
Class 1A Football Preview-Week Five

We enter the Five week of the regular season and things have been exciting the first four weeks of the season. This week we quickly give the Top 10 Schedule then we give you the 6 games we are most excited for. We will give a quick breakdown of those games. This will be the final week before jumping into league races. Good Luck to all teams this weekend!

Class 1A Top 6 Games of the Week
#2 Limon (3-0) vs #5 Buena Vista (2-1), Saturday at 2pm
We kickoff the top games in Class 1A with our game of the week. Buena Vista makes the trip over to Limon for a top 5 battle to end the non-league schedule. Limon comes into the contest at 3-0 overall and they made quick work of Bennett last week winning 54 to 8. Limon jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead and never looked back. Defensively Limon held Bennett to 124 yards of total offense. Liam Yoder (6), Jacob Jaklich (5), and Keegan Mellott (4) lead the Badgers in tackles. Limon also forced 3 turnovers in the game. Offensively Limon racked up 429 yards of total offense. RB Skylur McCready had a breakout performance with 129 yards rushing and 4 rushing TDs. RB Jacob Kalich was #2 in rushing with 87 yards and a TD while QB Aidne Kollath threw for 59 yards and 1 TD. Buena Vista comes into the contest with a 2-1 record, and they are coming off a bye. Buena Vista last game was a 19 to 13 loss to Centauri on 9/13. In the game Buena Vista racked up 341 yards of total offense. RB Eli Schuknecht led all rushers with 106 yards and 1 TD. RB Tray Cardwell was #2 in rushing with 75 yards and a TD while QB Hudson Wingo threw for 64 yards. Defensively Buena Vista did struggle to slow down the Centauri offense giving up over 430 yards of offense in the game. Buena Vista did force a pair of turnovers in the game. Bryson Flavin (16), Knox Reid (14), and Carter Stromer (13) lead the Demons in tackles.
#4 Centauri (3-0) vs 2A Bayfield (3-0), Friday at 7pm
Our next matchup takes us into the San Luis Valley where a pair of undefeated teams will clash. Bayfield will make the trip over Wolf Creek pass to face off against #4 Centauri. Centauri comes in with a 3-0 record and they are coming off a bye. Centauri last game was a 19 to 13 win over Buena Vista. Defensively in the game Centauri slowed the Buena Vista offense down to 350 yards of offense while forcing 3 turnovers (a pair of fumble recoveries by Marcos Atencio) and 2 Sacks in the game. Parker Buhr (14) leads all tacklers from Centauri while Marcos Atencio (9) and Ryder Norton (9) were the second leading tacklers. Offensively Centauri racked up 438 yards of total offense. QB Sean Jarvies had a big day throwing for 174 yards and 2 TDs. RB Parker Buhr lead all rushers with 136 yards while WR Carson Shawcroft lead all pass catchers with 92 yards and 2 TDs. Bayfield comes into the matchup at 3-0 overall and they are coming off a hard fought 38 to 35 win over Ignacio last week. Offensively Bayfield had a big day racking up 382 yards of total offense. RB Lincoln Williams had a breakout day rushing for 139 yards and 2 TDs. QB Cole Mcwhirter also had a solid day passing for 89 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively Bayfield was able to hold onto the win. Bayfield in the game forced a pair of INTs and two sacks in the game. Logan Valencia (5), Estevan Gonzales (4), Payton Montgomery (4), and Austin Wilmer (4) lead Bayfield in tackles.
2A Gunnison (0-3) at North Fork (1-2), Friday at 7pm
We stay on the western slope for our next matchup. Our next matchup features an old league rivalry between 2A Gunnison and North Fork. North Fork is currently 1-2 on the season and coming off back-to-back losses. Last week North Fork fell in a hard-fought game 14 to 12 to 2A Banning Lewis. Defensively North Fork held Banning Lewis to 201 yards of total offense. North Fork forced a pair of INTs with Joe Hollembeak grabbing a pair of INTs and scoring a defensive TD. Skylar Anderson (10) and Bo Eves (9) lead the Miners in tackles. Offensively North Fork racked up 222 yards of total offense but struggled to into the endzone. RB Derick Sievertsen rushed for 133 yards and 1 TD. RB Mazzen Balko and Joe Hollembeak both ran for 35 yards as the #2 rushers. Gunnison comes into the matchup at 0-3 overall and are coming off a bye week. Gunnison has been hit by the injury bug and will be looking to right the ship before heading into league. Gunnison on the season has losses to Eagle Valley (32-0), Delta (51-12), and Meeker (25-12). Gunnison will be looking to click on all cylinders this week. Gunnison has no stats so far this year.
#3 Forge Christian (4-0) at 2A Manitou Springs (2-1), Friday at 7pm
We head back to the Front Range for our next matchup between 2A Manitou Springs and Forge Christian. Forge Christian comes into the matchup at 4-0 overall and they are coming off their most impressive win of the season. Forge Christian last week blasted 2A Kent Denver 50 to 6. Offensively Forge Christian had a huge day racking up 570 yards of total offense. QB Sullivan Strange continues to play really well and put his name in the POY conversation with 267 yards passing, 35 yards rushing, and 5 TDs. RB Euli Tafoya also had a solid game with 131 yards rushing while WR Joey Shelton had a big day with 140 yards receiving and 2 TDs. Defensively Forge Christian nearly had the shutout but had a pair of sacks by Dante Vigil also Vigil had 9 tackles in the game. Carson Craig was the #2 tackler with 6 tackles and 3 TFL. Manitou Springs comes into the contest at 2-1 overall and they picked up their first loss of the season falling to Valley last week 28 to 14. On the season Manitou Springs has been led by their rushing attack. RB Logan Moore leads the way with 320 yards and 5 TDs. QB Ben Perkins has led the passing attack with 231 yards and 3 TDs while WR Preston Rhodes leads all pass catchers with 153 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively Logan Moore is the leader with 8 Tackles and 4 INTs on the season. Layton Little (6) and Ashur Lavigne (5) are #2 and #3 in tackles for the Mustangs.
#8 Yuma (2-1) at 2A Brush (0-3), Friday at 7pm
We head out to the eastern plains for our next matchup. Yuma makes the trip down HWY 34 to face Brush in a key matchup. Yuma comes into the contest at 2-1 overall and they are coming off a hard-fought win over Torrington WY 8 to 3. Yuma played excellent defense in the contest giving up the FG early then pitching the shutout. Yuma was led on defense by Jonathan Thomson who had 9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, and 1 Fumble recovery. Adrian Carranza was #2 in tackles and Iann Duran had an INT plus two tackles. Offensively Yuma had just enough, scoring in the fourth quarter to get the win. Yuma was led by their rushing attack which had 163 yards. Jonathan Thomson had 122 yards rushing and 1 TD in the game while Daden Beauprez was the #2 rusher with 25 yards. The win for Yuma was big defeating the defending 3A WY state champions. Brush comes into the contest at 0-3 overall. Last week Brush fell to #1 Wray 28 to 0. This week is a big game for the Beet diggers before heading into league play next week. Brush on the season has been powered by their rushing attack. RB Jolani Thomas leads Brush while QB Eric Rico leads the passing attack. Defensively Brush is led by Percy Odle who has had over 9 tackles in their first two games. Konrad Castrup is #2 in tackles for Brush. This is a big game for Brush to get momentum heading into league play.
Denver Christian (1-3) at Burlington (1-2), Saturday at 1pm
We stay on the Eastern Plains for our final matchup. Denver Christian makes the trip down I70 to face off against Burlington. This is a key game for both teams as they try and get key momentum before kicking off league action next week. Burlington comes into the contest at 1-2 overall and they are coming off a hard-fought loss to Lamar 7 to 6. Burlington missed the PAT or two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to fall to Lamar. Offensively Burlington was powered by their rushing attack which racked up 176 yards in the game. RB Jason Saucedo lead all rushers with 107 yards while RB Anthony Estrada scored the lone TD plus had 54 yards. Defensively Burlington held Lamar to 218 yards of total offense. Stanton Cure (10 tackles, 1 TFL) lead the Cougars. Edward Marolf and Connor Halde were #2 in tackles with 5. Denver Christian comes into the contest at 1-3 overall and they are coming off a 46-0 loss to Highland. Denver Christian has now lost back-to-back games falling to Kent Denver two weeks ago 42-6 and last week to Highland. Denver Christian has not uploaded stats in their past two games.
