CLASS 1A BASEBALL REPORT – WEEKEND

With the regular season ending early next week, we take a look at the games involving teams on and around the bubble as districts approach. Per the CHSAA bulletin, districts with at least five teams will automatically qualify their top two finishers, while any district with fewer than five teams only get their champion guaranteed. The remaining spots will be filled according to the Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY

#20 ELBERT AT #13 CHEYENNE WELLS (DH)

Elbert has won three straight heading into this doubleheader, including a 14-8 victory over Custer County on Thursday. The Bulldogs trailed 7-5 entering the bottom of the fifth, but took control with a seven-spot. Grant Smith went 3-5 with five RBI, while Steven Smith struck out 11 in five innings to get the win.

Trey Scheler, Marcus Bogenhagen, Mason Marriott, and Kelby Leonard all had a double and two RBI for the Tigers in their 14-2 win at Manzanola on Wednesday. Bogenhagen, Marriott, Treven Smith, Brennan Framel, and Ethen Garay recorded two stolen bases apiece.

#25 CUSTER COUNTY AT #15 LA VETA (DH)

The loss to Elbert snapped a five-game winning streak for Custer County. Taylor Bradford went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBI in that defeat. Jacob Evert added a pair of RBI for the Bobcats.

La Veta saw a three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday as 2A #4 Peyton grabbed a 12-7 victory. The Redhawks gave up five runs in the top of the seventh, breaking a 7-all tie. They had scored five in the sixth to create the tie. Lukas Ozzello, Logan Cortez, and Logan Tenorio had two RBI each.

#16 KIOWA VS #33 WELDON VALLEY

Kiowa is 3-2 in the last five, with a 19-4 victory over South Park on Wednesday. Rowan Golden drove home four runs and JD Brewer scored four times. Golden also recorded three stolen bases.

August Filter was 2-3 with a triple and two RBI for Weldon Valley in a 14-4 loss to Denver Academy on Wednesday. Zander Braun was also 2-3 with a triple, and the sophomore scored twice.

#17 DOVE CREEK VS #32 ANTONITO

#17 DOVE CREEK VS #34 CENTENNIAL

A doubleheader sweep over Dolores (20-8, 12-1) on Tuesday gave the Bulldogs a three-game winning streak. Liam Hassell homered and drove in four in game one, while Cael Beanland gave up an unearned run in five innings to get the win in game two.

Antonito got its first win of the season on Monday, beating Center’s JV 9-5. Matthew Mascarenaz homered and drove in two for the Trojans.

Centennial was swept by La Veta 23-3 and 22-0 on Tuesday. The Rams were held without a hit in the doubleheader and committed 13 total errors.

#18 BACA COUNTY AT #8 HOLLY

Thursday was rough for Baca County, as the Wolverines were swept by Elkhart (KS) 16-3 and 15-4. Gunner Mackey doubled home two runs in the opener, and Carter Barnes went 2-2 with a triple and an RBI in the nightcap.

Holly’s winning streak reached double digits with a 13-2 victory over #21 Wiley on Wednesday. Devin Eaton was 3-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored.

#19 NUCLA VS #23 SARGENT

#19 NUCLA VS #26 SIERRA GRANDE

Nucla was swept by 2A #20 Ignacio (9-8, 14-2) on Tuesday, putting the Mustangs on a three-game slide. Keegan Tackett, Brycen Rummel, and Josh Platt had two RBI apiece in the opening loss. Rummel added another RBI in game two.

Paul Neal had two RBI for Sargent in the Farmers’ 13-3 win over Sierra Grande on Tuesday. Kade Temple and Tytus Atencio had one apiece. Luis Roybal, Maximus Roybal, and Jacob Portillo recorded one each for the Panthers in the loss.
