
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Report

February is the last month for regular season play, and the competition is heating up. Each team is fighting for the top positions in their league as well as top places in the CHSAA Seeding Index. This week, we will look at the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index and see how their last week of play was and who they will be facing in the upcoming week of play. There have been a lot of movement in the seeding index, so take a look and see why some teams have moved up and others are fighting to remain in the top group.

Merino
Merino continues with their perfect season after beating Caliche 59-33, Simla 65-43, and Fleming 61-37. This puts Merino at a 15-0 record overall, a 2-0 league record and a 1st place spot in the Lower Platte League. Merino had a perfect season last year and are the current state title defenders, making their last win their 42games won consecutively. The race is on for Merino to maintain their perfect record as they only have a handful of games left on the schedule. The Rams will be facing the 10-3 Sedgwick County Cougars at home on 2/7, who they beat earlier in the year 52-15.
Rangely
Rangely is the second team in 2A who remain undefeated this far into the season. The Panthers are 16-0 overall, 6-0 in league play and are holding onto the 1st place spot in the Western Slope League. Rangely had a very successful week last week, getting wins over Plateau Valley 61-22 and Rifle 60-24. With limited games left on the schedule, the Panthers will be facing Little Snake River who is 8-6 on the season, and then the team will face the 2-7 Vail Christian Saints.
Sanford
The Sanford Mustangs move up to the 3rd spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index after getting wins last week over Trinidad (58-4) and Sargent (46-40). The Mustangs are now 14-2 on the season, with 10 wins consecutively, 4-0 in league play and are 1st in the Southern Peaks League. Sanford is heating up and will be looking to carry this momentum through the rest of the season. Tonight, Sanford will face the 9-6 Monte Vista Pirates and will be looking to get their 11th win in a row.
Sedgwick County
The Cougars are currently on a 7-game winning streak after beating Akron 47-40 and Leyton 61-35. The team is now 10-3 overall on the season, 1-0 in league play, currently sit 2nd in the Lower Platte League and are 4th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Sedgwick County will have a tough match up on 2/7 on the road against the undefeated Merino Rams. The Cougars will be looking to keep their streak alive and give Merino their first loss in two seasons. Then on 2/8, Sedgwick County will host Briggsdale who is 10-2 on the season.
Burlington
Burlington makes their way up to the 5th spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index this week. The Cougars are 11-1 overall on the season, 3-0 in league play and are currently 1st in the Union Pacific League. Burlington is on a 9-game winning streak after beating Flagler 50-38, Byers 74-42, and Goodland 50-42 in the last week of play. The team will be looking to continue their winning streak and add more wins to their record this week as they will take on the 10-4 Idalia Wolves on 2/7, the 3-10 Limon Badgers on 2/8, and the 6-8 Arickaree Bison on 2/11.
Simla
Simla fought a tough battle last weekend against the Merino Rams, but ultimately fell to them 643-65. The Cubs were able to start off this week of play with a big league win over Kiowa 55-25. This puts the Cubs at 11-3 overall, 3-0 in league play and they currently have a hold on the 1st place spot in the Black Forrest League. Simla will face another tough opponent this weekend and will take on the 11-3 Salida Spartans at home and then they will also host the 3-8 TCSS Kodiaks on 2/11.
Heritage Christian
The Eagles are currently 12-2 on the season, 8-0 in league play, are holding the 1st place spot in the Mile High league and are 7th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Heritage Christian was able to get wins last week over Briggsdale 45-43, and Lyons 47-35 to give them a 9-game winning streak. The Eagles will be looking to add another win to their streak and their record this week as they will take on the 5-9 Bishop Machebeuf Buffaloes tonight on the road.
Hoehne
The Hoehne Farmers are their largest winning streak this season at 5 games after beating Rocky Ford earlier this week 60-20. The Farmers are currently 12-2 overall, 5-0 in league play, 1st in the Santa Fe League and 8th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Hoehne will be looking to continue their winning streak tonight as they travel to La Veta to face the 8-5 Redhawks, then on 2/7 the team will host the 8-5 Branson/Kim Mustangs.
Byers
The Bulldogs fell to Burlington last weekend 42-74 in a tough league game. This leaves the team with an 11-4 overall record, a 2-1 league record, puts them 3rd in the Union Pacific League and 9th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Byers will be looking for the bounce back this weekend and into next week as they will kick off this next of play on 2/7 at home to face the 8-6 Akron Rams, the team will then travel to Stratton to play the 11-2 Eagles on 2/8 and then will start next week off at Deer Trail and will take on the 4-8 Eagles.
Sargent
The Farmers are currently 9-4 overall on the season after splitting the week and getting a win over League opponent Del Norte 55-30 but falling to Sanford 40-46. This gives the Farmers a 2-1 league record and puts them in 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. With the team currently rounding out the top 10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Sargent will be looking to add more wins to their record this week and stay inside of the top 10 2A teams. The Farmers will be hosting the South Park Burros on 2/7, who are 11-4 on the season, and then the team will be on the road to play the 8-5 Sierra Grande Panthers on 2/ 8.
Center
Sitting just outside of the top 10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index at number 11 and 2nd in the Southern Peaks League. The Vikings are12-4 overall this far into the season and 3-1 in league play. Center was able to come back from a loss to Hoehne (38-59) and got the win over Custer County to kick off February (46-18). Friday will prove to be a good league matchup game who will be hosting the Del Norte Tigers, who are 9-4 on the season. The Vikings will then travel to Cotopaxi on 2/8 to face the 8-4 Pirates.
Akron
The 8-6 Akron Rams are sitting at 12 in the CHSAA Seeding Indec and are 1-1 in league play with a 3rd place spot in the Lower Platte League. The Rams had their three-game winning streak snapped by Sedgwick County who beat the Rams in a close game of 40-47. Akron will be looking to get some more momentum going for them and will be facing the 7-8 Haxtun Bulldogs tonight at home, who Akron was able to beat 51-40 earlier in the season, and then the team will be traveling to Byers to play the 11-4 Bulldogs.
Campion Academy
Campion Academy ends their scheduled games this week with wins over Denver Jewish Day 48-38 and Front Range Baptist 33-29. The teams end their regular season with a 10-2 record and will now have to wait for a couple of weeks until the other teams finish their regular season to see where their final standings are heading into the postseason.
West Grand
West Grand currently holds the 2nd place spot in the Western Slope League with a 15-2 overall record, a 6-0 league record, and are 14th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team is on a 3-game winning streak after beating North Park 40-21, De Beque 35-33 and Soroco 46-22. The Mustangs will be looking to extend their win streak this week and will be facing Vail Mountain on the road and who is 5-11 overall on the season. A win will also help the Mustangs remain on the top side of their league.
Del Norte
The Tigers are 9-4 overall on the season, 2-1 in league play, 4th in the Southern Peaks League, and are currently sitting at number 15 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Del Norte lost last week against their league opponent Sargent 30-55 but was able to come back and get a league win over Crested Butte 55-21. The Tigers will be looking to another league win this week wo help them move up in The rankings and will be facing 12-4 Center on 2/7 on the road. The Tigers will then host Walsenburg on 2/8 who are 3-14 in a non-league game.
Dove Creek
The Bulldogs crack the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index this week with a 12-4 overall record and a 5-1 league record, putting them 2nd in the San Juan Basin League. Last week Dove Creek was able to get wins over league opponents Telluride 64-25 and Ouray 50-8. With the team in the middle of league play, the Bull Dogs will be taking on another league opponent this weekend in Nucla on the road on 2/8 who are 13-3 on the season.
