District Four opens tournament play today, while the other four will get started later in the week. We’ll take a look at the four quarterfinal games in that district, as well as a few of the other top match-ups in the classification for today. The rankings for that district are the seeds for the bracket, all others are from the Tuesday morning release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

DISTRICT FOUR

#8 MANZANOLA AT #1 EADS

Eads opened the season with an 18-0 win over Manzanola, with Case Nelson and Adyn Hough combining on the four-inning no-hitter. Nelson struck out eight over three innings, and Hough punched out all three hitters he faced. Only a hit batter stood in the way of a perfect game. Stockton Mitchek drove in four runs for the Eagles, while Hough and Spencer Uhland both scored three times. David Pettes was the lone Bobcat to reach base.

#5 STRATTON AT #4 MCCLAVE

McClave swept a doubleheader against Stratton just 10 days ago. Kielan Mallard earned the win in game one after allowing one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts. The Cards won that game 7-2. Three Eagle errors led to all of McClave’s runs being unearned. Grady Steerman stole three bases for Stratton in the loss. Drew Howe had two RBI for the Cardinals in a 7-5 game two win. Mallard and Ethan Bronniman each stole two bases for McClave, while Von Isenbart and Gage Levin had two apiece for the Eagles.

#6 WILEY AT #3 CHEYENNE WELLS

It’s been two weeks since Cheyenne Wells overcame an early 3-0 deficit against Wiley to beat the Panthers 9-5. Ethen Garay went 3-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored in the victory by the Tigers. Trey Scheler was also 3-3. Both stole four bases. Rhett McDonald was 2-3 with a double for the Panthers. He and Grant Mauch each stole three bags.

#7 BACA COUNTY AT #2 HOLLY

You don’t have to go back very far for the previous meeting between these two, as Holly just took a 9-6 win over the Wolverines on Friday. The Wildcats led 9-1 entering the top of the seventh before Baca County made things interesting. Truman King ripped his sixth home run of the season, giving him 15 in his career with the Wildcats. He and Tony Merez had two RBI apiece in the win. Dane Rosengrants drove in two for the Wolverines.

OTHER KEY GAME

#20 SARGENT AT #11 LA VETA

Both teams are unbeaten against fellow District One opponents. Sargent enters off a doubleheader split with Dolores on Saturday, winning the opener 5-4 and falling 11-3 in game two. Landon Velasquez scored twice in game one, while Kade Temple picked up two hits in the second game. La Veta rolled to a DH sweep of Custer County on Friday, 15-0 and 22-13. Lukas Ozzello tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener, and added four RBI to help his own cause. A nine-run bottom of the first proved to be the difference in game two. Logan Cortez went 2-5 with three RBI and three runs for the Redhawks.
