CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY

The better portion of the late week schedule has several top 2A teams tangling with highly-ranked 1A foes. Here’s a quick look at some of the top match-ups for Wednesday and Thursday. All rankings are from Wednesday afternoon’s CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

WEDNESDAY

1A #12 LA VETA VS #5 PEYTON

Peyton has not played since running its winning streak to five last Thursday. The Panthers beat Colorado Springs Christian 12-2, with Zayden Ebbert going 3-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Liam Stewart also recorded two RBI and two runs scored. Bryce Compton took the win with two runs allowed over 2.1 innings. Trenten Compton allowed two hits in 2.2 innings.

La Veta dominated Centennial on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 23-3 and 22-0. Logan Tenorio went 3-4 with a double, three RBI, and three runs in game one. Matthew Gonzales also had three RBI. Gonzales worked three scoreless innings in game two, earning the win. He struck out seven and walked two. Logan Cortez hit for the cycle and drove in four runs.

THURSDAY

#2 DAYSPRING CHRISTIAN VS CLEAR CREEK

Gage Davis threw a five inning no-hitter, allowing two walks and striking out nine, as Dayspring Christian beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran 13-0 on Tuesday. Logan VanIddekinge doubled and drove in three runs to support Davis’ effort. Davis helped his own cause with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Anthony Zacharias went 3-3 and scored three times on Monday, but Clear Creek fell to #15 SkyView Academy 9-5. He was the lone Gold Digger with multiple hits, one of which was a triple. Three errors led to three unearned runs.

#6 DENVER CHRISTIAN AT 3A #12 PEAK TO PEAK

Denver Christian dropped the front end of a home-and-home with Peak to Peak, falling 6-1 at home on Tuesday. James Lord doubled in the bottom of the seventh and was driven home by Tanner McCoy for the only run scored by the Thunder.

Dane Hirt and Owen Branscum had three hits apiece, with three doubles between them. Both scored three runs. Jacob Strong drove in two. Cooper Campbell got the complete game victory, allowing one earned run on three hits and five walks in seven innings. He hit one and struck out eight.

1A #2 AKRON VS #7 LIMON

Limon’s last outing was an 11-4 loss at Burlington last Tuesday. It was the first loss by the Badgers in the series in exactly six years. Brody Scherrer got roughed up for 10 runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings. He struck out eight, but also allowed four walks and hit a batter. Braxten Churchwell doubled and collected an RBI. Liam Yoder swiped three bags, and Logan Haflich stole two.

Akron has not played since splitting a DH with Haxtun last Thursday, and the Rams go into Thursday’s game having won seven of their last eight. Kolten Randel went 2-2 with two RBI in the 13-3 nightcap victory. Caleb Poss stole three bases in that contest. Poss stole four in the 5-4 opening loss.

#17 LYONS VS #15 SKYVIEW ACADEMY

Lyons enters this key Mile High league match-up off a tough 5-3 loss to 3A Brush on Tuesday. Six errors led to three unearned runs in the defeat. Kaion Kishiyama scored twice, while Jake LaCrosse and Leo Irvin recorded two hits each, with a double apiece. LaCrosse stole two bases.

SkyView Academy outlasted Colorado Springs Christian 12-8 on Tuesday, racking up 13 hits, three by Isaac Dove. Dove scored five times and stole seven bases. Chris Gallegos, Clay Cosart, and Kaden Morrison each swiped two.
