Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Report

With League play well underway, or just starting to heat up, several teams are starting to make their names known and are trying to secure their spot in the playoffs. This week we will take a closer look at each 2A team ranked 1st in their league, highlight top stat leaders, and see what coming up on the road to the postseason.

Black Forrest League – Simla

Simla this season has gotten wins over Monument Academy (91-4) and Liberty Tree Academy (84-14) this season, giving them a 2-0 record against league opponents and putting them in 1st place so far in the Black Forrest League and 4th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. In the last week of play, the Cubs have gotten victories over Fowler (68-16) and Limon (74-19) to get them an overall record on the season of 10-2. This Saturday will be a tough test for Simla as they will travel to Merino to take on the undefeated 12-0 Rams. Then on 2/4, Simla will travel to Kiowa to take on their 4-7 league opponents, the Indians who are currently 4th in the League.

Stat leaders so far this season for the Cubs are Carlee Cox (So) with 201 points, 40 assists, 74 rebounds, 60 steals and 8 blocks, Katie Gotschall (Jr) who has 135 points, 46 assists, and 42 steals, Kylie Maranville (Sr) who has 129 points, 108 rebounds, and 26 blocks, Kylie Brickwell (Sr) with 32 assists, and 39 steals, and Anna Kerst (Fr) with 3 blocks. 

Union Pacific League – Byers

Byers has league wins over Genoa-Hugo/Karval (36-27) and Flagler (57-45) so far this season to give them a 2-0 league record and an overall record of 10-3, which places them in 6th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Other than getting a win over Flagler, the Bulldogs also got a win over Calhan last week 48-27. Byers will be looking to get their 4th win in a row tonight as they host the 6-6 Arickaree Bison. This Saturday, Byers will have another league game and will host the 8-1 Burlington Cougars, who are currently 2nd in the Union Pacific League and will be looking to take the 1st place spot away from the Bulldogs.

Leading the team this season in stats are Joclynn Rector (Fr) with 119 points, and 18 assists, Madilee Olsen (So) with 108 points, 35 assists, 83 rebounds, and 40 steals, Abi Green (Jr) with 96 points, 58 rebounds, 29 steals, and 3 blocks, Averie Eymann (Sr) with 37 assists, 54 rebounds and 32 steals, and Taiya Eymann (So) with 2 blocks.

West Central League – Custer County

With a win over Cripple Creek-Victor 55-13, the Bobcats are currently in 1st in the West Central League. Custer County is 4-6 on the season and 34th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team will be looking to bounce back this weekend after a loss to Del Norte of 13-54. Custer County will have a league game on Friday against the 10-3 South Park Burros who are currently 2-2 in league play and 2nd in the league. Then on 2/1, the Bobcats will host the 11-4 Center Vikings. Next week, the team will face Pikes Peak Christian on 2/4 who is 2-7 on the season.

Western Slope League – Rangely

Remaining as one of the last undefeated teams so far this season, the Panthers are currently 14-0 overall, 5-0 in league play, 1st in the Western Slope League and 2nd in the CHSAA Seeding Index behind the other undefeated team, Merino. Last week, Rangely got league wins over Vail Mountain 63-15, and North Park 72-22. Friday will be another league game for the Panthers as they travel to play the 9-3 Plateau Valley Cowboys, who are currently 4th in the league, and then they will travel to Rifle to face the 1-14 Bears.

At the top of the stat board for the Panthers are Miah Wren (Sr) with 278 points, 46 assists, 71 steals and 3 blocks, Ashlynn Ducey (Sr) who has 151 points, 74 assists, and 72 steals, Aubriana Tapia (Jr) who has 150 points, 95 rebounds, 39 steals and 6 blocks, Emmeree Wagner (Sr) with 30 assist, Addison Scott (Jr) with 98 rebounds and 6 blocks, and Miley Chism (Sr) with 78 rebounds.

Santa Fe League – Hoehne

Hoehne is 11-2 overall, 4-0 in league play, 1st in the Santa Fe League and 7th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Farmers are on a 4-game winning streak after last week showed success for the teams with them getting wins over league opponent Fowler (59-14), Center (59-38), and League opponent Swink 54-25. The Farmers will take the rest of this week off and then will be looking to continue their success next week as they will host league opponent Rocky Ford on 2/4 who is 3-11 on the season and 5th in the Santa Fe League with a 1-2 record.

Leading the team in their success so far  this season for Hoehne are Braylee Foster (So) with 151 points and 54 rebounds, Kaylah Crosson (Sr) with 136 points, 79 rebounds, and 6 blocks, Alessa Cantoria (Sr) with 108 points, 63 assists, 60 rebounds, and 52 steals, Ellegra Gutierrez (Sr) with 28 assists, 51 steals, and 4 blocks, Phoenix San Roman (Sr) with 23 assists and 36 steals, and Isabella Chacon (Jr) with 2 blocks.

Lower Platte League – Merino

Merino remains the leader of not only the Lower Platte League, but also the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Rams remain perfect on the season with a 12-0 overall record and a 1-0 league record so far. Their lone league win so far this season has been over Haxtun 63-20, and their most recent wins have been over Limon 64-29 and Yuma 48-34. Merino will be looking to continue their dominance in the league and class this week as they will be facing league opponent Caliche on 1/31 who is 6-4 overall and then the Rams will play Simla on 2/1 who is 10-2 so far this season. Next week, games will kick off against 10-2 Fleming where Merino will be on the road.

Southern Peaks League – Sanford

Sanford is currently leading the Southern Peaks League with a 12-2 overall record, a 2-0 league record and are 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Mustangs have wins over league opponents Crested Butte (73-9) and South Park (46-16), which was their most recent game. League play will continue for Sanford this weekend where the Mustangs will host the 5-5 Trinidad Miners on 1/31, and then they will host the 8-3 Sargent Farmers on 2/1 who are 2nd in the league and will be looking to take the lead from Sanford.

Stat leaders for Sanford this season are Shasta Bond (Sr) with 69 points and 33 rebounds, Claire Crowther (So) with 56 points, 11 assists, 29 rebounds, 13 steals, and 1 block, Brooklyn Reynolds (Sr) who has 52 points, 22 assists, 19 steals and 1 block, Avery Koenig (Jr) who has 12 assists, 26 rebounds, and 7 steals, and Bella Peterson (Jr) who has 1 block.

Mile High League – Heritage Christian

With a 7-0 league record and a 10-2 overall record, Heritage Chrisitan is 1st in the Mile High League and rounds out the top 10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Last week, the Eagles got league wins over Union Colony Prep 60-21 and Clear Creek 63-13. This Saturday will be a non-league game for the Eagles as they will host the 9-1 Briggsdale Falcons, and then the team will resume league play on 2/4 against the 10-3 Lyons Lions in a battle for the league title.

Leading the stat board for Heritage Christian is Samantha Snow (Fr) who has 69 points, 33 assists, and 14 blocks, Cadence Smith with 69 points and 24 assists, Staci Brown (Sr) who has 54 points, 20 steals and 7 blocks, Sophia Case (Sr) who has 13 assists, 19 steals, and 12 blocks, Mataya Kraft (Jr) who has 34 rebounds and 17 steals, and Sydney Nichols (Sr) who has 31 rebounds.

Sedgwick County

Although Sedgwick County is not currently ranked in league play, they are sitting 5th in the CHSAA Seeding Index with no league games under their belt. The Cougars are 7-3 overall so far this season and are currently on a 4 game win steak after getting the win over Garden County earlier this week 54-29. Tonight for Sedgwick County will be a road game to Perkins County, who is 7-9 on the season so far. League games will then start for the Cougars on Friday night in a road game against the 8-5 Akron Rams, who currently hold the 2nd place spot in league play with a win over league opponent Holyoke.

Leading the team this season on the stat board are Abigail Dille (Sr) with 135 points, 18 assists, 66 rebounds, and 7 blocks, Lainee Nein (Jr) with 105 points, 19 assists, 66 rebounds, 40 steals and 20 blocks, Keyana Ehnes (Sr) with 74 points, 15 assists, 19 steals and 3 blocks, and Ryen Carlson with 29 rebounds and 25 steals.
