CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – TUESDAY

It’s still early in the week, but Tuesday brings with it a very deep schedule of top games. Several include highly-ranked 2A squads challenging 3A teams that also find themselves very high in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index. All rankings in the report come from the Tuesday morning release of the Index.

#1 FORGE CHRISTIAN VS 3A #2 COLORADO ACADEMY

Forge Christian ran its winning streak to 10 with a big 6-1 victory over 3A #7 Eaton on Saturday. Ben McLean homered and drove in two, while Easton Wilde went 3-4 with three runs scored. Burke Jasa gave up one earned on five hits in seven innings to get the win. Colorado Academy kept its winning streak alive, reaching nine straight in a 7-6 decision over Basalt. The Mustangs got the walk-off with a run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. Will McCandless had two hits, including a triple, and three RBI for the Mustangs.

#2 DAYSPRING CHRISTIAN VS #19 DAWSON SCHOOL

Logan VanIddekinge pitched a gem for Dayspring Christian last Thursday, giving up one earned on one hit in a 4-1 win over Clear Creek. He stuck out 10 and walked two. Gavin Bohl provided run support with two RBI. Dawson School broke out the big bats in a 21-1 win over Denver Academy on Thursday, giving the Mustangs a four-game winning streak. Jaxson Wheat was 3-3 with a triple and four RBI, while Henry Cox and Julian Sutton combined to go 4-4 with a double apiece. Cox drove in three and scored two, and Sutton had two RBI and three runs.

#4 PEYTON AT #21 ST. MARY’S

Peyton was scheduled for a doubleheader at #23 Burlington last Saturday, but wet weather left the field unplayable. That leaves the last action by the Panthers coming in a 12-7 win over 1A #11 La Veta last Wednesday. The Panthers scored five in the top of the seventh to get that victory. Zayden Ebbert and Noah Martin had three hits apiece and combined for five RBI. St. Mary’s split a DH with Woodland Park on Saturday, winning the back end by a 9-8 walk-off. Ryan Strub did a lot of the damage, driving in four runs.

#5 CEDAREDGE VS #22 NORTH FORK

The winning streak of the Bruins has reached 13 following a 10-0 shutout of Pagosa Springs last Friday. Caleb Hutto struck out a dozen and walked one in the five inning two-hitter. Logan Sanders went deep and drove in four to support his pitcher. After a four-game losing streak, North Fork has won its last four, including a 6-1 victory last Wednesday over Grand Valley. Mario Gama went 4-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. The senior also struck out 12 over six innings of shutout ball.

#7 HIGHLAND AT #20 WIGGINS (DH)

John Bingley and Stetson Hendren combined to hold 1A #2 Akron to three hits in a 5-4 victory over the Rams last Friday. Sawyer Morgan went 3-3 with a double and three runs scored for the Huskies. Wiggins dropped the back end of a doubleheader to Wray on Saturday, 15-5. The Tigers had won the opener 13-0 behind a combined three-hitter from Alex Tarango and Marcus Steinbar. Tarango delivered three RBI in the win.

#8 LAS ANIMAS AT #12 LIMON

The Trojans split a doubleheader with #16 Crowley County, eking out a 5-4 win in the opener, and falling 6-4 in the nightcap. Logan Servaes plated two runs and Kree Wallace swiped two bags in the victory. Damien Baca drove in three in the loss, and Wallace stole three more bases. Limon’s slide reached three with a 14-2 loss to 1A #3 Merino last Saturday. The Badgers gave up a 10-spot in the top of the first. Brody Scherrer was the lone Badger with more than one hit, as the junior went 2-3 with a double and a run scored.

#9 MONTE VISTA VS 3A #8 MONTEZUMA-CORTEZ

Monte Vista picked up a pair of 17-1 wins on Saturday, downing Buena Vista and Rangely to push its winning streak to seven. Kaden Mellott allowed one earned on two hits in five innings, with eight strikeouts in the win over Buena Vista. Judah Howe was 4-4 with a homer, a double, three RBI, and three runs scored in that contest. Chayse Bouet tripled and drove in three runs in the Rangely win. Montezuma-Cortez hammered out a pair of wins over Alamosa the same day, beating the Mean Moose 14-7 and 14-2. Samson Lein had three RBI in the opener. He homered and drove in three more in the nightcap. Darren Daves also homered, and Cory Carver was a round-tripper away from the cycle. Carver had four RBI in the win.

#10 PLATTE VALLEY VS 3A #11 STERLING

Platte Valley backed up a 6-5 win over Eaton last Thursday with an 8-0 blanking of 3A #5 Brush on Monday. Dagan Gomez walked two and struck out one in the complete game four-hitter. Hazen Weber and Cooper Moffatt had two RBI apiece for the Broncos. Five Sterling errors led to five unearned runs in a 6-3 loss to 4A #22 Silver Creek on Saturday. Dayten DiOrio was tagged with six runs on five hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. Caysen Bamford went 3-4 with two RBI for the Tigers.
