
CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – FRIDAY/SATURDAY

Some areas of the state will see temperatures in the 90s this weekend, and the action on the diamond could be just as hot. We highlight the match-ups involving teams ranked in the top-12 of Friday morning’s CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY
#1 Dayspring Christian vs #24 Byers
The Eagles ran their winning streak to seven with Wednesday’s 10-0 victory over #14 SkyView Academy. Logan VanIddekinge gave up two hits and struck out a dozen, and Dayspring Christian got two RBI apiece from Owen Steward, Gage Davis, and Josiah Rodriguez. Rodriguez went 4-4 on the day.
Byers dropped its fourth straight on Thursday, falling to #7 Peyton 15-7. Jack Earl went 3-4 with three singles, and he stole his 15th base of the season.
#2 Fowler at #32 Rye (DH)
Joe Salvo and Isaiah Montoya combined on a two-hit shutout of Calhan on Tuesday, as Fowler won 10-0 for its fourth straight victory. Salvo gave up a hit and struck out six in four innings, while Montoya finished it up with two strikeouts and a hit in one frame. Brock True and Weston Johnson each had a home run and two RBI.
Rye dropped a 9-1 decision to Peyton on Tuesday, marking the fourth straight loss for the Thunderbolts. Jackson Bjorum and Branson Burbidge each had a single to account for the team’s two hits. Wyatt Scheid drove in their only run.
SATURDAY
#3 Denver Christian vs #6 Forge Christian
Denver Christian picked up its fourth straight win, beating Jefferson Academy on the road on Thursday as the back end of a home-and-home with the Jaguars. The Thunder got five hitless innings from James Lord, who struck out eight to earn the win. Mason Reilly, Nolan Epperhart, and Trey Speir each had an RBI.
The Fury swept a home-and-home with Kent Denver, completing the feat with a 10-0 win on Thursday on the road. Jonathan Tipton tossed a complete game three-hitter for Forge Christian. Asher Garner provided plenty of run support with three RBI in the game.
#4 Yuma vs #9 Platte Valley
The Outlaws split their doubleheader with 1A #1 Haxtun on Tuesday, winning the opener 6-2 and falling 8-6 in the nightcap. Reyli Trejo drove in three runs to support Silas Baucke in the win. Baucke gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and six walks in six inning. He also notched seven strikeouts. Jesus Rodriguez collected a pair of RBI in the game two loss.
Jackson Gentry, Hazen Weber, Logan Hackett, and Jeremiah Molinar each had two RBI for Platte Valley in a 12-2 win over Strasburg on Thursday, giving the Broncos their second straight win. Weber got the complete game victory, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits in six innings. He walked five and punched out 10.
#5 Limon vs #16 Estes Park (DH)
Aiden Kollath and Brooks Scherrer were sharp on Thursday, as the duo combined on a three-hit shutout of 1A Stratton. The 12-0 win was the third straight shutout for the Badgers, who stole 17 bases in the game. Scherrer swiped five of them. Kollath not only starred on the mound, but he also brought in three runs with the bat.
Estes Park hammered out a 13-1 win over Denver Academy on Thursday, putting a second straight win on the board for the Bobcats. Cole Ingram tripled and drove in two runs, while Zec Moss scored three times. Moss and Graham Stafford combined to hold the Mustangs to two hits.
#7 Peyton vs 1A #7 Simla
Peyton racked up 15 runs on 14 hits in the win over Byers on Thursday. The Panthers also benefited from four Bulldog errors, resulting in five unearned runs.
Simla pushed its unbeaten streak to four with a doubleheader sweep of Elbert on Thursday. The Cubs stole 20 bases in a 16-1 opening win. Wyatt Stanko took four, while TJ Eurich, Caston Cox, and Logan Rayfield added three apiece. Rayfield picked up three RBI in the 11-0 nightcap.
#8 Monte Vista vs #49 Center (DH)
Monte Vista had a three-game winning streak snapped by 3A #19 Alamosa on Tuesday, dropping the game 7-1. The Pirates were held to just four hits in the loss.
Center has struggled mightily since winning its season opener. The 20-8 loss to #28 Rocky Ford on Tuesday was the seventh straight for the Vikings. Ivan Guaderrama racked up three RBI in the defeat.
#12 Cedaredge vs #36 Rangely
The Bruins rolled to a seventh straight win, blanking Grand Valley 10-0 on Thursday. Colton Hutto struck out 11 in the six inning no-hitter. Brady Cooper went 3-4 with three stolen bases.
Thursday saw Rangely suffer its third consecutive defeat, as the Panthers were handled by Olathe 19-7. Marcos Quintana had a double and triple, and drove in four. Landon Bollinger and Landon Carlson scored two runs apiece. The Panthers committed eight errors, leading to 14 unearned runs.
