CLASS 1A BASEBALL REPORT – DISTRICTS

This weekend sees the Class 1A districts conclude, helping to set the regional field. Three of the five districts will finish up on Saturday, while the other two slug it out on Saturday. All rankings are according to the seeding in each respective bracket.

DISTRICT ONE AT IGNACIO HS (FRIDAY)

#1 DOVE CREEK VS #4 NUCLA

It’s only been a few days since these two hooked up in a doubleheader to end the regular season. Nucla won both ends by a single run, 11-10 and 12-11. The Mustangs scored three in the bottom of the seventh to walk off game one after Dove Creek had taken the lead with four in the top of the inning. Jake Hulst was 4-4 with two runs, while Jace Bonacquista went 3-3 with two RBI for Nucla. Brycen Rummel was 3-5. Treven Ivie led the Bulldogs by going 4-5, while Konner Spigner, Nic Aragon, and Frankey Montoya had three hits apiece.

The teams erupted for 15 combined runs in the final two frames of game two, with Dove Creek scoring four in the sixth and three in the seventh, and Nucla going for six in the sixth and walking it off with two in the seventh. Josh Platt hit a pair of doubles and tallied three RBI for the Mustangs. Ivie doubled and drove in four for the Bulldogs.

#2 LA VETA VS #3 SARGENT

La Veta grabbed the #2 seed in the bracket with an 11-1 win over the Farmers on Tuesday, as Logan Cortez went 3-4 with two doubles, five RBI, and two runs. Logan Tenorio added three RBI, and Matthew Gonzales scored three runs. Sargent was held to just one unearned run and two hits by Lukas Ozzello, who struck out seven in five innings.

DISTRICT TWO AT SPURGEON FIELD (SATURDAY)

#1 SIMLA VS #4 KIOWA

Ethan Kissam was 3-3 with three RBI in a 16-1 win over Kiowa back on April 17th. Treven Kochera and Wyatt Stanko both had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. T.J. Eurich and Caston Cox combined to hold the Indians to one earned on one hit in four innings. Austin Brogger had two hits, including a triple for Kiowa. Myles Erker had the lone RBI for the Indians.

#2 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN VS #3 ELBERT

Very early in the season, ECA swept a doubleheader from Elbert, 11-0 and 15-3. Nate Lucia and Levi Alexander had three RBI apiece for ECA in the opener, and Alexander gave up one unearned run on no hits, with eight strikeouts. Cole Nay reached on a walk and stole two bases for Elbert.

The Bulldogs committed seven errors in game two, leading to eight unearned runs. Matt Dooley, Sam Cornell, and Thomas Burian each had an RBI for Elbert in the loss. Landen Purdy went 3-3 for the Eagles with a homer, two doubles, three RBI, and three runs.

DISTRICT THREE AT FLATIRONS ACADEMY (FRIDAY)

#1 FLATIRONS ACADEMY VS #2 ROCKY MOUNTAIN LUTHERAN

These two played their regular season match-up on March 29th, with Flatirons Academy taking a 17-2 victory. Mateo Pope went 3-3 with a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored, and Noah Evans also went deep for the Bison. Noah Lile and Judah Sternhagen had an RBI apiece for Rocky Mountain Lutheran. Blake Harris had both of the Eagles’ hits.

DISTRICT FOUR AT LAS ANIMAS HS (SATURDAY)

#1 EADS VS #4 MCCLAVE

Eads just swept a doubleheader from McClave last Friday, with the Eagles winning a tough opener 2-0, and then running away with an 11-2 victory in game two. Eads got a one-hit shutout with 12 K from Case Nelson in the game one win. Kielan Mallard held the Eagles to just earned run on three hits with seven punch outs.

Adyn Hough gave up two unearned runs on three hits to get the win in game two. Hough struck out eight. Hough and Stockton Mitchek had two hits apiece. Reed Herrera and Elijah Solis were each credited with an RBI for the Cardinals.

#2 HOLLY VS #3 CHEYENNE WELLS

Halfway through their current 12-game winning streak, the Wildcats took a 13-2 victory over Cheyenne Wells. Truman King struck out 10 in 5.1 innings, and also went 3-4 with a homer, double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Devin Eaton was 4-5 with four runs. Trey Scheler had two hits for the Tigers, including a double. Scheler had the lone RBI for Cheyenne Wells.

DISTRICT FIVE AT PRAIRIE HS (FRIDAY)

#1 HAXTUN VS #4 OTIS

Haxtun swept a DH against Otis back in early April, with the Fightin’ Bulldogs taking wins of 5-2 and 13-2. Grant Statz had two doubles and two RBI in the opening victory, and Madden Larsen struck out nine in five innings. Paxton Davis had two hits and an RBI for Otis.

Kanin Koberstein, Ryan Davis, and Colin Cone combined to hold the Bulldogs to just two hits in game two, one a Mitchell Stivers double. JJ Ward drove in a run for Otis. Ryland Wolff starred for Haxtun, going 3-3 with five RBI.

#2 AKRON VS #3 MERINO

In a rematch of last year’s state championship clash, Merino won 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader in early April. After Akron tied it in the top of the seventh, Merino walked it off in the bottom half of the frame. Zachary Mackintosh homered for Merino, while Akron got two hits and two runs out of Jakzon Livesay.

Akron responded with an 11-6 win in the second game, scoring eight in the top of the seventh to earn the split. Livesay, Caleb Poss, and Jax Kusel had two RBI apiece for Akron. Coen Schmidt went 3-4 for Merino, who also got two RBI each from Isaac Poe and Tyler Everhart.
