
Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Recap and Preview

This week we look at the top two 2A teams in each league and where they are at in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Then we look at total numbers for stats for each team.

Black Forest League
1. Simla
The Cub remain at the top of the CHSAA seeding Index with a perfect 15-0 overall record, a 5-0 league record, and are in the lead in the Black Forest League. Throughout the season, the team still has only lost a single set to Wiggins but has remained otherwise perfect. This last week, Simla was able to get wins over La Veta, Hoehne, Idalia, and Peyton. With six games remaining in the regular season, Simla will be looking to remain perfect and secure the number one spot in seeding for the postseason. The teams remaining games will be against Monument Academy on 10/4, Strasburg on 10/8, Merino on 10/10, Liberty Tree Academy on 10/17, Fowler on 10/24, and Fleming on 10/26. Overall, as a team, Simla has 419 kills, 118 serving aces, 30 total blocks, 448 digs, 392 assists, and 392 receptions.
2. Calhan
Sitting at number 34 in the CHSAA seeding index, Calhan is 2nd in the Black Forest League. The Bulldogs have a 10-7 overall record with a 4-1 league record, losing to the number one team in the league, Simla. In their most recent game, Calhan lost to Custer County 3-0 and lost to Swink 3-1. The team will try get as many wins as they can in the remainder of the season to stay within the cutoff for postseason play. These games will be against Fountain Valley on 10/3, Limon on 10/15, Liberty Tree Academy on 10/24, and Crowley County on 11/2.
Lower Platte League
2. Sedgewick County
The Cougars are currently sitting 2nd in their league behind Merino and are 2nd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Cougars are currently 12-1 overall with a 2-0 league record. These two league wins came this last week when Sedgwick County faced Wiggins and Wray and beat them 3-2 and 3-0 respectively. The Cougars still have several games left in the regular season and will be trying to get as many wins as they can to maintain their spot in the seeding index. The next few games for the team will be against Perkins County on 10/3 and Caliche on 10/8.
3. Haxtun
Sitting at number eight in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Haxtun is currently 3rd in the Lower Platte League with a 9-3 overall record and a 3-1 league record. The Bulldogs lone league loss came against Wiggins in a close battle of 3-2. This last week, the Bulldogs where able bounce back from their loss to Wiggins and beat Crowley County 3-0, Wray 3-2, and Cheyenne Wells 3-0. This week, Haxtun will face the leader of the Lower Platte League in Merino on 10/4 and then will face league opponent Yuma on 10/8. Haxtun altogether has 465 kills, 137 serving aces, 57 total blocks, 649 digs, 426 assists, and 773 receptions.
Tri-Peaks League
2. Colorado Springs Christian
With an 8-1 overall record and a 4-0 league record, the Lions are currently 2nd in the Tri-Peaks League. With their lone loss so far this season to Resurrection Christian, CSC is currently 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The teams most recent wins were over Woodland Park 3-0, St. Mary’s 3-0, and Jamer Irwin 3-0. The Lions will be looking to continue their success this week and for the rest of the season to retain their position in the seeding index. The next few opponents for CSC will be Salida on 10/3, Centauri on 10/4 and Lamar on 10/8. The team stats so far this season for Colorado Springs Christian are 326 kills, 106 serving aces, 43 total blocks, 549 digs, 257 assists, and 397 receptions.
Mile High League
3. Lyons
Sitting in 3rd in the Mile High League, Lyons is 10-2 overall, 4-1 in league play, and 4th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Lions lost last week to Flatirons Academy 3-1 but was able to bounce back and get wins over ECA 3-0, Cheraw 3-0, and Byers 3-0. The next few games for the Lions will be against Dawson School on 10/8 and Clear Creek on 10/10. For all of the following league games, Lyons will be looking to at least maintain their league position going into the postseason. So far for the season, the Lions have 387 kills, 127 serving aces, 48 blocks, 540 digs, 364 assists, and 537 receptions.
4. Gilpin County
The Eagles are currently 7-3 overall, 4-1 in the Mile High league and 4th in the Mile High League. Gilpin County sits at number 20 in the CHSAA Seeding Index after beating Union Colony Prep 3-0, Skyview Academy 3-0, and Front Range Christian 3-2. The Eagles will be looking to maintain their position the rest of the season to make it into the playoffs. This week, their opponents will be against Dawson School on 10/7 and DCA on 10/10. Team stats so far for the Eagles are 302 kills, 62 serving aces, 42 total blocks, 540 digs, 256 assists, and 587 receptions.
Southern Peaks League
1. Del Norte
Sitting at the top of the Southern Peaks League, Del Norte is 11-1 overall, 2-0 in league play and sits in 5th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Tigers got their first loss last week when they faced Sargent but was able to give them their first set loss of the season. Del Norte then was able to beat Dolores Huerta Prep 3-0 and Center 3-2. The Tigers will be looking to continue their success and remain at the top of the seeding index when they face South Park on 10/4, SCA on 10/5, and Crested Butte on 10/9. Team stats for Del Norte are 382 kills, 93 serving aces, 71 total blocks, 597 digs, and 150 assists.
2. Buena Vista
Sitting behind Del Norte in the Southern Peaks League is the Demons at number 2 in the Southern Peaks League. Buena Vista is currently 7-6 overall with a 4-1 league record and are 29th in the CHSAA seeding index. The team was able to get the win over Crested Butte 3-2, but then lost to Sanford 3-1, but bounced back and beat Custer County 3-1. This week will have a challenging game for the Demons in Sargent on 10/8. Then the team will face La Veta on 10/10. Collectively as a team, Buena Vista has 429 kills, 140 serving aces, 49 total blocks, 814 digs, 383 assists, and 877 receptions.
Santa Fe League
1. Swink
Leading the Santa Fe League, Swink is currently 11-2 overall, with a 7-1 league record and are number 6 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Lions are currently on a 10-game winning streak after beating Cheraw 3-0, Rocky Ford 3-0, and Calhan 3-1. Swink will be looking to keep their streak continuing as they enter the last month of the regular season. This next week of play, the team will face Hoehne on 10/8 and SCA on 10/9. As a team, Swink has 388 kills, 95 serving aces, 156 total blocks, 552 digs, 359 assists, and 490 receptions.
2. Rye
Rye currently sits at 12 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Thunderbolts are 8-4 overall, 4-1 in league play and are 2nd in the Santa Fe League. In the last week of play, Rye lost to Gunnison 3-1 and beat Fowler in a close game of 3-2. This week, the team will play Florence on 10/5, Fowler on 10/8 and Walsenburg on 10/10. As a team, the Thunderbolts have 419 kills, 96 serving aces, 59 total blocks, 1062 digs, 344 assists, and 775 receptions.
Metro League
4. Denver Christian
Denver Christian is currently the top 2A team in the Metro League at number 4. The Thunder is currently 12th in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 9-3 overall record, and a 2-1 league record. The team has won their last three games which were against SkyView Academy (3-0), Eagle Ridge Academy (3-0), and Jefferson Academy (3-2). They will have a busy week through the next few days as they will face Lamar and Vail Christian on 10/5, Forge Christian on 10/7, and St Mary’s Academy on 10/9. The team stats so far this season are 304 kills, 126 serving aces, 27 total blocks, 469 digs, 282 assists, and 462 receptions.
Western Slope League
1. West Grand
Sitting at the top of the Western Slope League and 16th in the CHSAA Seeding Index is West Grand. The Mustangs are 10-3 overall and 3-0 in league play. The team won all four games of September, including against North Park 3-0 and Plateau Valley 3-0, and will be looking to continue their success as we enter the last month of the regular season. Upcoming games for West Grand are De Beque on 10/3, Rangely on 10/4, Meeker on 10/5, and Middle Park on 10/7. Total stat numbers for the team are 327 kills, 71 serving aces, 38 total blocks, 748 digs, 302 assists, and 632 receptions.
2. Meeker
Meeker is currently 7-3 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record, are sitting 2nd in the Western Slope League and are 14th in the Western Slope League. The Cowboys are currently on a four-game win streak after defeating Rangely twice both 3-0, and Hayden 3-0. The team will be looking to continue their success as this week they will face Cedaredge on 10/4 and West Grand on 10/5 in a league title game. Overall, for the team, Meeker has 288 kills, 81 serving aces, 45 total blocks, 774 digs, 286 assists, and 471 receptions.
San Juan Basin League
2. Mancos
Sitting behind Dove Creek in the San Juan Basin League, Mancos sits number 2 in the league, and 23rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Bluejays have an 11-4 overall record with a 5-1 league record, with their lone league loss being to Dove Creek this past week. The wins for Mancos this last week were against Nucla 3-0 and Ouray 3-0. This week, the team will take on Dolores on 10/3 and Telluride on 10/5. As a team, the Bluejays have 496 kills, 138 serving aces, 37 total blocks, 884 digs, 448 assists, and 798 receptions.
3. Ignacio
Currently with a 7-5 overall record, Ignacio has a 5-2 league record, are 3rd in the San Juan Basin, and are 25th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Bobcats lost to Dove Creek last week 3-0 but was able to turn around and beat Dolores 3-0. This week, the team has off, but will resume play when they face Mancos on 10/10. Stats for the whole team are 303 kills, 120 serving aces, 47 total blocks, 792 digs, 272 assists, and 629 receptions.
Union Pacific League
3. Limon
Limon sits in 3rd in the Union Pacific League and at 27 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Badgers are 4-6 overall and 2-1 in league play. Limon lost their game against Merino 3-0, beat Peyton 3-1 and then lost to Bennett 3-1. The Badgers need to keep winning to maintain their spot in the seeding index to make it to the postseason. They will face Wiggins on 10/3, Fowler, Lamar, and Pueblo Central on 10/5, and Stratton on 10/8. For the season, the Badgers have 198 kills, 46 serving aces, 9 total blocks, 462 digs, 173 assists, and 516 receptions.
5. Burlington
With a 9-2 overall record, Burlington is 5th in the Union Pacific League with a 1-1 league record and are currently 11th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Cougars are on a three game winning streak after last week when they beat Cheyenne Wells 3-1 and Kiowa 3-0. They will be playing Yuma on 10/3, and Wray on 10/8. As a team, Burlington has 361 kills, 120 serving aces, 49 total blocks, 494 digs, 324 assists, and 531 receptions.
Foothills League
1. Ascent Classical Academy
Sitting in 26th in CHSAA Seeding Index, the Guardians are 9-5 overall, 5-0 in league play and are 1st in the Foothills League. Ascent Classical was on a five game win streak after beating Poudre Community 3-0, STEMSHR 3-1, and William Smith 3-0 but lost it when they lost to Loveland Classical 3-0.. The team will be looking to continue their success as they will face Nederland on 10.4, AWCPA on 10/7 and DECHS on 10/9. Together, the team has 125 kills, 74 serving aces, 16 total blocks, 129 digs, 15 assists, and 124 receptions.
2. Loveland Classical
Loveland Classical is 8-6 overall, 5-0 in league play and are 2nd in the Foothills League. The team is currently almost on the cusp of making the playoffs as they are sitting at number 35 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Lions lost to Otis last week 3-0 but was able to get the win over Poudre Community Academy 3-0. The team will be looking to continue their success to ensure their postseason place and will be facing Ascent Classical Academy on 10/2, William Smith on 10/7, and AWCPA on 10/9. The Lions this season have 173 kills, 98 serving aces, 23 total blocks, 281 digs, 156 assists, and 420 receptions.
Frontier League
5. Lake County
Sitting 5th in the Frontier League, Lake County is 6-4 overall, 2-1 in league play and are 28th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Panthers slit their success last week, beating The Pinnacle 3-1 to add a win to their record, but then fell to Arrupe Jesuit 3-0. The Panthers will be looking to bounce back and add more wins to their record and will be facing Fort Lupton on 10/3, Arvada on 10/5, and Middle Park on 10/9. Total stats for the team are 127 kills, 57 serving aces, 12 total blocks, 270 digs, 113 assists, and 296 receptions.
West Central League
1. Custer County
Sitting at the precarious spot of 32 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Custer County currently leads the West Central League with a 3-1 league record and a, 9-3 overall record. The Bobcats were able to get the win over Cotopaxi and Calhan last week, both 3-0, but fell to Buena Vista 3-1. This week, Custer County kicked off play against Crested Butte where they won 3-1. The Bobcats have a bit of a break and will resume play on 10/11 against Center.
