2A Volleyball: A look at the Season and Regional Matchups

As the volleyball season ascends towards it peak, 36 teams in 2A are all gearing up for the playoffs to determine who gets the privilege to advance to the state tournament.  Regionals is taking place across the state and is hosted by the top 12 seeds in the playoffs. The top team in each region will advance and get a chance to play for the State title. This week, we will recap all 36 teams and see how their season went and who they will need to beat in order to keep their season alive.

Region 1

1. Simla

Simla comes into the playoffs as the number one overall seed and will be the host to region 1. This season, the Cubs went 22-1 overall, with their lone loss being to Merino 3-, which snapped a 17 game winning streak. In the last game of the season, Simla faced Sedgwick County in a battle over  first place. Simla was able to get the win 3-1, which solidified their number one position in the seeding index. Simla has not lost to a 2A school yet this season and will be looking to maintain that record through the rest of the playoffs. Simla will kickoff the playoffs against St. May’s, and then will face Ignacio in match 3.

24. Ignacio

The Bobcats made it to the playoffs in region 1 as the 24 seed. This season, Ignacio went 14-9 overall on the season, 10-2 in league play and ended 2nd in the San Juan Basin league. The losses for Ignacio were against Del Norte, Mancos, Sedgwick County, Denver Christian, Dove Creek (x2), Poudre, Pagos Springs, and Sargent in the last game of the regular season. Some of these teams find themselves in the playoffs as well as Telluride who Ignacio was able to get the win over earlier in the season. Ignacio will face St. Mary’s in match 2 in region 1 and then will face Simla in match 3.

St. Mary’s was the last team to make it to the postseason this year at the 36 seed. This season the Pirates were able to go 12-11 overall, 7-5 in league play and finished 6th in the Tri-Peaks League. The losses for St. Mary’s were Sterling, Rye, Kent Denver, Prospect Ridge Academy, Colorado Academy, Lamar, CSCHS, Banning Lewis, Salida, The Vanguard School and Eagle Ridge Academy. The Pirates were able to get a win the last two games of the season which were against Banning Lewis and Academy and Ellicott, which is the momentum St. Mary’s will be looking to carry into regionals this week. St. Mary’s will play Simla in match 1 and then Ignacio in match 2.

Hosting Region 2 as the 2nd seed, Sedgwick County ends the regular season with a 19-4 overall record, a 7-1 league record and 2nd in the Lower Platte League. The Cougars 4 losses were against Chase County, Idalia, Merino and Simla in the last game of the season which gave Sedgwick County 2nd in the 2A bracket. The longest streak for Sedgwick County was 9 wins in a row, and now the Cougars will look to get momentum going to take the region and advance to the final weekend of the 2024 season. Sedgwick County will play Telluride to start the playoffs and then will face Mancos in the 3rd match of region 2.

23. Mancos

Mancos makes it to the playoffs with a 16-7 overall record, a 9-3 league record, 3rd in the San Juan Basin League and as the 23rd seed. The bluejays have won 8 games in a row in the regular season and have lost to Dove Creek (x2), West Grand, Cedaredge, Ignacio, Saford, and Telluride. With 7 games won in a row in the regular season, Mancos will be looking to carry this momentum and will try to make it to the last weekend of the season. Mancos will play Telluride on match 2 and Sedgwick County in match 3.

Telluride enters the postseason at the 35 seed, barley getting into the postseason this year. Despite the tough start to the season Telluride was able to go 14-9 on the season, 9-4 in league play and ended 4th in the San Juan Basin League. The losses on the Miners record this season were against Salida, Buena Vista, North Fork. Dove Creek, Pagosa Springs, Ignacio (x2), Mancos, and Gunnison. The longest win streak for the team was 6 games. Telluride will be looking to pull the upset in order to advance onto the final week of the season. Telluride will face Sedgwick County in match 1 and then Mancos in match 2.

Region 3

3. Lyons

Lyons is the host of region 3 and comes into the postseason as the number 3 seed with a 20-3 overall record, a 12-1 league record and 2nd in the Mile High League. The Lions had a 13 game win streak that was ended in the last game of the season to St. Mary’s Academy. The other losses on Lyons record are to Forge Christian and Flatirons Academy. Lyons and Front Range have faced off earlier this season, where Lyons got the win 3-0. The team will be looking to have the same success over Front Range Christian in the first match of the region and get a win over Buena Vista in the 3rd match to advance to final weekend of the season.

22. Buena Vista

Buena Vista went through the regular season and ended with a 13-10 overall record with a 4-2 league record, finished 3rd in the Southern Peaks League and claimed the 22nd seed. The Demons had a hard time getting large momentum swings working in their favor, and the losses on their record are from Mancos, Salida. Strasburg, Front Range Christian, Vail Christian, Sanford, Sargent, Del Norte, Lake County and Cedaredge. Buena Vista comes in as a higher seed than Front Range Christian, despite a loss to them in the regular season, and will be looking to get revenge and get a win over them in match 2 and over Lyons in match 1.

34. Front Range Christian

The Falcons enter into region 3 after a mixed success season, going 12-11 overall, 7-6 in league play, finishing 6th in the Mile High League and entering the postseason as the 34 seed. Front Range Christian has lost to Windsor Charter, Banning Lewis, ECA, Ignacio, Denver Christian, DCA, Clear Creek, Lyons, Gilpin County and Heritage Christian, but won a very important game earlier in the season against Buena Vista. The Falcons will be looking to repeat this success and pull the upset over Lyons in order to advance to the final week of the season. The Falcons will face Lyons in match 1 of region 3 and Buena Vista in Match 2.

Region 4

4. Swink

Swink is the host of region 4 after having a successful season of 19-4 overall, 7-1 in league, and 1st in the Santa Fe League. Swink finds themselves as the 4th seed in the postseason, with the only losses on their records being to Fowler, McClave, Hoehne, and Rye. With 10 games  won in a row this season, Swink has yet to face the two teams in their region this season, but they will be looking to maintain their success and advance to the final weekend of the season. Swink will face Loveland Classical in the match 1 and Burlington in match 3.

21. Burlington

Burlington comes into region 4 as the 21st seed, after going 14-9 overall on the season, 4-3 in league play, and finishing 4th in the Union Pacific Leage. After winning six games in a row to start the season, the Cougars found a little tribulation and never got the large winning streak back that they started. Losses for Burlington this season include Sedgewick County, Genoa-Hugo/Karval, Yuma, Wray, Hi-Plains, Flagler, Idalia, Stratton, and Akron. Burlington has not faced Loveland Classical or Swink yet, but will be fighting for the upset to advance to the next round. Burlington will face Loveland Classical in match 2 and then Swink in match 3.

33. Loveland Classical

The Lions ended their regular season after going 14-9 overall, 9-1 in league and 2nd in the Foothills League and got into the postseason as the 33 seed. Loveland Classical was able to string together 5 consecutive wins in the middle of the season, which followed 5 losses in a row. The losses for Loveland Classical were against Peak to Peak, Lyons, Flatirons Academy, Heritage Christian, DCA, Otis, STEMSHR, Ascent Classical and Addenbrooke Classical. In order for Loveland Classical to advance to the final weekend of the season, they will have to upset both Swink and Burlington. Loveland Classical will face Swink in match 1 and Burlington in match 2.

5. Colorado Springs Christian

Colorado Springs Christian enters the postseason as the 5 seed and as the host of region 5. This season, the lions, went 19-4 overall, 11-1 in league play, and ended 2nd in the Tri-Peaks League. The teams went on a 7 game win streak in the season and lost to Resurrection Christian, Lamar, Merino and Alamosa, and are currently on a 4 game win streak that they will be looking to continue throughout their postseason Journey. Colorado Springs Christian will play Lake County in match 1 and Fowler in match 3.

20. Fowler

This season, the Grizzlies went 13-10 overall on the season with a 6-2 league record, ended 4th in the Santa Fe League, and comes into the postseason as the 20 seed. Fowler was able to win 5 games in a row this season, but had to many rocky spots to go beyond that. Teams that Fowler lost to were The Vanguard School, Hoehne (x2), Rye (x2), Lamar, Simla, Swink Alamosa and Limon. The Grizzlies will be looking to extend their season but will need to beat Colorado Springs Christian and Lake County in order to do so. Fowler will face Lake County in match 2 and Colorado Springs Christian in match 3.

32. Lake County

Lake Couty makes it into the post season with a 13-10 overall record, a 6-5 league record, 6th in the Frontier League, and as the 32 seed. The Panthers were able to get 5 wins in a row during the season, and have lost to Gilpin County, Vail Christian, Gunnison, Arrupe Jesuit (x2), Fort Luptin, Middle Park, Bennett, North Fork and Salida. Lake County is currently on a 2 game winning streak and will be looking to extend their streak this week and will look to upset Colorado Springs and Fowler. Lake County will face C.S. Christian in match 1 and Fowler in match 2.

6. Wiggins

Wiggins ends their regular season after going 14-9 overall, 6-2 in league play, ending 3rd in the Lower Platte League, and as the 6th seed in the postseason tournament. Wiggins will be hosting Dayspring Christian and Ascent Classical in region 6. The Tigers were able to get 5 consecutive wins in season but their losses were sprinkled throughout the season, preventing larger win streaks. The teams losses were against Simla (x2), Platte Valley, Fleming, Sedgwick County, Alamosa, CSCHS and Strasburg. Wiggins will face ACA in match 1 and DCA in match 3.

This season, DCA was able to get a five game win streak and a couple of 4 game win streaks, but lost to Windsor Charter, Merino, Haxtun (x2), Lyons, Idalia, Hoehne, Heritage Christian, and Flatirons Academy. These teams have yet to meet up this season, but the Eagles will be looking to get the win over ACA in match 2 and Wiggins in match 3.

31. Ascent Classical

ACA makes it into the postseason as the 31 seed after going 16-7 overall, 9-1 in league play, and taking 1st in the Foothills league. The Guardians had a couple of times that they were able to get 5 wins in a row, and lost this season to Kent Denver, Regis Groff, Lyons, LPRC, Loveland Classical and STEMSHR. ACA will need to pull the upset over Wiggins in match 1 and DCA in match 2.

7. Rye

As the host of region 7, Rye comes into the playoffs as the number 7 seed after going 19-4 overall, 7-1 in league play, and finishing 2nd in the Santa Fe League.  The four losses for the Thuderbotz were against Lamar, Swink, Buena Vista, and Gunnison. Rye is currently on a 12 game winning streak that they will be looking to continue through this week and into the next. Rye will face Holyoke in match 1 and West Grand in match 3.

18. West Grand

West Grand wraps up their regular season after going 15-6 overall, 8-2 in league play, and finishing 3rd in the Western Slope League. The Mustangs are the 18 seed in the postseason and will be facing Rye and Holyoke to try to advance to the final week of the season. Losses for West Grand include against Plateau Valley, Dove Creek, Sanford, Rangely, Meeker, and Middle Park. The Mustangs currently have a four game win streak going and will be looking to keep it alive as they face Holyoke it match 2 and Rye in match 3.

30. Holyoke

Holyoke enters into the playoffs as the 30 seed after having mixed success this season. The Dragons ended their regular season with an 8-14 overall record, a 3-5 league record and they finished 6th in the Lower Platte League. The team had a tough season against some tough opponents and lost to Idalia, Haxtun (x2), Fleming, Arickaree, Otis, Merino, Cheyenne Wells, Perkins County, Prairie, Yuma, Sedgwick County, Wiggins, and Burlington. Holyoke will have to pull some upsets if they wish to continue into next week and will have to snap their current 4 game loss streak. They will face Rye in match 1 and West Grand in match 2.

Region 8

8. Del Norte

Del Norte enters the postseason with only two losses on the season, going 19-2 overall on the season, 6-0 in league play, finishing 1st in the Southern Peaks League and as the host of region 8 as the number 8 seed in the playoff bracket. Del Norte was able to have a nine game winning streak that was snapped by Sargent and a 10 game win streak that was broken by McClave. Del Norte will be looking for another success run this weekend so that the tigers can make it into the final weekend of the season. The team will face Fountain Valley in match 1 and Caprock Academy in match 3.

17. Caprock Academy

The Eagles begin their playoff journey after going 17-4 overall in the regular season, 6-4 in league play, finishing 5th in the Western Slope league and securing the 17th seed in the playoffs. Caprock Academy had put together 10 consecutive wins during the regular season and had losses to Rangely, who they were able to also get a win over, Vail Christian, Meeker and West Grand. The Eagles will be looking to advance into the final week of the season and beat Foutain Valley in match 2 and Del Norte in Match 3.

29. Fountain Valley

Fountain Valley makes it into the playoffs as the 29 seed after going 13-4 overall on the season, 5-2 in league play, and finishing 3rd in Black Forest. The Danes started off the season with 5 wins in a row and then sprinkled in some losses throughout similar runs in the season. Losses for the team include against Banning Lewis, Simla, Pueblo Central, Calhan and ECA. Fountain Valley won their las game of the regular season against Miami-Yoder and will be looking to continue that success this weekend. The Danes will face Del Norte in match 1 and Caprock Academy in match 2.

9. Meeker

16. Sanford

The Mustangs were able to win 6 games in a row during the season and had losses against La Veta, Gunnison, Swink, Del Norte, Centauri, Sargent, Rye and Dove Creek. The team will be looking to get some wins this weekend and advance into the final weekend of the season. Sanford will face Limon in match 2 and Meeker in match 3.

28. Limon

Limon wraps up their regular season and comes into the postseason as the 28 seed after going 9-14 overall, 3-3 in league and finishing 5th in the Union Pacific League. Limon had tougher season this year, but was able to get wins over Deer Trail, Kit Carson, Flagler, Peyton, Pueblo Central, Byers (x2), Yuma, and Fowler. Limon will be looking to keep their success going and create some upsets as they will face Meeker in match 1 and Sanford in match 2.

With a 15 consecutive game win streak, The Eagles only losses were to Peak to Peak, Lyons, Sedgwick County and Flatirons Academy. The team will be looking to break their current two game loss streak and get wins over Calhan in match 1 and Vail Christian in match 3 to move onto next weekend.

The most games that the Thunder have been able to string together is 3 and have losses against Windsor Charter, Strasburg, Colorado Academy, Lamar, Vail Christian, Stargate School and Peak to Peak. The Thunder are already on a 2 game win streak and will be looking to break the 3 game cycle this week and will face Custer County in match 1 and Haxtun in match 3.
