
Class 2A Wrestling Regional Recap & State Preview
The time has come we have reached the end of the season and it’s time to lay it all on the line. Regionals gave us our first look at some of the top matchups and we now have the state brackets out and you can see them at the link below:

Regional Recap
Region 1
Region 1 took place at Akron HS. Region 1 was won by Wray HS who scored 258 points followed by Sedgwick County/Fleming with 209 points, and Burlington at 180.5 points. The weight classes we wanted to keep an eye on were 138, 144, 157, 190, 215, and 285. The 144-weight class had one of the bigger surprises as Caden Geanetta of Forge Christian upset both Elijah Martin & Scout Humrich to reach the finals but fell to Scotty Engle of Sedgwick County/Fleming. Martin and Humrich would finish in 3rd & 4th and qualify for state. The final weight class to quickly look at was 190. Mendez came in as the favorite and walked away with the regional crown. The big upset came when Bryan Montes of Yuma upset Eric Tracy of Wray in the Semifinals. Tracy would bounce back and finish in 3rd and Ryan Davis who was also upset by Montes finished in 4th.
Region 2
Region 2 took place at Ignacio HS. Regions 1 & 2 were easily the toughest regions in Class 2A. Cedaredge would be your regional champions with 251 points, followed by Monte Vista with 165 points and Meeker with 133.5 points. We had four weight classes that were very intriguing, and they were 106, 132, 138, and 165. The 132 lbs weight class did see Ethan Hice win the region over Teagan Larimore, by forfeit. Elijah Baumgardner defeated Jacob Avila for 3rd place, and both would qualify for state. The 165 lbs weight class was also a tightly contested one and we would see #3 Lincoln DeKay defeat #2 Jacob Pacheco 7 to 5 in the finals. Drake Jones of Meeker would finish in 3rd with Ryder Weber of Hayden finishing in 4th.
Region 3
Region 3 took place at Otero JC hosted by La Junta HS. North Fork would walk away with the regional title scoring 253 points. Rocky Ford finished in second with 218 points and Buena Vista would finish in 3rd with 163.5 points. 113, 144, and 285 were the main weight classes to keep an eye one. In the 113 lb weight class we saw the top 3 wrestlers all enter this regional. #3 Derreck Buford of Crowley County would defeat both #1 Anthony Franco (2nd place) of Rocky Ford & #2 AJ Jaramillo of Dolores Huerta to win the regional title. AJ Jaramillo would finish in 3rd place defeating Dan Robinson of North Fork who would finish in 4th place. The 285 lb weight class was also a good one battle. Spencer Uhland of County Line would defeat Omar Ocana of Rocky Ford by pin in the regional finals. Adam Zapien of Ellicott would finish in 3rd and Zane Montelongo would upset Valor Long of North Fork to reach the state tournament.
Region 4
Region 4 took place at Walsenburg HS. Highland would enter as the highest ranked team and would win the region scoring 209.5 points followed by Center at 156.5 points and Las Animas at 128.5 points. 126, 175, and 285 were the featured weight classes with possibly 4 or more ranked wrestlers going in. 126 lb weight class had possibly 5 ranked wrestlers enter. Orion Martinez of Las Animas would defeat Carter Jensen of Highland for the regional title. Kathir Sasikumar of Swink would defeat Kyler Spleen of Primero for 3rd place, and both would quality for state. The 285-weight class is the final to mention. Cody Netherton would square off against Lincoln Tomky in the finals with Netherton getting the win by pin of Tomky. Andreas Bowman would get a 2-1 win over Kevin Perez of Highland to finish in 3rd and both would punch their ticket to the state tournament.
State Tournament Preview
The 2025 State Tournament will have some big storylines this year. The biggest storyline of the tournament will be Traven Sharon of Fowler HS looking to complete the four-peat and join the exclusive club of 34 wrestlers who have done the same. Traven Sharon will be wrestling at 126 lbs and has won state titles at 120, 113, and 106. He is just one of the six returning state champions in Class 2A. Austin Collins of Wray HS is another returning state champion. Collins finished in second place his freshman year before winning the state title last year at 126 lbs. Collins will wrestle at 132 lbs this year. Samuel Meisner of Wray HS is also a returning champion. Meisner won the title at 144 last year and will move up to 150 lbs which will be one of the toughest brackets in Class 2A. Another huge storyline will be at the 165 lb weight class as we have a pair of returning state champions on a collision course. Tripp Duvall of Holly HS won the 150 lb title last year and Grant Statz of Sedgwick County/Fleming won the 157 lb title last year and both will be wrestling at 165 lbs this year. One final returning champion is Cade Blunt of Meeker HS. Blunt will be defending his 175 lb title this year as he won the 175 lb title last year. We also have 3 undefeated wrestlers enter the state tournament. Coen Schmidt of Merino enters the state tournament at 46-0 and will be wrestling at 138 lbs. Schmidt finished in 2nd last year and is looking for his first state title. Tavery Chappell of Wray enters the state tournament at 39-0 and is wrestling 215 lbs this year. Chappell wrestled 285 a year ago falling in the State Championship. Paxtin Caruso of Nucla enters at 14-0 this season wrestling 215 lbs. Caruso qualified for state the past two years and is making his third appearance at the State Tournament. Caruso went 1-2 last year and will be looking for his first state title.
We will quickly look at the top 8 teams and who they have qualified for the State Tournament. Regional Champions are in Bold.
