Class 3A Boys Basketball Weekly Report

We have around 37 days left of the basketball season not including regional and state tournament action.  We will look at the top 10 teams according to MileHigh Prep Report plus look at 6 other teams who are ranked in the top 25 of the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Class 3A is loaded with top teams this year and should make for a fun postseason.

#1 Resurrection Christian (8-0), Seeding Index #4

Resurrection Christian is ranked #1 according to MileHigh Prep Report but #4 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Resurrection Christian is the defending Class 4A State Champions and return plenty of talent to repeat in Class 3A.  Resurrection Christian has played mostly 4A teams this year with key wins over Severance, DSST-Green Valley, Eaton, Fort Lupton, Berthoud, and a 3A win over Frontier Academy.  Resurrection Christian have a brutally tough schedule to end the year, and they will be tested.  Resurrection Christian will face Wray (5-6) tonight, 4A Kent Denver (11-2) on Saturday, and Wiggins (5-5) on Tuesday.  Resurrection Christian is led by Ty Yoder (20.6 ppg, 4.0 apg), Graham Riggs (15.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg), and Egan Koenig (11.0 ppg, 3.4 apg).

#2 Highland (10-0), Seeding Index #1

Highland is the #1 ranked team according to the CHSAA Seeding Index.  They are undefeated this season and also will compete like many of the teams on this list in the Patriot League.  Highland started the year with a weaker schedule but that has changed in their last 6 games.  Highland has key wins over Haxtun, Vail Mountain, Manual, Forge Christian, SkyView Academy, Stargate School, Eaton, and Liberty Common.  Highland will also see their schedule get very tough down the stretch.  Highland has just one game this weekend as they face Platte Valley (3-7) tonight.  Highland is led by Sawyer Morgan (17.9 ppg, 13.2 rpg), Brogan Palmer (12.6 ppg, 8.3 rpg), and Dom Huntington (8.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg).

#3 Forge Christian (10-2), Seeding Index #6

Forge Christian comes into the week ranked #3 in the MHPR ranking and Forge Christian is ranked #6 in the Seeding Index.  Forge Christian sits with a record of 10-2 overall.  Both loses Forge Christian has faced are to top teams with a loss to 5A Montrose (12-2) and #2 Highland.  Forge Christian has also played a tough schedule with key wins over Wiggins, Basalt, Denver Christian, Sterling, and Vanguard.  Forge Christian plays in the Metro League which also features plenty of top 4A teams this year.  Forge Christian next game is on 1/21 when they face Peak to Peak (10-0) who is #2 in 4A.  Forge Christian is led by Owen Hovis (16.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg), Jakan Sederwall (15.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg), and Levi Clark (14.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg).

#4 Strasburg (10-0), Seeding Index #2

Strasburg comes into the week ranked #4 and they moved up two spots this week and are ranked #2 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Strasburg competes in the Patriot League and sits undefeated at 10-0.  Strasburg has also played a tough schedule with key wins over Denver Christian, 2A #1 Simla, 4A Bennett, 4A Sterling, Peyton, Wray, and Wiggins.  Strasburg won’t have a game this weekend but will have a huge clash on 1/21 when they face #10 Windsor Charter (11-0).  Strasburg is led by Tyce Bollers (20.3 ppg, 2.7 apg), Nick Glatfelter (14.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg), and Brody Hopwood (9.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg).

#5 Yuma (7-2), Seeding Index #5

Yuma dropped in the rankings this week from #1 to #5 after falling in 2OT to 2A #1 Simla.  Yuma also competes in the Patriot League and is 7-2 on the season.  Yuma two loses are quality loses to 2A #1 Simla and Sidney NE (9-3).  Yuma has quality wins over Sterling, Wray, Vanguard, 1A #1 McClave, Akron, and #9 Liberty Common.  Yuma has a jam-packed schedule over the next 6 days facing Brush (6-4) on Friday, 4A Eaton (5-4) on Saturday, and on 1/21 they face Platte Valley (3-7).  After that Yuma will hit the main gauntlet of the Patriot League.  Yuma is led by Brody Sheffield (22.3 ppg, 4.1 apg), Jonathan Thomson (13.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg), and Alex Pensado (11.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg).

#6 Centauri (10-0), Seeding Index #7

Centauri comes into the week ranked #6 in the MHPR Rankings and #7 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Centauri has played a mixed bag when comes to scheduling.  Centauri has played plenty of top opponents and as they move into Intermountain League play, things will get tougher as just two teams have under .500 records.  Centauri has quality wins over 2A Dove Creek, #7 Salida, 2A #3 Sanford, 4A Delta, and 5A Montrose.  Centauri will have a case to improve in the rankings and they kick off IML play this weekend against 4A Montezuma-Cortez (8-2) tonight and Bayfield (5-4) on Saturday. 

#7 Salida (7-2), Seeding Index #9

Salida comes into the rankings at #7 and #9 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Salida plays in the 4A/3A Tri-Peaks and will be a contender to win the league title.  Salida is 7-2 on the season with losses to #6 Centauri and 4A #6 Lamar.  Salida has quality wins over 2A #3 Sanford, Peyton, Pagosa Springs, and 4A Woodland Park.  Salida does not have their next game until 1/22 when they face James Irwin (1-5).  Salida schedule won’t get tougher until February where they will be truly tested without big man Kason Westphal who transferred.

#8 Vanguard (7-3), Seeding Index #13

Vanguard comes into the rankings at #8 in the MHPR rankings and #13 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Vanguard has not played the toughest schedule which is a reason why they sit at #13 in the Seeding Index.  Vanguard 3 loses are all quality losses to 4A TCA, #5 Yuma, and #3 Forge Christian.  Vanguard does have quality wins over 2A #6 Bishop Machebeuf and Banning Lewis.  The Tri-Peaks will offer some quality matchups to end the year for Vanguard but this weekend they face James Irwin (1-5) on Saturday.  Vanguard is led by Matty Dessalegn (17.8 ppg, 11.6 rpg), JJ Wetters (15.1 ppg, 6.1 apg), and Lorenzo Bustamante (13.1 ppg, 2.3 spg).

#9 Liberty Common (6-4), Seeding Index #11

Liberty Common comes into the week ranked at #9 in the MHPR rankings and #11 in the Seeding Index.  More than likely Liberty Common will not be ranked next week after starting the year 6-0 they have now dropped four straight games including to Lyons last night 69 to 64.  Things won’t get much easier for Liberty Common playing in the Patriot and they face Frontier Academy (8-4) on 1/21.  Liberty Common four losses are all quality losses to #4 Yuma, 4A Stargate School, #2 Highland, and Lyons.  Liberty Common does not have the most quality wins with their best win coming over 2A Heritage Christian, 2A Loveland Classical, and Estes Park.  Liberty Common is led by Pierce Richardson (15.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg), Grayson Clay (12.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg), and Caiden Castillo (12.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg).

#10 Windsor Charter (11-0), Seeding Index #3

Windsor Charter comes into the week ranked #10 in the MHPR rankings and #3 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Windsor Charter sits at 11-0 overall and will be moving up the rankings next week.  Windsor Charter has played a quality schedule with wins over SkyView Academy, Denver Christian, Coal Ridge, Banning Lewis, 2A #6 Bishop Machebeuf, Golden View Academy, and Wray.  Windsor Charter will see their schedule get much tougher as they head into Patriot League action.  Windsor Charter will face Wiggins (5-5) tonight then have a huge clash with #4 Strasburg on 1/21.  Windsor Charter is led by Andrew Schams (17.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg), Dayton Long (16.2 ppg, 3.0 apg), and Kellen Ball (13.2 ppg, 4.5 apg).

Skyview Academy (6-3), Seeding Index #8

SkyView Academy comes into Friday ranked #8 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  They sit at 6-3 overall and have played a solid schedule so far this season.  SkyView Academy will compete in the 3A/2A/1A Mile High League.  SkyView Academy three loses are quality loses to #10 Windsor Charter, #2 Highland, and 2A #6 Bishop Machebeuf.  SkyView Academy has quality wins over Platte Valley, Peyton, Denver Christan, and Heritage Christian.  SkyView Academy will face Estes Park (5-5) tonight and on 1/21 they face Belleview Christian (4-5).  SkyView Academy is led by Markus Lloyd (13.8 ppg), Isaac Dove (12.8 ppg), and Reagan Lewis (11.9 ppg).

Buena Vista (7-1), Seeding Index #10

Buena Vista comes into Friday ranked #10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  They sit at 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.  Buena Vista competes in the 4A/3A Tri-Peaks League, and their lone loss is to 4A #6 Lamar.  Buena Vista has not played the toughest schedule but has improved as of late.  Buena Vista quality wins are over Florence (6-3), 2A #3 Sanford, and C.S Christian.  Buena Vista plays one game this weekend when they travel to face Monte Vista (5-2) on Saturday.  Buena Vista is led by Kaden Schell (14.6 ppg), Julian Lopez-Olsen (13.7 ppg), and Hudson Wingo (9.6 ppg).

Middle Park (7-2), Seeding Index #12

Middle Park comes into Friday ranked #12 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Middle Park opened the year with a bang playing a tough schedule but have since seen their schedule get much easier.  Middle Park is 7-2 on the season with quality wins over 4A Aspen, 4A DSST-Green Valley, and 4A Steamboat Springs.  Both of Middle Parks losses are quality losses coming to 4A DSST-Montview and 4A Denver West.  Middle Park has played a heavy 4A schedule and that was to prepare for 4A/3A Frontier League play, which is not always top notch.  Middle Park will face Moffat County (2-8) tonight then face Fort Lupton (7-4) on 1/21.  Middle Park is led by Joey Gagnon (19.6 ppg), Weston Wiedel (12.6 ppg), and Luke Paugh (10.6 ppg).

Denver Christian (6-6), Seeding Index #14

Denver Christian comes into Friday ranked #14 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Denver Christian plays in the 3A/4A Metro League which is mostly 4A teams besides them and Forge Christian.  Denver Christian sits at 6-6 on the season and have played a tough schedule so far this year.  They have 6 quality loses to Strasburg, Windsor Charter, 2A #2 Crowley County, SkyView Academy, #3 Forge Christian, and 2A #5 Byers.  They do lack quality wins with their best win coming over C.S Christian and 1A Elbert.  Denver Christian will have one game this weekend on Saturday against Limon (3-3).  Denver Christian is led by Ryan Wind (14.2 ppg), Kaden Moore (10.4 ppg), and Elias Romero (8.5 ppg).

Monte Vista (5-2), Seeding Index #15

Monte Vista comes into Friday ranked #15 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  This is their first season back into Class 3A and back in the IML.  Monte Vista is 5-2 on the season and they will have a very busy 2025.  Monte Vista has not played the toughest schedule so far this season.  Monte Vista has quality losses to 2A #2 Crowley County and 4A University.  Monte Vista has quality wins over Frontier Academy, 4A Elizabeth, and Hoehne.  Monte Vista will face Pagosa Springs (1-8) tonight and Buena Vista (7-1) on Saturday.  Monte Vista is led by Azariah Hurtado (20.7 ppg), Kaden Madrid (9.3 ppg), and Alex Marquez (8.6 ppg).

Banning Lewis (5-3), Seeding Index #16

The final team to mention is Banning Lewis.  Banning Lewis is 5-3 on the season and enter Friday at #16 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  Banning Lewis has played a tough schedule with, and all three losses are quality losses to Roaring Fork, #10 Windsor Charter, and #8 Vanguard.  Banning Lewis has also picked up quality wins over 4A Fort Lupton, 4A Basalt, and 4A Manitou Springs.  Banning Lewis will have a jam-packed 2025 and they will face 4A #6 Lamar on Saturday.  Banning Lewis is led by Matthew Lebron (23.4 ppg), Jordan Jones (11.2 ppg), and Trey Oden (11.0 ppg).
