Class 2A Girls Basketball League Predictions

Class 2A Girls Basketball League Predictions

The official start to basketball was last week and most teams will kick off play sometime next week.  We dive into each league that we are putting as Class 2A.  Some mixed Classes will be in the 3A League Predictions.  Remember, for Class 2A you now must be ranked inside the top 32 of the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index to make it to Regionals or win your league (Minimum of 5 teams).  Regionals will still be first two rounds with the highest seed as the host and the brackets will not be reseeded before state.  Class 1A will still play a full Consolation Round.

The Mile High League will get an automatic berth into regionals.  Only the top team regardless of Class will get the automatic berth.  Gilpin County is my pick to win the Mile High League.  Gilpin County returns 4 of their top 5 scorers from last and should be a threat to reach the state tournament.  Gilpin County will need depth to step up.  Heritage Christian, SkyView Academy, Flatirons Academy, and Machebeuf look to be the main threat to the league title and regional contenders.  My dark horse pick is Flatirons Academy.  They have a lot of tradition but move into a much tougher league and lose key players.

3.  Sargent

4. Center

5. Trinidad

6. Crested Butte

The 2A Southern Peaks will get an automatic berth into regionals since they have over 5 teams.  The SPL should be very competitive this season with the top 4 teams all being regional contenders and possibly a pair of state tournament teams.  Sanford is my pick to win the Southern Peaks League.  Sanford returns all but one senior from last season and will look to get over the hump of losing in the regional finals.  Del Norte, Sargent, and Center will all challenge for the league crown and all should be regional contenders.  Center is my dark horse pick, can they find enough guard play to go along with the size they have this season.

5. Swink

6. Rocky Ford

7. Swallows Charter

8. Walsenburg

The 2A Santa Fe League will get an automatic berth into regionals this year because they have over 5 teams in the league.  The Santa Fe League could be very competitive with the top 5 teams, maybe even 6 being in contention for regionals and the league title.   Hoehne is my pick to win the Santa Fe League.  Hoehne will return nearly their entire roster but lose their top scorer from last season.  Fowler, Las Animas, Crowley County, and Swink look to be the main contenders for the league title and a regional berth.  My dark horse pick is Las Animas.  Las Animas return their top scorer and top rebounder but they will have to find more scoring this season to push for the league title and possibly a state tournament berth.

1. Merino

2. Sedgwick County

3. Akron

4. Holyoke

5. Haxtun

6. Caliche (1A)

The 2A/1A Lower Platte will get a automatic berth into regionals because they have more than 5 teams.  The 2A/1A Lower Platte could be very competitive this season as the top 3 teams all being very competitive and in the running for a state tournament berth.  The other 3 teams are also regional contenders and should build off last season.  Merino is my pick to win the Lower Platte League.  Merino return 7 of their top 8 players and will be in contention to defend their State Championship.  Sedgwick County and Akron as mentioned will be the main contenders for the league title and also in the running to make a run for the state tournament.  Holyoke, Haxtun, and Caliche I feel could easily battle into regionals and should be much improved this season.  Holyoke is my dark horse pick.  Holyoke returns a lot of talented juniors but can they take that next step this year.

5. Hayden

6. Soroco

7. North Park (1A)

8. Caprock Academy

9. Vail Christian

The 2A/1A Western Slope League will get an automatic berth into regionals.  Only the top team regardless of Class will get the automatic berth.  The Western Slope League will be very competitive with the top 4 teams expecting to reach regionals and most hoping to get to the state tournament.  Rangely is my pick to win the Western Slope League.  Rangely made the state tournament last year and they want to get back again this year.  Rangely returns their top two scorers but lose key rebounding and height from a year ago.  Plateau Valley, West Grand, and De Beque look to be the main challengers for the league crown and the main teams looking to get to regionals.  Hayden is my dark horse pick.  Can they challenge the top 4 teams and push for regionals.

2A/1A West Central (Will not get an automatic berth into regionals)

1. Cotopaxi (1A)

2. Custer County

3. Cripple Creek (1A)

4. South Park

The 2A/1A West Central will not get an automatic berth into Regional and will have to qualify for Regionals by being ranked inside the top 32 of the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Going forward I will move the 2A/1A West Central into Class 1A.  Cotopaxi is my pick to win the West Central.  Cotopaxi returns their top scorer from last season but depth must step up around her for Cotopaxi to hold onto the league crown.  Custer County and South Park could both challenge for the league crown.  Custer County I believe is a regional contender in Class 2A.

My predictions for West Central

League Champion: Cotopaxi

Regional Contenders: Cotopaxi, Custer County, South Park

Dark Horse: South Park

Player of the League: Hayden Eggleston Jr. Cotopaxi

1. Burlington

2. Stratton (1A)

3. Byers

4. Genoa-Hugo (1A)

5. Limon

6. Flagler (1A)

7. Deer Trail (1A)

The 2A/1A Union Pacific will get an automatic berth into regionals.  Only the top team regardless of Class will get the automatic berth.  Burlington is my pick to win the Union Pacific League.  I think the league will be much tougher this season.  Burlington returns 3 of their top 5 scorers from last year but should be a state tournament team.  Burlington will be tested by Stratton, Byers, Genoa-Hugo, and Limon.  Limon is my dark horse pick.  I also believe Stratton, Byers, Genoa-Hugo, and Limon can be regional contenders as well.  Limon has a ton of tradition but they lose a lot of senior talent can they reload on the go.

My predictions for Union Pacific

3A/2A/1A San Juan

1. Dove Creek

2. Ridgway

3. Mancos

4. Nucla

5. Telluride (3A)

6. Dolores

The 3A/2A/1A San Juan League will get an automatic berth into regionals.  Only the top team regardless of Class will get the automatic berth.  The San Juan League could be very competitive this season and I could see possibly 4 maybe 5 teams getting into regionals in their respective classes.  Dove Creek is my pick to win the San Juan League.  Dove Creek does lose a few key seniors but returns enough talent to win the league and be a contender in Class 2A.  Nucla, Ridgway, Telluride, and Mancos are all going to challenge for the league crown and all will be in regional contention.  My dark horse pick is Mancos.  Mancos lose key seniors and a transfer, and I am interested to see how they play this season.

My predictions for San Juan

Regional Contenders: Dove Creek, Nucla, Ridgway, Telluride, Mancos

Dark Horse: Mancos

Player of the League: Ralynn Hickman Sr. Dove Creek

2A Black Forest

1. Simla

2. Calhan

3. CS School

4. Kiowa

5. Monument Academy

6. Liberty Tree

The 2A Black Forest will get an automatic berth into regionals due to having more than 5 teams.  I am curious if the 2A Black Forest and 3A Black Forest will be combined if anyone has that answer please shoot me a message or email.  Simla is my pick to win the 2A Black Forest League.  Simla returns a ton of talent from their 3rd place finish a year ago.  I consider them to be the front runner for the state title.  Simla returns 4 of their top 6 scorers from a year ago including their top 3.  Simla will have to find depth this season as that was a key weakness from a year ago.  Calhan and CS School will be the main challenger for the league title, and they will also look to contend for a regional spot.  I am also going with Monument Academy and Liberty Tree as dark horses because they either don’t have a roster from last year or are new teams this year.

My predictions for District 8

League Champion: Simla

Regional Contenders: Simla, Calhan, CS School

Dark Horse: CS School, Liberty Tree, Monument Academy

Player of the League: Carlee Cox So. Simla

Others to watch for: Kylie Maranville Sr. Simla, Katie Gotschall Jr. Simla, Kylie Brickell Sr. Simla, Aubrie Waugh Jr. Calhan, Savannah Stewart So. Calhan, Kailey Peterson Sr. Calhan, Sophia Baldwin Jr. CS School, Karina Vidales Sr. Kiowa
