Class 3A Softball Weekly Recap and Preview

This week we take a look at the top 10 teams in the CHSAA Seeding index and the top 3A teams in each league. These are teams that could make it to the playoffs and to watch as we wrap up the last couple weeks of the season.

1. Eaton – Patriot League

Sitting first in the Patriot League and at the top of the CHSAA Seeding Index is Eaton. The Reds are currently 16-2 overall on the season, with their two losses being from Southeast Colorado (5-4) and Holy Family (4-2). Their wins from last week were over Valley (17-0), Brush (11-1), and Lyons (17-4). With only 5 games left in the regular season, Eaton will be looking to maintain their league and seeding index standings. They will be on the road for the next three games at Riverdale Ridge on 9/30, University on 10/3, and Platte Valley on 10/5. They will then be home to host Weld Central on 10/8, and Resurrection Christian on 10/10.

Leading the team and the league on the stat board are Johanna Galvan (So) who is ranked 1st in the league for RBI with 37, and ranked 1st in the league with a 1.27 ERA, Emma Anderson (So) who is ranked 3rd for RBI in the league with 30, and 1st in the league for runs with 31, Kiauna Smith (Sr) is ranked 3rd in the league for runs with 30, and Bria Foster (So) is ranked 3rd in the league for ERA with a 1.91.

2. Strasburg

The Indians are currently sitting in the number 2 spot of the CHSAA Seeding index and 3rd  in the Patriot League. Strasburg beat Forge Christian 7-0, Limon 15-2, and Valley (12-0) in the last week of play to give them a 15-4 overall record and a 4-1 league record. The team will be looking to keep their eight game win streak going in the four games remaining in the regular season. These games will be against Brush on 9/28, Lyons on 10/3, Platte Valley on 10/8 and University on 10/10. Leading the Patriot League from Strasburg is Phebe Johnson (So) who is ranked 1st in the league for home runs with 6.

3. University

University currently is 2nd in the Patriot League and 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 5-0 league record, and an 12-5 overall record. The Bulldogs are n a 6 game winning streak after last week when they were able to get wins over Lyons (7-0), Weld Central (17-2),The Academy (15-2) and Platte Valley (16-0). University has six games remaining on the schedule. In these games, the Bulldogs will be looking to collect as many wins as possible to maintain their league ranking and their spot in the seeding index. The next few games for University will be against Brush on the road on 10/1, Eaton on 10/3, Greeley West on 10/5, Resurrection Christian on the road on 10/8, Strasburg on 10/10 and on the road to Fort Lupton on 10/12.

Leading the league in stats from University are Sydney Goetzel (Jr) who has 6 home runs anda 1.82 ERA, and is ranked 2nd in the league for both stats, and Jasi Cole who is ranked 3rd in the league for home runs and has 5.

4. Lamar

The Thunder currently sit in 2nd  in the Tri Peaks I league. Last week, they were able to get wins over both Alamosa (10-3) and Rocky Ford (9-2) to make their league record 3-1, their overall record 13-5 and their CHSAA Seeding Index spot at 4th. Their lone league loss was against Southeast Colorado who is just behind the Thunder in the seeding index. To wrap up the regular season, Lamar will face La Junta on 10/1 on the road, Alamosa on 10/5 at home, Southeast Colorado on the road on 10/8, Rocky Ford on 10/10 and Brush on 10/12 both at home.

League stat leaders for the Thunder are Chloe Weber (Sr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for home runs with 2 and 1st in the league for RBI with 23, Khloe Fernandez (Jr) who is ranked 1sy in the league for runs with 28 and 3rd in the league for stolen bases with 14, and Carlin Weber (Fr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for ERA with a 2.65.

5. Southeast Colorado – Tri Peaks I League

The Angels have moved their way up and are currently sitting at the top of the Tri Peaks I league. The team currently sits with am 8-4 overall record, 3-1 in league play, and are 5th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Southeast Colorado was able to get the win over Lamar 5-1, lost to La Junta in a close game of 3-2, and beat Alamosa 9/26. The Angels were able to start strong and will be looking to continue their success in their remaining 5 games which will be against Rocky Ford on 10/3, Burlington in a double header on 10/5, Lamar on 10/8, and La Junta on 10/10.

Leading the league on the stat bord from Southeast Colorado are Bailley Sierra (So) who is ranked 3rd in home runs with 3, and Anna Wollert (So) who leads the league in ERA with a 2.28.

6. The Academy – Denver Metro League

Sitting at the top of the Denver Metro League, The Academy is currently 3-0 in league play and 11-5 overall. This last week, the Wildcats were able to get the win over Forge Christian 12-6 and Peak to Peak 13-1, but fell to University 15-2. The Wildcats have at least six games left and include hosting Weld Central and Skyview today, Elizabeth on 9/28, Jefferson Academy in a league game on 10/4, Forge Christian on 10/8, and Peak to Peak on the road on 10/10.

The Stat leaders in the league for the Wildcats is Mackenzie Pearson (Sr) who is 2nd in the league for home runs with 4, 2nd in the league for RBI with 25, 3RD in the league for runs with 30.

7. Rocky Ford

Currently in 7th  in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Rocky Ford is 3rd in the Tri Peaks I League with an 11-6-1 overall record, and a 3-1 league record. In the last week of play, the Meloneers were able to get the win over Florence 13-3, fell to Lamar 9-2, and beat La Junta 11-1. With only four games left, Rocky Ford will be looking to maintain their success to stay in the top 10 of the seeding index. These games will be against Alamosa on the road on 10/1, Southeast Colorado at home on 10/3, Limon at home on 10/8 and Larar on the road on 10/10. Rocky Fords pitcher, Leticia Garcia (Sr), is currently ranked 3rd in ERA in the league with a 2.69.

8. The Classical Academy – CSML North League

The Titans beat James Irwin this last week 17-1, fell to the league Leader Elizabeth 11-0, and beat Sierra 14-1. This gives TCA a 12-5 overall record, a 4-1 league record and puts them 2nd in the CSML North League and 8th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. There are six games left on the schedule for TCA, including WIdefiled on 9/28, Mitchell on 9/30, Sand Creek on 10/1, Mitchell on 10/3, Falcon on 10/8 and Elizabeth on 10/10, where the Titans will be looking to get as many wins as possible to keep their position in league and the seeding index.

TCA has some stat leaders that are at the top of the league including Ada Wilson (So) who is ranked 1st in the league for Home runs with 2, 1st in the league for RBI with 24, and 2nd in the league for runs with 24, Taytum Kimbro (Fr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for RBI with 21, and 3rd in the league for runs with 23, and Veronica Santos (Sr) who is 3rd in the league for RBI with 19.

9. Forge Christian

The Fury are currently 9th in the CHSAA Seeding Indexand 2nd in the Denver Metro League. Forge Christian fell to Strasburg (number 2 in the seeding index) 7-0, but was able to win their next three games which were Westminster 10-8, Arvada 8-0, and Peak to Peak 13-2. The Fury currently have an overall record of 12-5, and a league record of 2-1. The team has 6 games left on the schedule where the team will be looking to maintain their success, which will be against Jefferson Academy on 10/1 and 10/11, Wray/Yuma on 10/3 in a double header, The Academy on 10/8, and Arvada on 10/10.

League stat leaders for the team are Rio Beck (Jr) who is ranked 2nd for stolen bases with 11, and Julianna Alfaro (So) who is ranked 3nd in the league for ERA with a 4.28.

10. Wellington

With wins over Thompson Valley (6-1) and Northridge (14-3), and losses to Roosevelt (14-4), Berthoud (5-3), and Severance (11-7) this last week, Wellington is 10th in the CHSAA Seeding index, 5th in the Longs Peak League, have a 5-6 league record and are 10-8 overall. In order to keep the seeding index position, the last five games will be very important for the Eagles. These games will be against Mountain View on 10/1, Greeley Central on 10/3, Timnath on 10/5, Thompson Valley on 10/8, and Roosevelt on 10/10. League stat leaders for Wellington are Kiley Newberry (So) who is ranked 1st in the league for stolen bases with 15, Charley Somday (So) who has ranked 3rd in the league for Stolen bases with 14, and Jasmine Tafoya (Sr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for ERA with a 1.69.

18. Montezuma-Cortez – Western Slope League

With an 11-8 overall record and a 9-2 league record, the Panthers are 1st in the Western Slope League and 18th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Montezuma-Cortez beat Aspen in their double header last week, 25-0 and 17-1. The Panthers have three games left which will be against Rifle on 9/28 in a double header and Delta on 10/1. The team will be looking to get these wins to stay where they are in the seeding index.

Stat leaders in the league for the team are Aubrey Rutherford (Sr) who has 3 home runs and is ranked 2nd in the league for home runs, and ranked 1st in the league for runs with 33, Devyn Cornett (Sr) who is ranked 1st for RBI and ERA with 27 RBI and a 4.61 ERA, Neveah Istenes (Sr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for RBI with 27, and Saylor Martinez (So) who has 27 runs and is ranked 2nd in the league.

21. Arvada – Frontier League

Arvada is currently 3rd in the Frontier League, 21st in the CHSAA Seeding Index, and are 6-2 in league play and 11-5 overall. This last week they were able to beat Englewood 14-3, Middle Park 14-13, Jefferson 18-6, and Woodland Park 14-4, but fell to Forge Christian 8-0. There are at least six games remaining for Arvada where they will try to win to stay in the Lower twenties or below in the seeding index to make it to the post-season. These games will be against Adams City on 9/27, Fort Lupton on 10/1, Denver West on 10/4, Forge Christian on 10/10, and Kennedy in a double header on 10/12.

League stat leaders from Arvada are Amiah Picaso (Jr) who has 28 RBI and is ranked 3rd in the league, Alyssa Moreno (Jr) who is ranked 1st in the league for RBI with 33 and 2nd in the league for ERA with 4.91, and Alicia Montoya (Sr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for runs with 28, and 1st in the league for stolen bases with 20.

25. Florence – Tri Peaks II League

Sitting 1st in the Tri Peaks II league and 25th in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Florence is 2-0 in league play and 7-4-1 overall. This week was a bit rough for the Huskies, where they lost to Rocky Ford 13-3 and Canon City 14-6, but they were able to beat Woodland Park with 17-11. Florence still has several games left on their schedule, and this week they will play Gunnison on the road on 9/28, James Irwin on the road on 10/1, and Woodland Park at home on 10/3.

League Stat leaders for the Huskies are Addison Dalton (Fr) who has a RBI of 18 and is ranked 2nd and 1st for ERA with a 1.51, Lilly Roe (So) who is ranked 2nd in the league for runs with 24, and Clair Bosley (Jr) who has 24 runs and is ranked 3rd in the league,

33. Kennedy – Denver Prep League

Kennedy is currently sitting 1st in the Denver Prep league and 33rd in the CHSAA Seeding index. This places Kennedy just outside of the playoff cutoff currently. The Commanders have a 7-9 overall record and are 3-1 in league play.  Their lone league loss came this last week against Overland 16-5. They also lost to Pueblo East 12-3 but was able to get the win over Denver West 17-2. The team has 6 games left which will be against Alameda on 9/28, Lincoln on 10/1, Mullen on 10/3, Overland on 10/8, and Arvada in a double headers on 10/12. The team will be looking to get as many wins as they can to ensure their position on the playoffs.

Leading the team and league in stats are Genesis Lujan (Jr) who has 2 home runs, 20 RBI, 28 runs, 14 stolen bases, and a 8.13 ERA (Ranked 1st in the league for all stats), Amerie Herrera (So) who has 2 home runs, and a 9.13 ERA (2nd in league rankings for stats), Alexiah Lunas (Jr) who has 1 home run, 17 RBI, 17 runs, and 10 stolen bases, Giana Valdez who has 12 RBI and 12 runs, and Aleeya Garcia (Fr) who has 12 stolen bases.

38. Skyline – Granite Peaks League

Skyline is currently 1-14 overall, 0-8 in league play, 13th in league and 38th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Skyline lost this last week to Fairview 19-1, Longmont 19-0 and Monarch 15-3. The team will be looking to try to get some wins before the season ends when they face Fort Lupton on 9/27, Jefferson Academy on 9/28, Horizon on 10/1, Frederick on 10/3, Silver Creek on 190/7 and Niwot on 10/8.

40. Holyoke – Lower Platte League

The Dragons are 1st in the Lower Platte League with a 6-11 overall record and a 2-0 league record. The team is 40th in the CHSAA Seeding Index after beating Bennett in a double header 23-13 and 20-3. Holyoke will be looking to get wins to end the season and find success to keep their league rankings and potential move up in the seeding index. The end of the season schedule will be Platte Valley and Middle Park on 9/28, Wray/Yuma in a double header on 10/5, and Limon in a double header to end the season on 10/12.

Top players in the league from Holyoke are Parker Steggs (Sr) who has 2 home runs and is 1st in the league, and 2nd in the league for RBI with 14, has 24 runs and is 1st in the league, Fatima Nunez (Sr) who is ranked 1st in the league for RBI with 15, Elsie Crowder (Fr) who is ranked 2nd in the league for runs with 21, Madi Clapper (Sr) who is ranked 3rd in the league for runs with 18, and Hailey Clapper who is ranked 3rd in the league for stolen bases with 13.
