Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Report

As we hit the midpoint of the basketball season, most teams are early on in league play, or have yet to have league matchup but are building momentum to roll through the exhilarating side of the season. This week we look at the top 16 teams in 2A according to the MileHigh Prep Report rankings and examine the wins and losses of this last week as well as the upcoming matchups for each of the teams.

Merino (9-0)

The Rams remain at the top of the rankings with a perfect 9-0 record. This week will be the last week for the team to iron out any wrinkles in their play before they start league play on 1/24 against Haxtun. Merino continued their massive wins over their opponents this last week with wins over Peetz 54-13 and Brush 68-27. The team will end their week on Saturday, 1/18, where they will go on the road to face the 7-0 Stratton Eagles, where the loser will get their first loss of the season.

Simla (6-1)

Simla currently sits 2nd in the overall rankings with only one loss on their records so far, having a current season record of 6-1 and a ranking of 1st in the Black Forrest league with a 1-0 league record. The Cubs this last week got wins over Byers 57-22 and Yuma 48-41. This week of play for Simla will have the team facing Peyton, who is 4-5 on the season, on 1/16 and Hoehne, who is 7-2 so far, on 1/18.

Burlington (4-1)

Burlington currently has a 4-1 record this season. The Cougars got a win for their first game in January against Wray with a score of 54-34. Burlington will be on the road on Friday to face the 5-4 Akron Rams and then the Cougars will be home to host Calhan who is 2-3 on the season, on 1/18.

Rangely (11-0)

Rangely has had a consistent schedule this season and have played some of the most games in 2A. So far the Panthers are 11-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in league play, placing them 1st in the Western Slope league. In their most recent games, Rangely was able to get wins over Hayden 44-31, Soroco 69-8 and Meeker 63-22. The Panthers will play one game this week where they will host the 2-8 Caprock Academy on 1/16.

Sedgwick County (4-3)

The Cougars round out the top 5 teams in 2A. Sedgwick County currently has a 4-3 record, with their losses coming from tough opponents in Fleming, Wiggins, and Merino. To kick off the beginning of January in their first game of 2025, the team got the win over Wray 59-33. The Cougars will be facing another tough opponent this week when they take on Stratton on 1/16, who currently sits at 7-0.

Sanford (10-2)

The Mustangs remain strong this season, currently sitting 6th in the 2A rankings, with a 10-2 overall record and a 1-0 league record ranking them 1st in the Southern Peak League. So far in January, Sanford has won all of their games getting wins over Custer County (63-7), Escalante (51-12), and Buena Vista (51-21). The Mustangs will be taking a break this week and will be resuming play on 1/24 when they will go on the road to face South Park.

Hoehne (7-2)

Hoehne sits 7th in the ranking, 2nd in the Sante Fe League, and are currently 7-2 on the season with a 1-0 league record. The Farmers currently have a split record for January, getting a win against Crowley County 61-22, but fell to McClave 49-53. This week, Hoehne will be looking to add more wins to their record and will face the 2-5 Walsenburg Panthers on 1/17, and then Hoehne will go on the road to face Simla who is currently 6-1.

Akron (5-4)

The Rams are currently 5-4 on the season, with their two most recent games resulting in losses for the team. These games were against Yuma, where Akron fell 36-39, and Stratton where the final score was 44-48. Akron will face 4-1 Burlington on 1/17, 6-4 Wiggins on 1/18 and 7-1 Fleming on 1/21.

West Grand (10-1)

The Mustangs are currently 9th in the rankings with a 10-1 overall record, a 1-0 league record, with the team sitting in 3rd in the Western Slope League. West Grand has played one game so far in January, where they faced Caprock Academy and got the win 54-15. The Mustangs will be looking to keep their rank and add more wins this week as they take on Vail Christian ,who is 2-4 on the season so far, on 1/17, and Plateau Valley, who is 8-2 on 1/18.

Sargent (6-2)

The Famers hit the top 10 spot in the rankings so far this season with a 6-2 overall record. Sargent so far has won both of their games to start the new year, getting wins over Creede (75-17) and Ignacio (56-17). Sargent will be looking to continue their January win streak this week. On 1/16, Sargent will face La Veta who is currently 6-2. Then the famers will take on league rival Center on 1/23 who currently has a 8-2 record.

Del Norte (6-2)

The Tigers are sitting just outside of the top ten 2A teams. Del Norte is 6-2 overall, 1-0 in league play, and are currently 3rd in the Southern Peaks League with a single league game. Del Norte is on a three game win streak in January, getting wins over Ignacio (34-28), Monte Vista (37-34) and Trinidad (35-29). In this next week, Del Norte will host the 3-6 Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds on 1/21.

Dove Creek (7-3)

The Bulldogs have played 10 games so far this season and are sitting with a 7-3 overall record, a 1-0 league record and are 3rd in the San Juan League. Dove creek has played two of these games in January where they have gotten wins in both which were against Ignacio (35-31) and league opponent Mancos (55-23). The Bulldogs will be continuing their league play and looking to find more success as they will play 2-5 Ridgeway at home on 1/18, and then the team will go on the road to face 3-11 Monticello.

Center (8-2)

The Center Vikings are presently 8-2 on the season. 1-0 in league play and are currently sitting in 2nd in the Southern Peaks League. Center has faced Rocky Ford and South Park so far this January and the team was able to get wins in both games, 55-20 and 31-21 respectively. The Vikings will be looking to maintain their success in this next week as they dive deeper into league play and face the 2-4 Trinidad Miners in a road league game on 1/17, host the 3-6 Fowler Grizzlies on 1/18 and then host league rival in the 6-2 Sargent Farmers on 1/23.

Union Colony Prep (5-2)

Union Colony so far this season have a 5-2 overall record, a 2-1 league record and are currently sitting 5th in the Mile High League Rankings. The Timberwolves are 2-1 so far this January, getting wins over Dawson School (67-19) and Clear Creek (60-20), but falling to Flatirons Academy in a league game 66-13. Union Colony will be looking to add more wins to their records and boost their league standings this week as they face two league opponents in the 6-2 Gilpin County Eagles on 1/17 and the 2-6 DCA Eagles on 1/21.

Byers (7-3)

Byers has played three games so far in January, getting a win over Wiggins (42-37) but falling to Simla (57-22) and Denver Christian (61-38). This gives the Bulldogs a 7-3 overall record so far this season and puts them 15 in the rankings. Byers will be looking to get off of their current 2 game losing streak and find some success this week. The team will be facing their 3-5 league opponent Genos-Hugo/Karval in a Byers first league game of the season on 1/17.

Heritage Christian (6-2)

The Heritage Christian Eagles 6-2 overall on the season this far, with 3 of those wins contributing to their 3-0 league record. The Eagles are currently 1st in the Mile High League and 16 in the rankings. The 3 league wins for Heritage Christian have all come in January, with the teams getting wins over DCA 62-25, SkyView Academy 64-13, and Dawson School 81-17. The Eagles will be looking to continue their 3 game win streak this week as they face 0-8 Clear Creek on 1/17 and 5-2 Flatirons on 1/21.
