CLASS 2A GIRLS BASKETBALL REPORT
BY: KERRY SHERMAN
Regional basketball is only a few weeks away, and the field of 32 is far from being set. A number of teams are hovering on the bubble, hoping it doesn’t burst. This is a look at the teams ranked 27-37 in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index as of Wednesday afternoon.
#27 TRINIDAD LADY MINERS
For the third time in four games, Trinidad got a win on Tuesday, beating #46 Swallows Charter 47-34. The only loss in the run was a two-pointer to #18 South Park on Saturday. They hosted 3A #51 Dolores Huerta Prep on Wednesday and will welcome #8 Sargent on Saturday. Raton (NM) comes in on Monday.
#28 LIMON LADY BADGERS
Last weekend was rough for the Lady Badgers, who fell to 3A #7 Colorado Springs Christian (83-21) on Friday, and #5 Burlington (77-25) on Saturday. They are 2-11 since opening the season with wins in two of their first three games. Limon goes to #10 Byers on Friday, and hosts #29 Fowler on Saturday.
#29 FOWLER LADY GRIZZLIES
Fowler had lost seven of eight heading into Tuesday’s game with #45 Rocky Ford. The Lady Grizzlies won for the third time in the last 10. Their next four games are on the road, starting with #23 Las Animas, ahead of the trip to Limon on Saturday. Next Tuesday, it’s a trek to #46 Swallow Charter Academy.
#30 UNION COLONY PREP LADY TIMBERWOLVES
The Lady Timberwolves had lost six of eight ahead of Tuesday’s scheduled game at 3A #50 Estes Park, which were canceled due to the weather. That was rescheduled for Wednesday. UCP also has a home game with #42 Bishop Machebeuf on Thursday. The Lady Timberwolves will wrap up Mile High League play next Tuesday against 3A #22 Lyons.
#31 GOLDEN VIEW CLASSICAL ACADEMY LADY SENTINELS
A day after breaking a two-game slide, the Lady Sentinels came up just short of putting a second straight win in the books, falling 30-29 to 1A #30 Denver Jewish Day on Tuesday. They are off until next Wednesday when they host #39 Loveland Classical Academy.
#32 RIDGWAY LADY DEMONS
If the season ended now, Ridgway would be the last team in the bracket. Unlike most of the teams in this portion of the Seeding Index, the Lady Demons have been hot as of late. They had a six-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday in a 40-29 loss to 1A #11 Nucla. Ridgway goes for the season sweep of 1A #53 Ouray and #38 Mancos over the weekend. The first time around, the Lady Demons won those match-ups by 10 and three, respectively.
#33 TWIN PEAKS CLASSICAL ACADEMY TIMBERWOLVES
Wednesday’s 40-31 loss to Loveland Classical was the third straight defeat for the Lady Timberwolves, who had won three in a row prior to this current skid. They host 1A #34 Weldon Valley on Thursday, and go to 1A #50 Rocky Mountain Lutheran next Tuesday.
#34 KIOWA LADY INDIANS
Known for making regional runs in 1A, the first season in 2A has been rough at times for Kiowa. Tuesday’s win against #40 Monument Academy was just the second in the last five games for the Lady Indians. They visit 1A #26 Arickaree/Woodlin on Thursday, host 1A #6 Briggsdale on Saturday, and host #51 Liberty Tree Academy on Tuesday.
#35 SOROCO LADY RAMS
The Lady Rams had won two straight and three of four prior to last Saturday’s six-point loss to 1A #10 De Beque. With that loss, they are just 3-5 since the calendar flipped to 2025. Soroco now has to face #19 Plateau Valley in Western Slope play. That’s their only game until next weekend.
#36 CUSTER COUNTY LADY BOBCATS
As was the case with Soroco, Custer County had won three of its last four before a loss to 3A #40 Florence on Tuesday. They were scheduled to play at #41 Vail Christian on Wednesday, and will travel to Sargent on Friday. Custer County will also host 1A #27 Cotopaxi next Wednesday.
#37 HOLYOKE LADY DRAGONS
Competing in the tough LPAA, which has six members in the top-20 of the Seeding Index in the three smallest classes, Holyoke has struggled to find consistency this season. It doesn’t get any easier for the Lady Dragons, who play their final three regular season against teams in the top-10 of the Index. That starts on Friday at #2 Sedgwick County. Next weekend includes games against #1 Merino and #9 Simla.
