Class 2A Boys Basketball Weekly Report

We are around the halfway point of the season and have around 35 days left of regular season play.  We will look at the top 10 teams according to the MileHigh Prep Report Rankings plus we will look at another 6 teams ranked high in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Good Luck to all teams this weekend!

#1 Simla (6-1), Seeding Index #1

Simla has been the #1 team in Class 2A since the beginning of the season and continue to hold onto the top spot.  Simla has played a tough schedule this season and just this year (2025) they already have wins over former 3A #1 Yuma (72-65) and #5 Byers (58-47).  Simla also defeated #2 Crowley County (68-61) and their lone loss on the season is to 3A #4 Strasburg.  Simla this weekend will face rival Peyton (4-5) and Hoehne (3-6).  Simla has been powered by sophomore Tatum Kocerha (23.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg), Caston Cox (16.9 ppg, 3.1 apg), and Treven Kocerha (11.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg). 

#2 Crowley County (6-1), Seeding Index #2

Crowley County has been the #2 team since the beginning of the season with their lone loss to #1 Simla.   Crowley County has played a bit of a tougher schedule this season with quality wins over 3A Monte Vista (72-42), 3A Denver Christian (54-35), and 1A Holly (68-33).  The next two weeks for Crowley County will be very tough with multiple top or traditionally tough teams.  Crowley County will face 3A Peyton (4-5) on Friday and they won’t play again till 1/24 when they face defending state champions Limon (3-3).  Crowley County is led by senior Gunner Hughes (25.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg) and Anthoni Walter (21.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg).

#3 Sanford (8-4), Seeding Index #6

Sanford comes in at #3 in the rankings and have already played 12 games on the season.  Sanford is more than halfway done with their schedule and this junior lead roster has them sitting as a top team in 2A once again.  Sanford has four quality losses on the season to 3A #6 Centauri, 3A #7 Salida, 3A Buena Vista, and 2A #4 Mesa Vista NM.  Sanford has quality wins over Crested Butte, Hoehne, 4A Pueblo Centennial, #10 Fowler, 1A #4 Sierra Grande, Escalante NM, and Custer County.  Sanford will face #10 Fowler for the second time this season Friday. 

#4 Plateau Valley (9-1), Seeding Index #5

Plateau Valley comes into the week as the #5 team in the MileHigh Prep Report rankings and sit at 9-1 overall.  Plateau Valley lone loss of the season is to 4A Fort Lupton (6-4) who is considered a top 20 team in Class 4A.  Plateau Valley has stuck to mostly Western Slope teams again this season, but they do have quality wins over 3A Roaring Fork, 3A Grand Valley, 1A Ouray, and 1A De Beque.  Plateau Valley has just one game this weekend as they face West Grand (1-10) on Saturday.  Plateau Valley has been lead by senior Jack Vig (16.9 ppg, 10.0 rpg), Colter Ralston (11.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg), and Jackson Bevan (9.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg).

#5 Byers (8-2), Seeding Index #3

Byers comes into the fifth week of the season ranked as the #5 team.  Byers sits at 8-2 overall and one of the top teams in the Union Pacific League.  Byers two losses on the season are to 4A Bennett and #1 Simla.  Byers has played a tough schedule and have quality wins over 1A #4 Sierra Grande, 1A Evangelical Christian, 3A Lyons, 1A Elbert, 3A Wiggins, and 3A Denver Christian.  Byers has just one game this weekend as they face 1A Genoa-Hugo (1-7) on Friday.  Byers is powered by junior Quincy Eacret (12.8 ppg, 2.7 apg), James Maes (9.6 ppg, 2.2 apg), and Cameron Eastwood (9.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg).

#6 Bishop Machebeuf (5-2), Seeding Index #8

Bishop Machebeuf comes into the week ranked #6 and sit with a record of 5-2 overall.  Bishop Machebeuf will play a lot of games down the stretch as they played just four games in 2024.  Bishop Machebeuf has kicked 2025 off on the right foot defeating 3A Lyons and 3A SkyView Academy both quality wins.  Machebeuf does have two losses on the season to 3A #8 Vanguard and 3A #10 Windsor Charter.  Bishop Machebeuf will have two games this weekend as they face 3A Dawson School (3-4) tonight and 1A #3 Flatirons Academy (6-1) on Saturday. 

#7 Loveland Classical (8-1), Seeding Index #4

Loveland Classical comes into the week ranked #7 and were one of the few teams who moved in this week’s rankings.  Loveland Classical jumped two spots this week to #7.  Loveland Classical sits at 8-1 on the season and have not played the toughest schedule so far.  Loveland Classical best wins came in 2024 when they defeated 3A Lyons (3-4), Twin Peaks Classical (6-4), 3A Estes Park (5-5), and 3A STEM Highlands Ranch (8-2).  Loveland Classical will have at least 7 quality opponents left on their schedule.  Loveland Classical will have one game this weekend when they face 1A Front Range Baptist (6-2).  Loveland Classical is led by Trevan Coberly (17.0 ppg, 2.7 apg), Hudson Ruppert (11.2 ppg, 8.8 rpg), and Jackson Jensen (10.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg).

#8 Haxtun (5-5), Seeding Index #11

Haxtun enters the week ranked #8 falling one spot from last week.  Haxtun sits at 5-5 overall and are currently on a bit of a slide losing 3 of their last four games.  Haxtun has played a quality schedule with losses to Perkins NE, 3A #2 Highland, 3A Wiggins, Kimball NE, and 1A #6 Otis.  Haxtun does have quality wins as well defeating #9 Sedgwick County, 3A Wiggins, and Akron.  Haxtun will have a pair of games this weekend as they face 1A #9 Peetz (8-2) on Friday and rival Holyoke (7-3) on Saturday.  Haxtun has been lead by junior Chase Goddard (13.3 ppg, 2.0 apg), Ryland Wolff (9.4 ppg, 8.2 rpg), and Madden Larsen (9.1 ppg, 2.3 apg).

#9 Sedgwick County (5-2), Seeding Index #12

Sedgwick County entered the week ranked #9 and they moved up one spot from last week.  Sedgwick County is currently 5-2 overall and is considered a top contender for the Lower Platte League Title.  Sedgwick County has not played the toughest schedule with quality wins over South Platte NE and Wiggins.  Sedgwick County losses are to #8 Haxtun and 3A Wray.  Sedgwick County plays a pair of games this weekend as they face 1A Stratton (3-4) tonight and 1A Caliche (3-4) on Friday.  Sedgwick County is led by Tate Renquist (14.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg), Joshua Palic (12.1 ppg, 12.4 rpg), and Jaxon Carlson (10.3 ppg, 3.6 apg).

#10 Fowler (7-2), Seeding Index #7

Fowler rounds out the top 10 this week as they enter the rankings for the first time this season.  Fowler is 7-2 overall and riding a two-game winning streak plus winner of 4 of their last 5 games.  Fowler has two losses on the season falling to Sanford and Frontier Academy in 2024.  Fowler does have some quality wins over Vail Mountain, Center, and 3A Thomas MacLaren.  Fowler will have a pair of games against San Luis Valley schools this weekend as they head over to face #3 Sanford (8-4) on Friday and Center (7-3) on Saturday.  Fowler has been led in scoring by Isaiah Montoya (15.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg), Hagen McCuistion (9.8 ppg, 2.0 apg), and Cael True (8.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg).

Heritage Christian (5-3), Seeding Index #9

Heritage Christian fell out of the rankings last week falling from #8 to #12 in the rankings.  Heritage Christian sits at #9 in the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index.  Heritage Christian is currently 5-3 overall and winners of 5 of their last 6 games.  Heritage Christian did lose last weekend to 3A SkyView Academy (74-50) and also in 2024 to 3A Wiggins and 3A #9 Liberty Common.  Heritage Christian does lack quality wins as their best win is over 1A #6 Otis in 2024.  Heritage Christian will play one game this weekend against 3A Clear Creek (3-6) but they have a huge game on 1/21 against 1A #3 Flatirons Academy.  Heritage Christian is led by Levi Hermsen (21.8 ppg, 3.0 apg), Alex Lundy (14.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg), and David Kubie (11.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg).

Golden View Classical (7-3), Seeding Index #10

Golden View Classical sits at #10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index and #15 in the MileHigh Prep Report Rankings.  Golden View Classical comes in at 7-3 overall and winners of 6 of their last 7 games.  Golden View Classical has not played the toughest schedule so far this season.  Golden View Classical best wins are over 3A STEM Highlands Ranch (8-2) and 1A Denver Waldorf (6-2).  Golden View Classical has one bad loss on the season to 3A Addenbrooke Classical (3-7) but two other quality losses to 3A Lyons and 3A #10 Windsor Charter.  Golden View Classical will play one game this weekend against 3A William Smith (1-6) and on 1/22 will face a quality opponent in Two Roads Charter (5-4).  Golden View Classical is led by Luke Chronowski (16.3 ppg, 3.3 apg) and Jacob Walker (12.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg).

 Vail Mountain (5-3), Seeding Index #13

Vail Mountain sits at #13 in the CHSAA Seeding Index and #13 in the MileHigh Prep Report rankings.  Vail Mountain is 5-3 overall and winners of 3 of their last 4 games.  Vail Mountain also has not played the toughest schedule and have some of the top teams in the Western Slope ahead of them.  Vail Mountain three losses are all quality losses to 3A #2 Highland, #10 Fowler, and 5A Battle Mountain.  The quality wins department is what is lacking for Vail Mountain as their best win is over 4A Pueblo Centennial (4-7) and Vail Christian (3-4).  Vail Mountain schedule will toughen up going forward as they face 1A #10 De Beque (6-4) on Friday, Hayden (1-9) on Saturday, and 3A Meeker on Tuesday.  Vail Mountain has been powered by Charlie Vidal (15.8 ppg, 9.3 rpg), and Cole Lewis (11.6 ppg, 4.6 spg).

Holyoke (7-3), Seeding Index #18

Holyoke is ranked #18 in the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index and is #14 in the MileHigh Prep Report rankings.  Holyoke is 7-3 overall and have won two games in a row.  Holyoke schedule has been tough and will continue to get harder as the season goes on.  Holyoke has quality wins over Akron, 1A Stratton, and 1A Caliche.  Holyoke has 3 quality losses to 3A Brush, 3A Wray, and 3A Wiggins.  Holyoke will face 1A #2 Cheyenne Wells (6-3) on Friday and #8 Haxtun (5-5) on Saturday.  Holyoke is led by Colby Weber (17.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and Reid Sprague (16.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg).

Center (7-3), Seeding Index #22

Center is ranked #22 in the CHSAA Seeding Selection Index and #16 in the MileHigh Prep Report rankings.  Center is having one of their best starts since 2019 when they went 14-9.  Center sits with a record of 7-3 overall and winners of 4 of their last 5 games.  Center has not played the toughest schedule with their best wins coming over Swallows Charter (5-4), Calhan (2-4), and 1A Centennial (3-4).  Center will see their schedule get much tougher in the following weeks.  Center will play a pair of games this weekend against Trinidad (3-4) on Friday and #10 Fowler (7-2) on Saturday. 

Las Animas (5-3), Seeding Index #23

Las Animas is the final team to mention this week.  Las Animas is #23 in the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index.  Las Animas sits at 5-3 overall and are one of the bigger surprises after losing a good senior class.  Las Animas only three losses are to Kansas teams in the Boarder War.  Las Animas has quality wins over 1A #9 Arickaree and 3A Ellicott.  Las Animas will see their schedule get much tougher going forward.  Las Animas will face Swallows Charter (5-4) tonight and then 1A Evangelical Christian (6-3) on Saturday.  Las Animas has been led by Aaron Vargas (15.3 ppg) and Kree Wallace (13.0 ppg).
