CLASS 1A BASEBALL REPORT – WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY
BY: KERRY SHERMAN
With the weather finally cooperating, more teams are able to get their games played, leading to more data for the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index. After a very busy Tuesday, a little schedule is on tap for Wednesday and Thursday. All rankings in the report come from Wednesday morning’s release of the Index.

WEDNESDAY
Caliche (#15) takes a two-game winning streak into its match-up with 2A #14 Highland on Wednesday. The Buffs followed a pair of losses, including a 17-7 defeat by #3 Flatirons Academy, by pounding out wins over Wiley (12-2) and Briggsdale (19-1). In the latter, Peter Brekel and Zander Yost had three RBI apiece. Brekel added three stolen bases.
Highland had a two-game winning streak snapped on Monday, as the Huskies were defeated by 2A #1 Dayspring Christian, 6-5. Highland gave up four in the top of the first, but rallied back to take a 5-4 lead into the fourth. That’s when the Eagles regained the lead that they would not relinquish. Four errors led to five of the six runs being unearned.
Eighteenth-ranked Sargent puts its four-game winning streak on the line at 2A Buena Vista. The Farmers have not lost since dropping their season opener to Centauri. They were scheduled for a doubleheader against South Park last Tuesday, but the games were not played. This contest will be the first action for Sargent in close to two weeks.
Buena Vista broke a three-game losing streak in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against rival Salida, but the Demons could not pull off the sweep. They won the opener 8-7 in walk-off fashion, but lost the nightcap 5-3. Knox Reid had two doubles and 4 RBI in the first game, and Oakley Robison added three hits and three RBI. Trey Cardwell collected two RBI in game two.
THURSDAY
Second-ranked Akron lost the opener of last Saturday’s doubleheader to #5 Merino in a walk-off, 5-4, and then responded by winning the second game 11-6, and adding an 8-4 win over 2A #16 Wray on Tuesday. The Rams will host 2A #31 Wiggins in an LPAA clash on Thursday, needing a win to keep the pressure on #22 Prairie, who leads the District 5 standings by a game. Jax Kusel picked up his fourth win in the game against Wray.
After dropping the first three games of the season, Wiggins ripped off a four-game winning streak. The Tigers have since dropped their last two, scoring a single run in each. They were held to two hits in a 4-1 loss to Jefferson Academy last Saturday. Marcus Steinbar and Kaleb Hull each recorded a single.
The aforementioned Prairie Mustangs will tangle with #19 Peetz in a doubleheader between district foes. The Mustangs hold a two-game lead over the Bulldogs in the standings, but will be on the road for the DH. Prairie just swept a doubleheader against Peetz on Tuesday, winning 3-2 and 10-7. The Mustangs scored two in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off game one. They scored six in the seventh of game two.
For Peetz, those losses came on the heels of a sweep of Front Range Baptist last Saturday. After being held to two hits in the first game against Prairie, the Bulldogs rapped out 13 in the nightcap, three apiece by Jaxon White and Conner Schumacher. Logan Vallier contributed four of the team’s 11 stolen bases.
Flatirons Academy had its eight-game winning streak to begin the season snapped by Dawson School (2A #33) 7-3 on Tuesday. The Bison tied the game at 3-all in the top of the fifth, but surrendered four runs over the next two, including three in the sixth. Flatirons drew nine walks in the loss, but also gave up seven. Six of those were by Parker Wilson, who also punched out 10.
Lyons (2A #21) has dropped five of its last six ahead of the meeting with Flatirons. That includes a 17-9 defeat by The Academy on Monday. Seven different Lions recorded an RBI, and three scored more than a run. Jake LaCrosse, Zack LaCrosse, and Kaion Kishiyama all scored twice.
Ninth-ranked Stratton had three games impacted by the weather last week and only got an 18-3 victory over Manzanola in the book. The Eagles hosted #12 Holly for two on Tuesday and lost both, 9-1 and 11-6. The Eagles committed seven errors in the first game, and only had two hits. Grady Steerman collected a double, and Brody Webb had a single.
The Eagles will host 2A #5 Limon in the Union Pacific, with the Badgers riding a seven-game winning streak. Brody Scherrer held Colorado Springs Christian to just two hits in a 10-0 shutout on Tuesday. Both hits were singles. Scherrer registered nine strikeouts. Logan Haflich went 3-3 with three runs and four stolen bases.
