CLASS 1A BASEBALL REPORT – FRIDAY/SATURDAY

The weekend brings with it some nice match-ups across the state. Our focus is on games involving teams ranked in the top-12 of Friday morning’s CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY

#3 Akron at #17 Caliche (DH)

Akron ran its winning streak to three games with a 14-5 win over 2A Wiggins on Thursday. Alex Bowin went 2-3 with a home run and four RBI, backing Anderson Filla, who got the win despite allowing five unearned runs in four innings. Tucker Stahn recorded seven strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Caliche was three-hit its last time out by 2A Highland on Wednesday. Mason Hernandez, Colton Cochran, and Avery Bell each had a single for the Buffs in the 13-0 defeat.

#8 McClave at #9 Holly (DH)

McClave split a doubleheaders with #11 Cheyenne Wells on Tuesday, dropping the district contest 7-3 in the opener. The Cards bounced back with a 10-4 win in the nightcap. Lawton Annen and Ryan Steinbrunn both had a double and two RBI in game two. Drew Howe swiped four bases.

Holly swept #13 Stratton in a doubleheader on Tuesday, winning 9-1 and 11-6. Edson Noriega had one of the five doubles hit by the Wildcats, and drove home three runs in the opening win. Truman King got the win, striking out 13 in five innings. Game two saw King use his bat to impact the game, going deep and driving in three runs.

#10 La Veta vs #18 Sierra Grande (DH)

Logan Cortez had a double for La Veta’s only hit in a 6-2 loss to 2A Swink on Monday. Logan Tenorio and Lukas Ozzello each scored a run. Tenorio also struck out seven in three innings of work.

Sierra Grande suffered its first loss of the season at #27 Manzanola on Tuesday, 11-6. Kobe Mizokami doubled home half of the Panthers’ runs in the defeat. He and Luis Roybal each recorded seven strikeouts in three innings.

#11 Cheyenne Wells at #13 Stratton (DH)

Cheyenne Wells ran wild on the base paths in the 7-3 win over McClave, stealing 10 bases. Marcus Bogenhagen, Brennan Framel, Trey Scheler, and Mason Marriott had two apiece. Framel added two RBI and two runs scored.

Stratton saw its losing streak reach three after the Eagles fell to 2A Limon 12-0 on Thursday. Brody Webb had a double, while Nolan Notter and Keegan Isenbart each had a single to account for the team’s three hits. Wildness played a big role in the loss, as the Eagles walked seven, hit five, and committed four errors.

SATURDAY

#1 Haxtun at #4 Flatirons Academy

The Fightin’ Bulldogs split a doubleheader with 2A Yuma on Tuesday, dropping the opener 6-2 and then collecting an 8-6 win in game two. Kanin Koberstein delivered a big blow in the win, smacking his first career homer and driving in two runs. Chase Goddard and Coleman Firme also had two RBI apiece.

After having their eight-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday the Bison responded with a 9-0 win over 2A Lyon on Thursday. Noah Evans doubled and tripled, and scored two runs. Mateo Pope got the win on the hill and also stole two bases.

#2 Eads, #12 Evangel Christian, 3A Harrison (TRI)

Eads remained unbeaten on the season with a pair of shutout victories over Wiley on Tuesday. Case Nelson tossed a no-hitter in the opener, which was won by the Eagles 7-0. Nelson struck out 10 in five innings, and added two RBI for good measure. Adyn Hough nearly added a second no-no in the nightcap, allowing one hit and punching out 13 in his five innings. Eads had 14 stolen bases in game two, three by Shaine Winder.

Evangel Christian suffered a 7-5 loss on Tuesday against Front Range Christian, despite three hits and two RBI apiece from Levi Alexander and Nate Lucia. Both had a double and Alexander also collected a triple. Zachary Blair added a double and four stolen bases.

Harrison dropped its sixth straight on Thursday, a 14-1 defeat at home by Coronado. That was the back end of a home-and-home, which the Cougars also won on Tuesday.

#5 Merino vs #6 Otis

Merino pounded out two lopsided wins on Tuesday over Holyoke, with the Rams going 21-1 and 16-0 in the doubleheader. Caleb Deines had a pair of doubles and four RBI in game one, while Zavier Trenkle stole four bases. Trenkle legged out two triples in the second game, and drove in three runs. Josiah Mackintosh also notched three RBI in the win. Coen Schmidt tacked on four stolen bases.

Otis stopped a two-game slide by thumping Weldon Valley 21-1 on Tuesday. The Bulldogs scored 17 runs in the first inning. Paxton Davis drove home five runs, and Gavin Price added four RBI. Price also had three of the team’s 10 stolen bases.
