Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Recap and Preview

This week we take a look at the top 2A teams in each of the 14 leagues. These are teams to keep an eye out for as we enter the last third of the regular season.

1. Simla – Black Forest

Sitting at the top of the CHSAA Seeding index and at the top of their league is Simla. With more than half of their season under their belt, the Cubs have managed to keep a perfect record so far, going 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the Black Forest Legue. Even more impressive is that the team had not lost a single set until they played Wiggins last week. The Cubs got the win in several close sets over Wiggins (3-1) but did lose their first set 27-25. Simla will host the rest of this week and will face La Veta and Hoehne on 9/28. Next week, the Cubs will travel to Peyton to kick off October, and then they will be back home to play Monument Academy on 10/4.

Leading the team and league in stats is Carlee Cox (So) with the second most kills in league with 92 kills, Kylie Maranville (Sr) ranks 3rd in kills with 71 and 3rd in serving aces with 21, Meadow Nasbaum (Sr) ranks 1st in league assists with 241, and Katie Gotschall (Jr) ranks 2nd in league blocks with 9.

3. Colorado Springs Christian – Tri-Peaks League

Colorado Springs Christian is currently 2nd in the Tri-Peaks league behind Lamar. The Lions are 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play. Their lone loss so far comes from their game against Resurrection Christian which occurred earlier this month, but the Lions have won their last three games which were against Valley (3-2), Banning Lewis Academy (3-0), and Woodland Park (3-0). Colorado Springs Christian is currently 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index and will be looking to stay towards the top. This week, the Lions will host St. Mary’s on 9/26. Next week, the team will be on road and will face James Irwin on 10/1, and Salida on 10/3.

4. Lyons – Mile High

Lyons is currently leading the Mile High League with a 7-1 overall record and a 4-0 league record. The lions are currently on a seven-game winning streak after beating Highland 3-0, with set scores of 25-18, 25-15, and 25-19. Currently, the Lions are sitting 4th in the CHSAA Seeding Index, and they will be looking to maintain their position as play continues to get closer to the playoffs. Lyons will be on the road today to face Flatirons Academy and then will be facing ECA, Cheraw, and Byers all on 9/28.

Leading the league in stats for Lyons are Michaela Coleman (So) who is 13th in serving aces with 28 and Scarlet Voss (Sr) who is 8th in assists with 213.

6 Swink – Santa Fe

The Swink Lions are having a strong season so far as they sit 6th in the CHSAA Seeding index and 1st in the Santa Fe League. The Lions are currently 9-2 overall and 6-1 in league play. Not only is Swink on an eight game win streak, but in the last eight games they have played, they have not lost a set. They most recent wins for Swink have been against Granada and Cheraw. Today will be another league game for Swink as they will travel to Rocky Ford to face the Meloneers, and then next week, they will travel to face Calhan. The Lions will be looking to maintain their win streak and stay at the top of their league and the seeding index.

League stat leaders for the Lions are Taylor Mendenhall (Jr) who is 1st in the league for kills with 104, and 1st for total blocks with 55, Emma Gacnik (So) who is 3rd in the league for kills with 94, Briana McElroy (Jr) who is ranked 1st in the league for assists with 181, Madelyn Bamber (Jr) who is 3rd in serving aces for the league with 23, and Daisy Heberlie (So) who is ranked 2nd in the league for total blocks with 52.

7. Wiggins – Lower Platte

With a 6-4 overall record and a 2-0 league record, Wiggins is currently sitting in 2nd place in the Lower Platte League behind Merino and the Tigers are ranked 7th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Wiggins went 1-1 in play last week, losing to Simla 3-1, but giving Simla their first set loss, and the Tigers beat Akron 3-0. Tonight will be a good match for Wiggins as they will be facing the number 2 ranked team in the seeding index, Sedgwick County, on the road. Next week, the team will host Limon on 10/3. Wiggins will be looking to continue their success and remain at the top of the Lower Platte League and within the top 10 of the seeding index.

Leading the league in stats for Wiggins is Brooke Schmidt (Jr) who has 26 total blocks and is ranked 2nd in the Lower Platte League for blocks, and Ali Beauprez (Jr) who is ranked 3rd on the league for digs with 139.

14 Denver Christian – Metro League

Early into league play, Denver Christian is 1-1 in league play and 7th in the Metro League. The Thunder are currently 14th in the CHSAA Seeding Index and have an 8-3 overall record. They were able to win their last two games over Skyview Academy (3-0) and Eagle Ridge Academy (3-0).This week, Denver Christian will be on road to face Jefferson Academy on 9/30. The team will be looking to win this league game to possibly move their way up in league rankings and maintain their position in the seeding index.

League stat leaders for Denver Christian are Ava Vande Griend (Sr) who is ranked 1st in the league for kills with 129, Noelani Book (Sr) who has 242 assists and is ranked 2nd in the Metro League for assists, and Erika Middel (Sr) who is ranked 3rd in the league for digs with 127.  

16 West Grand – Western Slope

Sitting 1st in the Western Slope League with a 2-0 league record, West Grand is 16th in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 9-3 overall record. The Mustangs are off to a good start after having a little more than a week off from play and have won their last two games which were against Vail Mountain (3-1) and North Park (3-0). West Grand will be looking to maintain their position in league this week and next week as they will be playing league games against Plateau Valley on 9/27, De Beque on 10/3, and then will travel to Rangely on 10/4 and Meeker on 10/5.

Karla Gozalez (Jr) is ranked 3rd in the Western Slope League for digs and has 180 digs.

19. Mancos – San Juan Basin

Sitting 2nd in league behind Dove Creek, the Mancos Bluejays are 5-1 in league play and have a 10-4 overall record, putting them 19th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Bluejays were on a seven game win streak, which included their game last weekend against Nucla, but unfortunately for Mancos, Dove Creek beat them 3-1 and not only broke their streak, but also took the number one spot in the San Juan Basin League. Mancos is still the top 2A team in the league and will be looking to keep it that way. The next few games for the Bluejays will be against Ouray on 9/27, Dolores on 10/3 and Telluride on 10/5.

Stat leaders in the league for the Bluejays are Bailey Beh (So) who is ranked 1st in the league for kills with 196, and is ranked 1st in the league for serving aces with 38, Aubree Wyatt (So) who is ranked 3rd in the league for kills with 158 and 2nd in the league for digs with 162, Alexis Lyons (Jr) who is ranked 1st in the league for assists with 356, and Brooke Jabour (Jr) who is ranked 1st in the league for digs with 235.

22. Lake County – Frontier League

With a win over Platte Canyon (3-0) last week, the Panthers are 1-0 in league play, 4th in the frontier league, 5-3 overall and 22nd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. With only 6 games left in the schedule for Lake County, and four of those games being league games, the team will be looking to get as many wins as possible to move their way up the league rankings and stay where they are or move up in the seeding index. The Panthers will be on the road tonight to face The Pinnacle, they will be hosting Arrupe Jesuit on 9/28 and then will travel to Fort Lupton on 10/3.

25 Ascent Classical Academy – Foothills

The Guardians are currently in 1st place in the Foothills league. They are 4-0 in league play, 8-4 overall and 25th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team is currently on a four game win streak after beating ACA (3-0), GVCA (3-0), Poudre Community Academy (3-0), and STEMSHR (3-1). The next few games for the Guardians will be against William Smith on 9//30, Loveland Classical on the road on 10/2, and then they will host Nederland on 10/4. Ascent Classical Academy will be looking to win these next three league games to maintain their position in league rankings and in the seeding index.

27. Limon – Union Pacific

Sitting 3rd in the Union Pacific League, Limon is 2-1 in league play, 3-5 overall and are 27th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Badgers got the win over Flagler 3-1 but fell to Merino 3-0. Limon will not be playing in any league games this next week, but will be trying to get wins to maintain or better their seeding index rankings. They will host Peyton on 9/27, then the Badgers will travel to Bennett on 10/1, Bennett on 10/1, and Wiggins won 10/3. Leading the team on the league stat board is Enyceia Frescas (Sr) who is ranked 3rd in the league for kills with 53.

33. Buena Vista – Southern Peaks

Sitting 1st in the Southern Peaks League, Buena Vista needs to maintain their league success in order to ensure they make it to post season play. The Demons are currently 33rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-0 league record. The team was able to get wins over Rye in a close game of 3-2, and Peyton 2-0, but will need to keep winning to not fall out of playoff contention. Tonight the Demons travel to Crested Butte in non-league play, will host Sanford on 9/28 in non-league play and then will host Custer County in a league match on 10/1.

Leading the team on the league stat leader board are Paton Crites (Sr) who has ranked 3rd in league for assists with 99, Mindy Griggs (Jr) who is ranked 1st in league for serving aces with 35, Daisy Lubbers (Jr) who is ranked 3rd in league for total blocks woth 24, and Hannah Wingo (Jr) who has 127 digs and is ranked 2nd in the league.

35. Custer County – West Central

Ranked 35th in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Custer County is considered a cusp team for making the playoffs currently, however being ranked 1st in the West Central league is good for the Bobcats. They are currently 2-0 in league play and are 6-2 overall after beating South Park and Trinidad, both 3-0. Custer County will be looking to maintain the league ranking and move up in the seeding index with wins as they will host Cotopaxi tonight in a league game, and then they will host Calhan on 9/28, then travel to Buena Vista on 10/1, and will host Crested Butte on 10/2.

77.Lotus School – Confluence

Lotus School For Excellence is the only team in the Confluence League. They are currently 1-10 overall, getting their first win over William Smith last week, and then falling to Hinkley 3-0. With only four games left on their schedule, the Meteors will be traveling to Cripple Creek-Victor tonight, host Atals Prep on 9/30, see SWCPA on 10/3 and then will travel to William Smith on 10/23 to wrap up the season.
