Class 2A Football Preview-State Championship

By: Anthony Garcia

What has turned into the norm in Class 2A, we have the #3 seed vs the #9 Seed.  A great matchup to end a great weekend of Football.  Both teams will hit the field in Pueblo at 5pm on Saturday at Dutch Clark Stadium.  We will be providing updates on Facebook plus posting highlights as we get them!  Good Luck to all teams!

(Don’t have pictures for each team, If I could get 1 for each that would be great!)

#3 Classical Academy (12-0) vs #9 Wellington (10-2), Saturday 11/30 at 5pm

Classical Academy punched their ticket into the State Championship with a 41 to 28 win over #2 Basalt.  This game had all the ups and downs with TCA taking a quick 14 to 0 lead to see if evaporate and tied with Basalt in the 3rd Quarter 21 to 21.  The fourth Quarter continued the excitement with TCA jumping out to a 28 to 21 lead and punching one more in to take a 35 to 21 lead, but Basalt never gave up scoring one last time and was just not able to complete the comeback.  Defensively TCA did give up some yards but did enough to get the win.  TCA forced 3 sacks in the game by Alex Gould, Braden Godoy, and Ridge Blackwood.  TCA also forced four turnovers in the game, which was a big reason for the win.  TCA had a pair of INTS by JD Packard & Hayden Gustafson and a pair of Fumble Recoveries by Hayden Gustafson & Braden Godoy.  6 TCA players were in double digits for tackles with Elijah Wright (24 tackles) and Caden Sanchez (18 Tackles) leading the way for the Titans.  Offensively TCA racked up 385 yards of total offense.  QB Andrew Brown had 177 yards passing, 2 TDs and 1 INT.  The rushing attack was led by RB Jackson Schipfer who had 101 yards rushing and 1 TD.  Hayden Gustafson led all WR’s with 54 yards receiving and 1 TD.

Wellington punched their ticket into the State Championship by defeating Eaton 45 to 14.  Don’t let the score fool you, this was a tight game and only a few errors made the difference in this being a lopsided score.  Wellington was up early 14 to 0 before Eaton cut into the lead with just 3 minutes left in the 2nd Quarter.  Wellington took a kickoff return after the Eaton touchdown to the House and that turned out to be the difference with Wellington leading 21 to 7 at halftime.  Defensively Wellington played outstanding holding Eaton to just 14 points and closing things out in the 4th quarter.  Wellington forced 3 INTS in the game by Huston Willhite, Tyler Shaffer, and Owen Gabbert.  Wellington did not have any sacks, but they kept the pressure on the QB with Ezra Batjargal having 5 QB hurries.  Teagan Greiman led all Eagles with 8 tackles while Ethan Thurnes had 6 tackles as the #2 tackler.  Offensively Wellington racked up 349 yards of total offense.  QB Tanner Gray had 3 completed passes for 32 yards and 1 TD but also ran for 58 yards and 2 rushing TDs.  RB Cash Altschwager lead all rushers with 109 yards and 1 TD and RB Cyle Kisner also had a productive day with 77 yards rushing and 1 TD.

Series: These two teams have not meet since the MaxPreps Era.  They did have three common opponents this season.  Classical Academy defeated Eaton (28-17) and Berthoud (20-7) and Wellington defeated Eaton (35-10 & 45-14) and lost to Berthoud (14-6).
