2A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

With the end of the regular season either here or on the horizon for the year, we will take a look at the playoff picture and talk briefly about the top 34 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index. All of these teams discussed have the potential to make it within the top 32 threshold for making the postseason, but some are more comfortable than others. We will look at all of these teams records, league standings and see who teams have ended or will end their regular season.

1. Merino

Merino is 17-1 overall on the season after beating Akron (55-37), Stratton (47-20), and Otis. The Rams are 3-1 in league play, putting them 2nd in the Lower Platte League behind Sedgwick County. Before the playoffs begin, Merino will face Holyoke in their last regular season game on 2/2.

2. Sedgwick County

The Cougars are 14-3 overall on the season and are 3-0 in league play, putting them in 1st in the Lower Platte league after beating Merino 51-44. The team is also on an 11-game winning streak after last week where they were able to get wins over Holyoke 57-17 and Burlington 67-51. Sedgwick County will be looking to make their last game of the regular season a win when they take on the Haxtun Bulldogs on 2/21.

3. Sanford

Sanford currently has a 17-2 overall record, a 6-0 league record and holds the 1st place spot in the Southern Peaks League. The Mustangs are on a 13-game winning streak and will be looking to make it 14 to end the regular season as they will be taking on the Pagosa Pirates on the road on 2/21.

4. Rangely

Rangely still holds onto their perfect record so far this season with a 20-0 overall record, a 9-0 league record, and are 1st in the Western Slope League. In their most recent games, the Panthers beat De Beque 60-28 and West Grand 51-25. The team will be looking to continue their dominate wins and get a perfect record in the regular season as they will take on Grand Valley on 2/22 and Cotopaxi on 2/28 to wrap up the regular season.

5. Burlington

Burlington is 14-3 overall on the season, after getting wins over Stratton 42-39, Arickaree 65-19, but falling to Sedgwick County 51-67. With a 5-0 league record, the Cougars are 1st in the Union Pacific league, and will be looking to end their season with three wins as they will be facing Deer Trail on 2/20, Simla on 2/21 and McClave on 2/22.

6. Simla

Simla is currently 14-4 on the season with a 4-0 league record and is 1st in the Black Forrest League. The Cubs were able to get three big wins last week over ECA 62-55, McClave 64-57 in overtime, and Elbert 76-18. Simla will be looking to get more wins as they will be playing Burlington on 2/21, Holyoke on 2/22, Hoehne on 2/24, and Calhan on 2/28 to end the regular season.

7. Hoehne

Hoehne is 17-2 overall on the season with a 10-game winning streak after beating Sierra Grande 54-11, SCA 61-18, and Del Norte 63-41. The Famers are currently 6-0 in league play and currently hold the 1st place spot in the Santa Fe League. They will be looking to add more wins to their win streak, their overall record, and their league record as they will face Las Animas on 2/21 and Simla 2/24 to end their regular season.

8. Sargent

Sargent is currently in 2nd in the Southern Peaks league with a 4-1 league record and a 14-4 overall record. Last week the Farmers were able to beat Custer County 57-21 and Trinidad 49-31to put them on a five-game winning streak. Sargent will be looking to end their regular season on a win as they will be playing Crested Butte at home on 2/21.

9. Heritage Christian

The Eagles are 16-2 overall this season with a prefect league record of 11-0 and are 1st in the Mile High League. Heritage Christian is currently on a 13-game win streak after beating Loveland Classical 44-21, Front Range Christian 58-10, and Estes Park 67-11. The team will be looking to end their regular season with two more wins as they will face BCHS on 2/20 and Byers on 2/22.

10. Byers

Byers currently sits at number 10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 13-6 overall record, a 4-2 league record and are 3rd in the Union Pacific League. The Bulldogs were able to beat Deer Trail on 56-25 and Limon 59-45 last week and will be looking to continue their success to end the regular season as they will face Heritage Christian on 2/22, Akron on 2/25, and then will be in tournament play on 2/28-3/1.

11. Center

The Vikings are currently 3-3 in league play and hold the 4th spot in the Southern Peaks League behind Sanford, Sargent, and Del Norte. Center is 14-6 overall after finishing their regular season schedule with a loss to Sanford 20-53 but a win over Sierra Grande 37-29. The team will now be waiting for other teams to end their season so they can see who they will face on their postseason journey.

12. West Grand

West Grand is 17-3 overall on the season after getting a win over Hayden 37-32 and falling to Rangely 35-51. The Mustangs are 8-1 in league play and are currently 2nd in the Western Slope League behind Rangely. The team will be looking to wrap up their regular season by getting a couple more wins and will be taking on Hayden in a rematch on 2/22, North Park on 2/25 and Lake County on 2/26.

13. Akron

Akron is 10-8 so far on the season with a 1-3 league record and sit 4th in the Lower Platte League. The Rams face Merino and Wray last week and fell to Merino 37-53 but beat Wray 47-38. Akron will be looking to end their regular season by adding three more wins to their record and will play Caliche on 2/21, Briggsdale on 2/22 and Byers on 2/25.

14. Del Norte

The Tigers are 3rd in the Southern Peaks League behind Sanford and Sargent with a 4-2 league record and a 12-6 overall record. Del Norte ended their regular season with a loss to Sanford 38-61, a win over South Park 29-11 and a loss to Hoehne 41-63. The Tigers are currently 14th in the CHSAA Seeding Index and will now be waiting for the rest of the 2A field to finish their schedules to see who they will face in the postseason.

15. Dove Creek

The Bulldogs are 16-5 overall on the season with an 8-2 league record and are 2nd in the San Juan League behind Nucla. Last week Dove Creek was able to get wins over MCHS 50-39, Dolores 54-15 and Mancos 58-34. The Bulldogs will be looking to wrap up their regular season by adding a couple of league wins to their record and potentially move up in the seeding index as they will take on Ouray on 2/21 and Ridgeway on 2/27.

16. Gilpin County

The Eagles are currently 2nd in the Mile High League behind Heritage Christian with a 10-1 league record and a 15-4 overall record. The team is currently on a 7-game winning streak after getting wins last week over SVA 44-26, Lyons 42-21 and Front Range Christian 56-27. The team will be looking to end their regular season with another win on their record as they will face Dawson School on 2/21 and then they will wait to see who they will be facing to enter the postseason.

17. Campion Academy

The Cougars currently have a 15-5 overall record and are 17th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team had some mixed success last week as they were able to beat Midland Adventist 44-37, Maplewood Academy31-12, Sunnydale Academy 37-29, and Mile High Academy 45-38, fell to Andrews Academy 20-42, and Madison Academy 31-28, and beat Minnetoka Christian 24-23. The team will now wait and see who they will be facing to start the Postseason.

18. Plateau Valley

The Cowboys are 13-5 overall with a 5-3 league record and are 4th in the Western Slope League. Plateau Valley was able to win their games last week over Caprock Academy 65-34, Soroco 43-29 and De Beque 47-38 (Aspen score not reported). The team will be looking to end their regular season with some more wins before the postseason as they will be taking on Nucla on 2/22, Cedaredge on 2/25, and North Park on 3/1.

19. Calhan

Calhan has won their last five games including last weeks games which the Bulldogs were able to wins over LTA 71-26, Crowley County 44-40, TCSS 56-6 and Swink 46-41. This gives Calhan a 12-8 overall record with a 4-0 league record and puts them 2nd in the Black Forrest League. Clahan will be looking to add more wins to their record to wrap up the regular season as they will play Miami-Yoder on 2/21, Simla on 2/28, and North Fork on 3/1.

20. South Park

South Park is 1st in the West Central League with a 4-4 league record and a 12-6 overall record. The team lost their most recent game that they played last week against Del Norte 11-29. They will be looking to rebound and get some wins to end their regular season and will be taking on PPCHS on 2/20 and Crested Butte on 2/22.

21. Haxtun

Haxtun is 8-11 overall on the season with a 2-2 league record and find themselves 3rd in the Lower Platte League. The Bulldogs find themselves in the midst of a losing streak, having lost their last three games against Brush 47-56, Idalia 37-46, and Caliche in overtime 51-58. The team will be looking for a bounce back to end their regular season as they will taking on Sedgwick County on 2/21 and then will face some additional TBA opponents to wrap up the regular season. 

22. Las Animas

The Trojans are 11-8 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record, and are currently 2nd in the Santa Fe League. The team was able to capture two wins last week, beating Granada 37-30 and Fowler 37-20. Las Animas has a couple more games that they will be looking to win to end their regular season which will be against McClave on 2/20 and Hoehne on 2/21.

23. Crowley County

The Charges are currently 9-9 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record and are 3rd in the Santa Fe League. Crowley County was able to beat Walsenburg 59-17 but fell to Calhan 40-44. The team will be looking to add more wins to their record and will be taking on TMLS on 2/21, Fowler on 2/22, and Rye on 2/25.

24. Dayspring Christian Academy

Dayspring Christian has a 9-10 overall record after getting wins last week over Dawson School 66-21 and Clear Creek 72-6. The Eagles are 7-4 in league play and are 4th in the Mile High League. The team will be looking to add more wins to their record and secure their spot in the postseason as they will take on SVA on 2/21 and then will play in end of season tournament play on 2/25, 2/27, and 3/1 to end the regular season.

25. Hayden

Hayden is 8-7 overall on the season, 4-4 in league play and are 5th on the Western Slope League. Last week, Hayden found themselves with two losses against West Grand 32-37and De Beque 23-60. The Tigers will be looking to rebound and end their regular season with wins as they will be facing Caprock Academy on 2/21, West Grand on 2/22 and Soroco on 2/28.

26. Fowler

Fowler sits 5th in the Santa Fe League with a 3-3 league record and a 7-12 overall record. Last week, the team lost to Las Animas 20-37, but was able to get wins over Limon 48-40, and SCA 49-31. The Grizzlies will be looking to add more wins to wrap up the end of the regular season as they will take on Peyton on 2/21 and Crowley County on 2/22 to end the regular season.

27. Trinidad

The Miners are 10-8 overall on the season with a 1-5 league record, are 5th in the Southern Peaks League but still remain in the playoff hunt at number 27 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Trinidad lost to Sargent 31-49 but was able to get the win Raton 34-12. Trinidad will be looking to end their regular season still inside of the top 32 in the seeding index and will be looking to end on a win as they take on Sangre de Cristo on 2/21.

28. Swink

The Lions of Swink are 8-11 overall on the season, 5-2 in league play and are 4th in the Santa Fe League. Swink has some mixed success last week as they fell to Cheyenne Wells 21-41, Beat Rocky Ford in overtime 44-37, and lost to Calhan 41-46. The team will be facing Lake County on 2/21 to end the regular season schedule and will be looking to get the win to keep their place in the seeding index.

29. Union Colony Prep

The Timberwolves are 9-8 overall on the season with a 6-6 league record and are 7th in the Mile High League. Union Colony was able to beat Estes Park 68-36, Bishop Machebeuf 53-24 but lost to Lyons 35-47. The team will be looking to end their season on a win and stay within the playoff bubble as they will play ACANC on 2/20.

30. Limon

The Badgers make it into the top 30 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 4-14 overall record, a 1-4 league record and a 6th place spot in the Union Pacific League. Limon finds themselves on a losing streak, having lost their last four games including the two last week against Byers 45-59 and Fowler 40-48. Limon will be looking to get a couple of wins to end their regular season and will be playing Stratton on 2/21, ECA on 2/22 and Sedgwick County to end their regular season on 2/25.

31. Loveland Classical

Loveland Classical is 12-8 overall on  the season, 6-1 in league play and are 2nd in the Foothills League. The Lions have won their last three games and beat Lotus 56-21, DJDHS 32-26 and Golden View 46-35. The team will be looking to win their last couple of games in the regular season and stay within the playoff bubble as they will face TPCA on 2/21 and a TBA opponent on 2/22.

32. Ridgway

Currently the last team inside of the playoff bubble, Ridgway is 11/7 overall on the season, 6-4 in league play, and 3rd in the San Juan League. The Demons lost to Nucla last week 29-40 but was able to bounce back and beat Mancos 50-38 and Ouray 38-18. The team will be looking to stay in the playoff bubble and get some wins to end their regular season and will be taking on Telluride on 2/25, and Dove Creek on 2/27.

33. Golden View Classical Academy

Golden View is currently the first team on the outside of the playoff bubble with an 11-7 overall record, a 4-3 league record and are 4th in the Foothills league. The team lost their two games last week, getting beat by DJDHS 29-30, and Loveland Classical 35-46. GVCA will be looking to end their regular season with a couple of wins and will be hoping some teams get losses and allows them to fall inside of the playoff cutoffs. The team will play ACA on 2/21, TBA opponent on 2/22 and The Pinnacle on 2/26.

34. Kiowa

Kiowa is currently just outside of the playoff cutoff at 34 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Indians are 8-12 overall on the season with a 302 league record, and are 3rd in the Black Forrest League. Last week, Kiowa beat Monument Academy 40-12, Lost to Arickaree 32-49 and Briggsdale 53-57 and beat LTA 50-18. The team will be looking to end their regular season with wins, giving them every chance to make the postseason as they will be facing Dolores Huerta on 2/20, Flatirons on 2/22 and Pike Peak Christian on 2/24.
