CLASS 1A BASEBALL REPORT – WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY

The days leading into the final weekend of the regular season don’t have a ton of big match-ups, but there are a couple. The rankings are from Wednesday afternoon’s release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

WEDNESDAY

#12 LA VETA VS 2A #5 PEYTON

La Veta dominated Centennial on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 23-3 and 22-0. Logan Tenorio went 3-4 with a double, three RBI, and three runs in game one. Matthew Gonzales also had three RBI. Gonzales worked three scoreless innings in game two, earning the win. He struck out seven and walked two. Logan Cortez hit for the cycle and drove in four runs.

Peyton has not played since running its winning streak to five last Thursday. The Panthers beat Colorado Springs Christian 12-2, with Zayden Ebbert going 3-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Bryce Compton took the win with two runs allowed over 2.1 innings. Trenten Compton allowed two hits in 2.2 innings.

THURSDAY

#1 HAXTUN AT 2A #18 WIGGINS

The Fightin’ Bulldogs are coming off a split with #2 Akron last Thursday, with Haxtun winning the opener 5-4, and losing the nightcap 13-3. Kanin Koberstein allowed three runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings to get the win in game one, and Colin Cone got the final out of the contest to earn the save. Kash Workman and Madden Larsen had an RBI apiece in the loss.

Wiggins got its own DH split last Thursday, losing the first game against 2A #4 Yuma by a 12-11 score in a game that saw the Tigers blow a 6-2 lead. Arath Carrazco tripled and drove in three in that defeat. He followed that up with three more RBI in the 13-8 game two victory.

#2 AKRON VS 2A #7 LIMON

Akron has not played since the DH split with Haxtun, and the Rams come into Thursday’s game having won seven of their last eight. Kolten Randel went 2-2 with two RBI in the nightcap victory. Caleb Poss stole three bases in that contest.

Limon’s last outing was an 11-4 loss at Burlington last Tuesday. It was the first loss by the Badgers in the series in exactly six years. Brody Scherrer got roughed up for 10 runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings. He struck out eight, but also allowed four walks and hit a batter. Braxten Churchwell doubled and collected an RBI.

#6 OTIS VS #7 SIMLA

Otis has won three straight, including a DH sweep of Wiley last Thursday. The Bulldogs got four RBI from Tayte Smith in a 19-1 game one victory. Gavin Price allowed two hit in three scoreless innings, striking out eight to get the win. Mitchell Stivers collected four RBI in game two, and Austin Hornung added three more.

Simla pushed its winning streak to four with a 10-2 decision over #11 Evangel Christian Academy on Tuesday. The Cubs got two RBI apiece from Treven Kochera, T.J. Eurich, Tatum Kochera, and Teague Jones. Eurich went six innings, striking out a dozen, and allowing two runs (one earned).
