymon (Sr) who has 33 total blocks and 10 serving aces, Hadley Legget (Sr) who has 20 total blocks and 55 kills, Brynley Brown (Fr) who has 6 total blocks, 13 serving aces, and 85 kills, Reese Brown (Sr) who has 17 serving aces, 99 digs, and 87 kills, Emma Parra (So) who has 121 digs and 20 assists and Kailee Gallegos (Sr) who has 130 assists.
4. Rangely (9-1) – Western Slope League
The Panthers got their first loss of the season last week after facing Caprock Academy. Fortunately for Rangely, they did were able to recover from the loss to get their second league win against Vail Mountain the following day. This gives Rangely a 9-1 overall record and a 2-0 league record. They are currently leading the Western Slope league and are ranked 4th in the CHSAA Seeing Index. This week, the Panthers will play Soroco on 9/20 at home in a league game and will travel to Meeker on 9/21 to play in another league game. The hope for the Panthers is that they keep winning and maintain both their league and seeding index standings.
Helping to lead the team in their success are stat leaders Lexi Lebleu (Sr) who has 12 total blocks, 15 serving aces, 95 kills and 61 receptions, Aubrianna Tapia (Jr) who has 10 total blocks, Addison Scott (Jr) who has 10 total blocks, Kaitlyn Cox (Sr) who has 26 serving aces, 72 digs, 118 assists, and 50 kills, Emma Winder (Sr) who has 22 serving aces, 88 digs, and 92 receptions, Emmeree Wagner (Sr) who has 74 digs, 22 assists, 39 kills and 113 receptions, and Karlee Halcomb (Sr) who has 102 assists.
5. Colorado Springs Christian (5-1) – Tri Peaks League
The Lions were able to recover from their loss at the end of the previous week and were able to get wins against Valley and Banning Lewis Academy. This leaves puts Colorado Springs Christian with a 5-1 overall record, a 1-0 league record, 2nd in the Tri-Peaks League and 5th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team will be looking to maintain both their league and seeding index rankings this week with two league games against Ellicott on 9/19 and Woodland Park on 9/24.
Success for the team is helped by the stat leaders, who for Colorado Springs Christian are Abi Howard (Sr) who has 11 total blocks, 14 serving aces, 56 digs, 8 assists, 50 kills and 55 receptions, Rachel Nash (Sr) who has 7 total blocks, Mattea Homan (Sr) who has 5 total blocks, Abigail Perry (Sr) who has 15 serving aces, 63 digs, 134 assists, and 46 kills, Jordan Rollins (Jr) who has 92 digs, 27 assists, 46 kills and 170 receptions, and Rose Ross (So) who has 37 receptions.
6. Burlington (6-1)
The Burlington Cougars are 6-1 after receiving their first loss of the season last week when they played Sedgwick County. The Cougars were able to beat Goodland, giving them a 1-1 record on games since our last update. Despite the loss, Burlington is still ranked 6th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. With no league games yet, Burlington is still at the bottom of the Union Pacific League but will be looking to quickly climb up the league rankings with two league games this week. The first will be on the road against Genoa-Hugo/Karval on 9/19 and then they will be back home to face Byers on 9/20.
Leading Burlington right now are stat leaders Emma McNerney (Fr) who has 12 total blocks, Kiyarra Williams (Sr) who has 12 total blocks, 14 serving aces, 61 digs, 65 kills and 118 receptions, Isabella Hornung (Sr) who has 11 total blocks, Lynzee Neal (Jr) who has 20 serving aces, 47 digs, 72 assists, and 78 kills, Rayvonn Holmes (Jr) who has 14 serving aces, 86 assists, Karina Estrada (Sr) who has 87 digs and 118 receptions, Madelyn Erker (Sr) who has 11 assists, Bethany Cure (Jr) who has 41 kills, and Briar Simpson (Jr) who has 58 receptions.
7. Wiggins (5-3) – Lower Platte League
Wiggins played a close game with Haxtun and was able to get the win 3-2. This win gave the Tigers a 5-3 overall record, a 1-0 league record start and they are currently 2nd in the Lower Platte league and 7th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Wiggins will have a tough opponent for their next game and will be on the road to face Simla on 9/21. The Tigers will then come back home and will face Akron in their second league game of the season where they will be looking to get wins in both games to work their way up the league rankings and Seeding Index.
Leading the team so far this season on the stat board are Brook Schmidt (Jr) who has 15 total blocks, 6 serving aces, and 28 kills, Tenleigh Lorenzini (So) who has 10 total blocks, Kennedy Kerr (Sr) who has 6 total blocks, 5 serving aces, 59 digs, 114 assists, and 36 kills, Jaydin Busch (Fr) who has 12 serving aces and 39 assists, Ali Beauprez (Jr) who has 97 digs, 10 assists and 88 receptions, Saria Hawkins (Jr) who has 50 digs and 53 receptions, Mackenzee Steinbar (Sr) who has 68 kills, and Karli Roberts (Sr) who has 54 receptions.
8. Lyons (5-1)- Mile High League
Lyons dropped their first set since they have been on their win streak but was able to still get the win over DCA, which gives the Lions a 5-1 overall record after also beating Gilpin County, a 2-0 league record, 1st in the Mile High League and 8th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Lyons will have two more league games in this update and will playing Front Range Christian on 9/19 at home and then next week they travel to Highland on 9/24. Wins in these games will keep Lyons in 1st place in the league and could help them move their way up the seeding index.
Top players for the Lions so far this season are Michaela Coleman (So) who has 19 total blocks, 18 serving aces, and 34 kills, Gen Newell (Sr) who has 8 total blocks, 37 digs, 6 assists, and 49 receptions, Scarlet Voss (Sr) who has 7 total blocks, 13 serving aces and 121 assists, Annabelle Hay (So) who has 13 serving aces and 37 kills, Sienna Reed (Sr) who has 64 digs and 51 receptions, Audrey Voss (So) who has 35 digs, 34 kills, and 49 receptions, and Carmen Dumbauld (Fr) who has 5 assists.
9. Swink (7-2)
Swink is currently on a 7-game win streak and in the last week was able to get three wins last week over Rye, Sanford and Walsenburg. Swink currently has a 7-2 overall record, a 6-1 league record, are 2nd in the Santa Fe League and are 9th in CHSAA Seeding Index. The Lions will be looking to work their way up the seeding index this week and will go on the road to face Granada on 9/19 and then will be back home to face Cheraw on 9/24.
Stat leaders for Swink ae Taylor Mendenhall (Jr) who has 46 total blocks and 76 kills, Daisy Heberlie (So) who has 41 total blocks and 62 kills, Kashlynn Blasingame (So) who has 14 total blocks, 13 serving aces, and 107 assists, Madelyn Bamber (Jr) who has 21 serving aces, Briana McElroy (Jr) who has 10 serving aces and 139 assists, Larriana Taggart (So) who has 117 digs, 3 assists, and 113 receptions, Emma Gacnik (So) who has 49 digs and 79 kills, Jaylee Nily (Jr) who has 47 digs and 70 receptions, and Jocelynn James (Jr) who has 53 receptions.
10. Haxtun (6-3)
Haxtun lost their 6 game win streak last week to Wiggins in a league game. This gives Haxtun a 6-3 overall record, a 2-1 league record, 3rd in the Lower Platte League, and they are currently ranked 10th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Bulldogs will be looking to get back on the right path and get some wins this week to boost their league rankings and seeding index. Their first game will be at home on 9/21 against Crowley County and then on 9/24, Haxtun will face Wray in a league game, which will also be at home.
Leading Haxtun on the stat board are Bobbi Starkebaum (Sr) who has 27 total blocks, 116 assists, and 82 kills, Jayleigh Bullard who has 14 total blocks, 19 serving aces, Josie Freeman (Jr) who has 10 total blocks, Lilly Lemesany (Jr) who has 25 serving aces, 120 digs, 18 assists, and 166 receptions, Kelsie Hadeen (Sr) who has 14 serving aces, 77 digs, and 150 assists, Maggie Kilgour (Sr) who has 99 digs, 69 kills and 139 receptions, and Emily Anderson (Sr) who has 113 receptions.
13. Denver Christian (6-3) – Metro League
Denver Christian was not able to get the win Colorado Academy this week which gave the Thunder their third loss of the season and their first loss in league play. The team now has a 6-3 overall record and a 0-1 league record. They are currently 4th in the Denver Metro League but are the top 2A team in that league. The Thunder are also ranked 13th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Thunder will be looking improve their league standings and rise in the seeding index this week as they will face SkyView Academy on 9/19 at home and then will be on the road for a league game against Eagle Ridge Academy on 9/24.
Stat leaders for Denver Christian are Addison Ruter who has 12 total blocks 16 aces, and 28 kills, Natalile Bohannon who has 11 total blocks and 29 kills, Klara Van Andel (Sr) who has 8 total blocks, Noelani Book (Sr) who has 24 serving aces, 143 assists, Bree Austin who has 17 serving aces and 50 digs, Erika Middel (Sr) who has 75 digs, 17 assists and 87 receptions, Ava Vande Griend (Sr) who has 64 digs, 6 assists, 81 kills, and 114 receptions, and Hadley Pellegrino who has 40 receptions.
17. Fowler (6-1) – Santa Fe League
The Grizzlies got their fifth win in a row this week after beating both Walsenburg and Swallows Charter Academy 3-0. Fowler currently has a 6-1 overall record, a 4-0 league record, are first in the Santa Fe league, and are sitting in a good sport at 17th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. With a couple of league games coming up, Fowler will be looking to get wins to maintain the league ranking. The Grizzles will be at home on 9/19 to face Hoehne and then will remain at home to face Rye on 9/24.
19. Mancos (9-3)- San Juan Basin League
The Bluejays have won their last six games in a row, including their most recent games against Dolores in a league game and Montezuma-Cortez. Mancos is currently 9-3 overall and 1st in the San Juan Basin League with a 4-0 league record, and the team is currently 19th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Bluejays will be looking to keep their league ranking as they will face Nucla on 9/21, and Dove Creek on 9/24 in league road games.
Leading the team on the stat board this far in the season are Destiny Kramer (Jr) who has 12 total blocks, Bailey Beh (So) who has 6 total blocks, 118 digs, 175 kills and 163 receptions, Tinsley Aspromonte (Fr) who has 5 total blocks and 25 kills, Brooke Jabour (Jr) who has 18 serving aces, 204 digs, 18 assists, and 191 receptions, Aubree Wyatt (So) who has 16 serving aces, 141 digs, 6 assists, 145 kills and 112 receptions, and Alexis Lyons (Jr) who has 323 assists.
31. Custer County (4-2) – West Central League
The Bobcats will have had two weeks off from play by the time they play their next game against South Park on 9/21. Custer County’s last two games were losses to Del Norte and ECA, who they will be looking to get their second league game against South Park, and a win for their overall record against Trinidad on 9/24. The Bobcats are currently 4-2 overall, 1-0 in league play, 1st in the West Central Legue and 31st in the CHSAA Seeding Index.
32. Limon (2-4) – Union Pacific League
With a 1-1 league record after Limon lost to Genoa-Hugo/Karval last week, Limon is currently 4th in the Union Pacific League, has a 2-4 overall record and are 32 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Badgers will be looking to improve their record this week and will play a league game against Flagler on 9/19 and Merino on 9/24 both at home.
Stat leaders for the Badgers are Kinslee Reystead (Sr) who has 2 total blocks, Enyceia Frescas (Sr) who has 1 total block and 22 kills, Maddy Witt (So) who has 1 total block and 5 serving aces, Macie Witt (Sr) who has 5 serving aces, 28 digs, 28 assists, and 11 kills, Chloe Stone (So) who has 4 serving aces, 36 digs, 14 assists and 34 receptions, Samara Humphrey (Sr) who has 37 digs and 66 receptions, Gianna Humphrey (Sr) who has 3 assists, and 10 kills, and Sydney Richardson (Jr) who has 33 receptions.
41. Buena Vista (3-5) – Southern Peaks League
Buena Vista got their 2nd league win last week over Center after they fell to Vail Christian a couple of days before. The Demons are currently 3-5 overall, 2-0 in league play and are 1st in the Southern Peaks league. BV will be looking to improve their record and move up from the 41st spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index this week when they face Rye and Peyton on 9/20.
Stat leaders for Buena Vista are Daisy Lubbers (Jr) who has 17 total blocks, 13 serving aces, 84 digs, 14 assists, 39 kills and 109 receptions, Bridgette Dawson (Sr) who has 12 total blocks, Sophie White (Sr) who has 10 total blocks, Mindy Griggs (Jr) who has 25 serving aces, Hannah Wingo (Jr) who has 14 serving aces, 100 digs, 46 kills and 137 receptions, Bailey Turner (Sr) who has 66 digs and 114 reception, Payton Crites (Sr) who has 68 assists, and Sydney Feuerstein (Sr) who has 49 kills.
56. Highland (3-7) – Patriot League
The Huskies are currently sitting in the 56th spot of the CHSAA Seeding Index after going 3-7 so far overall, 1-0 in league play and are the 1st 2A team in the Patriots league, sitting 5th overall. Highland lost both games last week, falling to WCA and brush. This week, Highlands will face Lyons on 9/24 at home where they will try to get a win to improve their record.
Leading the stat board for Highland are Kaiya Walkup (Sr) with 1 total block and 19 assists, Leah Varra (So) with 10 serving aces, 14 digs, and 15 assists, Nikki Quinones (So) who has 10 serving aces, 21 digs, 8 kills, and 37 receptions, Austyn Bingley (So) who has 5 serving aces, Annabelle Crider (So) who has 27 digs, 5 assists and 25 receptions, Kailey Lesquier (Sr) who has 18 kills, and Ryleigh Wares (So) who has 10 kills and 34 receptions.
58. Addenbrooke Classical Academy (3-7) – Foothills League
The Mustangs are currently 3-7 overall and 1-0 in league play. They are currently in 1st in the Foothills League, but are ranked 58th in the CHSAA Seeding index. Their third win of the season came last week against Poudre Community Academy, but they then fell to Ascent Classical Academy earlier this week. Next week, Addenbrooke Classical will be at home to host William Smith on 9/23 to see if they can add more wins to their record and maybe move up in the rankings.
Leaders on the stat board for the Mustangs are Maezy Black Hawk (Sr) who has 10 total blocks and 15 kills, Adorae Sulzle (So) who has 5 total blocks, Reena Lanzen (Jr) who has 2 total blocks, 22 serving aces, 27 digs, 66 assists, and 16 kills, Lucia Rodriguez (Jr) who has 12 serving aces, 42 digs, 25 assists, Jubilee Trueman (Jr) who has 9 serving aces, Claudia Hensley (Sr) who has 41 digs, 32 kills, and 92 receptions, Sophie Von Ree (Jr) who has 1 assists and 40 receptions, and Aspen Gardner (Sr) who has 44 receptions.
65. Platte Canyon (2-5) -Frontier League
The Huskies went 1-1 in game play last week, getting the win over Jefferson but falling to Arrupe Jesuit. This puts Platte Canyon 2-5 overall, 1-1 in league play, 6th in the Frontier league and 65th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Huskies will be looking to move their way up in the ranks this week and will be playing league games against Middle Park on 9/19, Lake County on 9/20, and The Pinnacle on 9/24.
Sitting at the top if the stat board for Platte Canyon are Jordan Poniatowski (Sr) who has 3 total blocks, 7 serving aces, 12 digs, 21 assists, and 22 kills, Sydni Shuss (Sr) who has 2 total blocks, Rya Todd (Fr) who has 1 total block, Hayden Lane (Sr) who has 17 serving aces, 15 digs, 16 kills, and 43 receptions, Abby Tomasko (So) who has 8 serving aces, 6 assists, and 13 kills, Meadow Newton (Jr) who has 17 digs and 54 receptions, Dakota Speelman (Fr) who has 1 assists, and Rachael Hayes (Fr) who has 14 receptions.
