Class 2A Girls Basketball Regional Predictions
Regionals are here and it’s win or go home time. Reaching Regionals is one of many steps for teams looking to reach the State Championship. To reach the state tournament is simple. Win your Region and you will go to the State Tournament. 8 regions and 8 teams advance to the State Tournament. Remember this is just my opinion and we are not cheering against any team. We know all the hard work that each team has put in to reach this point. Good Luck to all 32 teams!
Region 1 at Merino
#1 Merino over #32 Kiowa
#17 Calhan over #16 Plateau Valley
I think the #16 vs #17 game will be a good one. Two teams looking to take their shot at the #1 team in the state. I don’t see Merino being upset in the first round.
#1 Merino over #17 Calhan
Merino is my pick to win this regional. Merino has a ton of post season experience and regardless of who they play will be the favorite.
Region 2 at Sargent
#8 Sargent over #25 Crowley County
#9 Heritage Christian over #24 Fowler
Both higher seeds will be favored in their matchups. Crowley County and Fowler both have plenty of post season experience and will be looking to pull upsets. Sargent ended the season strong, but Heritage Christian was upset in their final game of the season.
#8 Sargent over #9 Heritage Christian
Sargent will have to avoid foul trouble to advance to the state tournament. Heritage Christian has proven that they can beat the top teams but will have avoid the lapse they had in their final game. This could be the best game of the regional finals!
Region 3 at Burlington
#5 Burlington over #28 Swink
#12 West Grand over #21 Las Animas
Burlington will be heavily favored in the opening round but cannot overlook Swink. West Grand vs Las Animas is going to be a great matchup! Both teams have state tournament aspirations, and I think matchup extremely well in the opening round.
#5 Burlington over #12 West Grand
Burlington has the state tournament experience and I think makes a huge difference. Also, the home court advantage for Burlington will be huge especially if they have their pep band going. West Grand would be looking for their best win of the season.
Region 4 at Rangely
#4 Rangely over #29 Ridgway
#13 Akron over #20 South Park
Both higher seed teams will be favored in their matchups. Rangely has played consistently all season plus have state tournament experience. Akron is a very young team but have played against top competition. I don’t see either higher-seed being upset.
#4 Rangely over #13 Akron
Last season this was the big upset as the #13 defeated the #4. I also believe this is one of the best matchups in the regional finals. Akron played a very tough schedule and Rangely has not played the toughest schedule. I do think Rangely advances due to their state tournament experience, but I have Rangely on upset alert.
Region 5 at Sanford
#2 Sanford over #31 Holyoke
#15 Gilpin County over #18 Dove Creek
Gilpin County vs Dove Creek will be one of the best opening round matchups. Gilpin County is coming off their best win of the season and Dove Creek has a ton of state tournament experience but moved up from Class 1A. I will be excited to watch this game on Friday Night.
#2 Sanford over #15 Gilpin County
Sanford is playing their best basketball of the season and it showed with a 3OT win over 4A Pagosa Springs plus quality wins over Del Norte and Sargent to end the year. Gilpin County has shocked teams already this year with quality wins over West Grand and Heritage Christian. Should be a good matchup.
Region 6 at Hoehne
#7 Hoehne over #26 Trinidad
#10 Center over #23 Dayspring Christian
Center vs Dayspring Christian does have me intrigued. Dayspring Christian is very young but how will they handle the experience and size of the Vikings. Hoehne will at least be tested early against Trinidad but look for them to cruise.
#7 Hoehne over #10 Center
For Center to pull the upset they will have to play their best game of the season. These two teams have met each other before so they will be familiar with each other. I think this could be a great matchup and I am giving the edge to Hoehne due to their state tournament experience.
Region 7 at Simla
#6 Simla over #27 Loveland Classical
#11 Byers over #22 Hayden
Byers vs Hayden should be a good matchup. Hayden did play West Grand tough this season, but I think for Hayden to pull the upset will need their best performance of the season. Byers did end the year losing 3 of their last 4 games but their win over Akron does show they can hang with the top teams.
#6 Simla over #11 Byers
This would be the second matchup of the season between Simla and Byers. Simla defeated Byers by 20+ points in the first meeting but expect a much closer matchup this time around. I still believe Simla is a top team in Class 2A, and I would not want to see them on their side of the bracket.
Region 8 at Sedgwick County
#3 Sedgwick County over #30 Limon
#14 Del Norte over #19 Haxtun
Del Norte vs Haxtun has the potential to be the best game of the opening round. Both teams ended the year with a loss and are looking to bounce back. I do think Del Norte has enough defense to defeat Haxtun, but I am expecting a great game.
#3 Sedgwick County over #14 Del Norte
Sedgwick County missed the state tournament last year and look for them to get back to Blue Arena this year. Sedgwick County will have to play against a stingy defensive team in Del Norte if they meet up but look for Sedgwick County to advance.
