Class 2A Girls Weekly Review and Preview

As we hit the last week of the regular season, some teams are set pretty solid on the seeding index while others are a little less secure. Some teams get to kick back and wait for the postseason while others are hoping for the fall of others to allow them the opportunity to make some noise. This week we look at league leaders and then take a peak at the team just in and barley out of the playoff bubble currently.

Calhan- Black Forest League

Calhan currently is tied for first place in the Black Forest League with an 13-8 overall record, a 4-0 league record, and are ranked 19th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Bulldogs losses this season have been against Ellicott (30-42), Center (37-46), Geno-Hugo/Karval (18-25), Byers (27-48), Peyton (30-49), Burlington (21-61), Thomas MacLaren (35-53) and ECA (26-43). After getting wins over Swink (46-41) and Miami-Yoder (44-22) last week, Calhan is currently on a 5-game winning streak and will be looking to carry that momentum through the end of the regular season as they will be taking on Simla (Tied for First) on 2/28 on the road, and then will return back home to face the Miners of North Fork on 3/1.

Burlington – Union Pacific

The Cougars are 17-4 overall on the season, with their losses coming against Colby (26-47), Idalia (44-48), Sedgwick County (51-67), and McClave (43-54). Burlington has a 7-0 league record and are currently ranked 5th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The teams loss to McClave occurred at the end of last week, but the Cougars were able to bounce back and get a win over Haxtun 62-23. They will be looking to duplicate their success this week as they have a rematch against Sedgwick County and will be looking to get the win over them to end the regular season.

Rangely – Western Slope

Currently sitting at 4th in the CHSAA Seeding Index, the Panthers of Rangely are leading the Western Slope League with a perfect record of 21-0 and a 9-0 league record. The most recent wins for the Panthers were against West Grand 51-35 and Grand Valley 54-15. Rangely will be following suit of several other teams and wrapping up their regular season with a tournament this weekend at ECA, but first they will play Cotopaxi at home on 2/28.

Hoehne – Santa Fe League

The Hoehne farmers are 18-3 overall on the season, 7-0 in league play, are 1st in the Santa Fe League and 7th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Losses for the Farmers this season have been against Sanford 30-39, McCLave 53-49, and their most recent game which was against Simla 40-49. Hoehne will be looking to wrap up the regular season with a win and will be taking on Fowler on 2/28.

Sanford – Southern Peaks League

The Mustangs continue to move their way up the chain and currently find themselves at number 2 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 19-2 overall record, a 6-0 league record, and the leader of the Southern Peaks League. Sanford is on a 15 game winning streak currently after beating Pagosa 58-56 in triple overtime and Trinidad 49-22 in the first round of their end of season tournament. In the next round of the SPL tournament, Sanford defeated Del Norte Tigers last night to advance to the SPL Tournament Championship and they will face #8 Sargent in the Championship matchup.

Heritage Christian – Mile High League

Currently sitting at 9 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, the eagles are leading the Mile High League with a 12-0 league record and a 19-2 overall record. The two losses for Heritage Christian this season was against Wiggins, 17-40, and Akron 26-30. Last week and earlier this week, Heritage Christian was able to beat BCHS 59-14, Byers 35-31, and DCA 59-41, bringing their win streak to 16. The Eagles will be looking to end their regular season with a win streak of 18 as they will face Flatirons on 2/27 and Gilpin County on 3/1.

Sedgwick County – Lower Platte League

Currently sitting behind Merino and Sanford, Sedgwick County is sitting in 3rd of the CHSSA Seeding Index as leaders of the Lower Platte League. The Cougars are16-3 overall and 4-0 in league play. This season, Sedwick County has lost to Fleming 36-39, Wiggins 24-28, and Merino 15-52. The team is currently on a 13 game winning streak after getting wins in their last two games which were over Haxtun 60-28 and Limon 60-26. Sedgwick County will be looking to end their regular season on a win and keep their place in the seeding index as they will play Burlington on 2/28.

28. Trinidad

The Miners lost their most recent fame against Sanford 22-49, but was able to get the win over Sangre De Cristo at the end of last week 47-24. Trinidad is currently 28 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with an 11-9 overall record, a 1-5 league record, and are 5th in the Southern Peaks League. Trinidad is ending their regular season with an SPL Tournament hosted by Sanford and will be facing Sierra Grande on 2/27 and if they win, will advance to play for 5th on Saturday.

29. Limon

Limon currently has an overall record of 4-17, is 1-5 and 6th in the Union Pacific league, and are 29th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Badgers have lost their last 7 games, their most recent ones being against ECA 38-56 and Sedgwick County 26-60. Limon will be fighting to get a win to ensure their spot in the playoffs as they will take on Haxtun on 2/28 to wrap up the regular season.

30. Loveland Classical

The Lions currently hold onto the number 30 spot of the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 13-9 overall record and 2nd place in the Foothills league with a 6-1 league record. Loveland Classical has ended their regular season, with a loss to TPCA 32-24 but a win over GVCA 47-38. The team will be watching this weekend and will be hoping that none of the teams currently sitting behind them don’t jump in front of them in the seeding index.

31. Ridgway

Ridgway is currently on a 3 game winning streak after last week and early this week where they were able to get wins over Ouray 38-18 and Telluride 44-30. The Demons are 12-7 overall on the season with a 7-4 league record and they are currently 3rd on the San Juan League. The Team will be looking to move up the ranks in league and the seeding index to end their regular season as they will be playing Dove Creek on 2/27 to wrap things up before playoffs.

32. Union Colony Prep

Sitting as the last team in currently at 32, Union Colony Prep holds this spot with 9-10 overall record, and sits 7th in the Mile High League with a 6-6 league record. The team has lost their last three games against Lyons 35-47, ACANC 30-52, and SkyView 47-50 but will be looking to improve their record, end the regular season with a couple of wins, and hope they stay inside of the playoff bubble as they will have a rematch against Lyons on 2/27 and then will play Bishop Machebeuf on 3/1.

33. Kiowa

Kiowa currently is on the outside looking in the playoff bubble at number 33 of the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Indians are 10-13 overall, 4-2 in league games, and are 3rd in the Black Forrest League. In the last week of play, Kiowa went 2-1, getting wins over Dolores Huerta 49-5 and Pikes Peak Christian 50-30 but fell Flatirons 18-54. The Indians are done playing for the regular season and will have to wait and see if any of the teams fall behind them, allowing the team a chance to make a run in the playoffs.

34. Twin Peaks Classical Academy

Twin Peaks is currently 12-8 overall on the season with a 5-2 league record, are 3rd in the Foothills league and are sitting at 34 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The Timberwolves have won their last three games played, beating Rocky Mountain Lutheran 39-21, Aurora West College Prep 40-26 and Loveland Classical 34-32. The team will be looking to keep their momentum rolling and will be taking on Addenbrooke Classical on 2/28 to end the season. The team will need to win this game and then hope other teams shift, giving them a shot to make it to the playoffs.

35. Golden View Classical Academy

The Sentinels are currently not in the playoffs, sitting at 35 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Golden View has gone 12-9 overall, 4-3 in league and secured the 4th place spot in the Foothills league. After a 4-game loss, the team was able to end their regular season on a win, beating the Pinnacle 40-31 to end the regular season. Right now the team will be hoping for major upsets and a lot of shifting if they want to make it to the playoffs.
