Class 2A Wrestling Regional Update by Carlos V

Well fans we are at the last Two weeks of the season. Regionals is upon us. I will talk about regionals later, but want to get a quick recap of last weekend. 

A couple tournaments that happened were: the Valley Classic held in Center. Center won the tournament with 168.5 points followed by Centauri with 151.5. Other tournaments were the  Ed Rusher tournament held in Crowley County. Burlington won the tournament with 208 followed by Limon with 125 and Swink 124.5. Meeker had duals also. In attendance was North Fork, Soroco,and Rangley from 2A. 

Regionals is upon us. Here is what regionals is going to look like.  Posted at the end is the full list of teams but let’s look at each regional.  Remember you must finish fourth in your weight class to qualify for State.

Region 1

Region 1 will be held at Akron HS and will have three top 10 teams in #2 Wray, #7 Sedgwick County/Fleming, and #9 Wiggins.  Region 1 will be very competitive in many weight classes with 106 lbs, 138 lbs, 144 lbs, 157 lbs, 190 lbs, and 285 lbs all having at least 5 ranked wrestling competing.  190lbs will be one of the more intriguing regions with 6 ranked wrestlers including #2 Jorge Mendez of Wiggins and #5 Eric Tracy of Wray.  215lbs is another intriguing weight class with the top 3 wrestlers in the weight class squaring off, they are #1 Tavery Chappell, #2 Anthony Estrada, and #3 Michael Pacheco.

Region 2

Region 2 will be held at Ignacio HS and will have three top 10 teams plus one just outside the rankings.  The ranked teams are #1 Cedaredge, #8 Monte Vista, #10 Meeker, and West Grand is just outside the rankings.  Region 2 has several weight classes with at least four wrestlers ranked and they have four weight classes with 5 or more wrestlers ranked they are 106lbs, 132 lbs, 138 lbs, and 165 lbs.  The 132 lbs weight class is one of the more competitive weight classes with 7 wrestlers ranked.  #2 Ethan Hice, #3 Teagan Larimore, #8 Koy Weber, and #10 Elijah Baumgardner headline that weight class.  Another competitive weight class is 165lbs with 3 of the top 4 ranked wrestlers.  #2 Jacob Pacheco, #3 Lincoln DeKay, and #4 Brandon Vannest headline that weight class.

Region 3

Region 3 will be held at Rocky Ford HS and will have two ranked teams in #3 North Fork and #4 Rocky Ford plus Fowler & Buena Vista who are just outside the rankings.  Region 3 will only have four weight classes with 4 or more ranked wrestlers, but several top wrestlers will be competing.  144 lbs and 285 lbs have 5 or more ranked wrestlers.  113 lbs weight class is one of the more intriguing with #1 Anthony Franco, #2 AJ Jaramillo, and #3 Derreck Buford all poised to square off.  The heavy weight class also will be important with #3 Omar Ocana, #9 Luis Arzaga, and #11 Spencer Uhland competing to reach the state tournament.

Region 4

Region 4 will be held at Walsenburg HS and will have two ranked teams in #5 Highland and #6 Center.  Region 4 will only have three weight classes with 4 or more wrestlers ranked but most weight classes feature at least one top 5 ranked wrestler.  126 lbs, 175 lbs, and 285 lbs are the three classes with four or more ranked wrestlers.  126 lbs has 5 ranked wrestlers with #6 Orion Martinez, #8 Kathir Sasikumar, and #9 Carter Jensen headlining that weight class.  The 285 lbs class also will feature #1 Cody Netherton, #6 Lincoln Tomky, and #10 AJ Bowman.
