Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Report

As the season intensifies, teams across the state are battling it out for the top spots, and every week brings us closer to the playoffs. This week we’ll look at the top 16 teams from CHSAA Seeding Index and see their past week’s games and take a look ahead at what’s in store for the upcoming matchups.

Merino

The Merino Rams have not played since our last update, so the team remains at 9-0. In the last game for Merino, the Rams beat Brush 68-27, which is a common score gap between Merino and their opponents. Tonight, the Rams will be looking to continue their dominance as they travel to Haxtun to face the 6-6 Haxtun Bulldogs. The Rams will then Host the 2-7 Limon Badgers on Saturday. Next week on 1/28, the team will be on the road again, this time to take on the current 7-5 Yuma Outlaws.

Rangely

The Panthers also remain perfect on the season so far with a 12-0 overall record, a 3-0 league record, and they currently hold the top spot in the Western Slope league. Last week, Rangely got some sizeable wins over Meeker (63-22) and Caprock Academy (62-8). This week the team will be looking to have the same success and will be hosting Vail Mountain on Friday, and North Park on Saturday. These teams are 2-9 and 2-8 respectively.

Simla

The Cubs have some momentum currently and are on a 5-game winning streak. Simla currently has an 8-1 overall record, are 2-0 in league play and hold the 1st place spot in the Black Forrest League. Last week, the Cubs got wins over Peyton 55-10 and Liberty Tree Academy 84-14. Tonight, Simla will be going to Idalia to play the 7-3 Wolves, then on Saturday they will be hosting the 3-8 Fowler Grizzlies. Next week will kick off for Simla on the road as they take on the 2-7 Limon Badgers.

Sedgwick County

The Cougars are currently 6-3 overall on the season with not league game played up to this point. Sedwick County will use this week as their last week before they hit league play hard and try to take the 1st place spot. Last week the Cougars had two very strong wins, the first over Stratton, 48-33, the other over Caliche, 45-16. The team will be looking for the same success next week as they will host Garden County (5-7) to kick off their week.

Sanford

The Mustangs are currently on a 7-game winning streak after last week, beating Buena Vista 51-21 and Fowler 48-15. Sanford is currently 11-2 on the season, 1-0 in league play and are still sitting 1st in the Southern Peaks League. This week, Sanford will be looking to continue their success and maintain their position in league as they will travel to South Park tonight to take on the 9-2 Burros.

Sargent

Sargent sits at an 8-2 overall record with a 1-0 league record and are 2nd in the Southern Peaks League behind Sanford. The Farmers have had some commanding wins this least week, getting wins over Ignacio 56-17, La Veta 78-37, and Center 39-26. In This week of play, Sargent will be looking to uphold their dominance and will be hosting 5-4 Monte Vista on 1/28.

Center

The Vikings are currently at 10-3 overall and 2-1 in league play after getting wins over Trinidad (42-39) and Fowler (41-28) but falling to Sargent (26-39). This places Center Currently in 4th in the Southern Peaks League. The Vikings will be looking for a bounce back weekend this week and will be hosting league opponent Crested Butte, who is 3-5, tonight and will then travel to Hoehne to take on the 8-2 Farmers tomorrow.

Byers

The Bulldogs currently are 8-3 overall on the season, 1-0 in league play, and are sitting 2nd in the Union Pacific League. Last week, Byers lost to Denver Christian 61-28 but was able to bounce back and get the win over Genoa-Hugo/Karval 36-27. This week, Byers will be looking to work their way up the league ranks and add more wins to their records as they will be hosting 7-1 Flagler tonight in a league game and then travel to Calhan to take on the 4-3 team.

Hoehne

The Farmers are currently at 8-2 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record and are sitting in 2nd in the Santa Fe League. Last week, Hoehne was able to get a commanding win over Walsenburg of 69-12. The Famers will be looking for the same success this week as they will travel to Fowler to face the 3-8 Grizzlies and then the team will host the 10-3 Center Vikings. Next week, Hoehne will be hosting the 5-6 Swink Lions on 1/28 to kick off the week of play.

Heritage Christian

Heritage Christian currently sits in 1st in the Mile High Legue with an 8-2 overall record and a perfect 5-0 league record. In this last week of play, the Eagles were able to get wins over Flatirons Academy 52-32, and Gilpin County 46-17, giving Heritage Christian a 5-game winning streak. This week, the Eagles will be hosting Clear Creek on 1/25, who are 0-10 currently, and then will host the 5-5 Union Colony Prep Timberwolves on 1/28.

Burlington

The Burlington Cougars do not have a lot of games under their belt so far this season but are currently 5-1 overall. Last week, Burlington beat Akron 50-45 and will be looking to extend their win streak this week as they face 3-5 Genoa-Hugo/Karval tonight, then will travel to face the 6-6 Haxtun Bulldogs tomorrow, and then will host the 4-3 Calhan Bulldogs on 1/29.

Del Norte

Del Norte has a 7-2 overall record so far this season, with a 1-0 league record and are 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. This last week the Tigers had success, beating Trinidad 35-29 and Sangre de Cristo 53-11. Del Norte will be looking to extend their success and add to their 4-game win streak this week. The Tigers will host the 4-5 Custer County Bobcats tonight and then will host the 7-4 Pagosa Pirates on 1/28.

Dove Creek

Dove Creek is 9-3 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record and are 2nd in the San Juan League. Last week, the Bulldogs were able to beat Ridgeway 43-29 and Monticello 55-41, extending their win streak to six. The team will be looking to continue their success and will be traveling to Dolores on 1/25 to play the 5-8 Bears. Next week the team will face Nucla on 1/28 who is currently 10-3.

Campion Academy

Campion Academy is currently 7-1 overall on the season after getting a win over Mile High Academy 25-22. The Cougars are on a 7-game winning streak so far and will be looking to extend their streak next week as they will face the 2-6 Dawson School Mustangs on 1/28.

West Grand

The Mustangs got wins this last week over Vail Christian 53-17 and Plateau Valley in a close battle of 25-24. The team then fell in their most recent game against Gilpin County 35-42. This leaves West Grand with a 12-2 overall record, a 3-0 league record and puts them in 2nd in the Western Slope League. The Mustangs will be looking to continue their success this week as they will host their two league opponents this week. The team will take on the 2-8 North Park Wildcats tonight and then will play the 10-3 De Beque Dragons on Saturday.

Akron

The Akron Rams are 7-5 overall on the season, with their first league game being played tonight against the 3-9 Holyoke Dragons. Akron was able to win the last two games played which were against Wiggins (40-32) and Fleming (42-33). The Rams will be looking to extend their win streak this week against Holyoke, and then the team will be getting ready for the rest of the league play next week.
