CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – TUESDAY

As the end of the regular season draws near, games take on even more importance as teams jockey for the best possible postseason position. Some are fighting to just make the regional field. Here’s our look at some of those teams near or on the bubble. These are the Tuesday games, with rankings coming from the most recent CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

#11 CEDAREDGE AT #27 OLATHE

After dropping a 7-6 decision to #14 Ignacio in walk-off fashion last Thursday, Cedaredge bounced back on Saturday with a commanding 13-1 victory over Colten Hutto homered, doubled, and drove in three for the Bruins. Olathe has won two straight, including a 10-5 decision over Rangely on Saturday. Jayden Estrada tripled twice and drove in four for the Pirates.

#28 SEDGWICK COUNTY AT #40 HOLYOKE (DH)

Sedgwick County lost a lopsided doubleheader to #7 Highland last Friday, falling 21-0 and 16-1. Not only were the Cougars no-hit in game one, but the Huskies did not allow a baserunner in the three inning contest. Tate Renquist tripled and scored in game two, with Roman Kirk collecting the RBI. Holyoke remained winless after dropping a doubleheader to #21 Burlington on Saturday. The Dragons were held to two hits in a 14-0 opener, but had a 6-5 lead in game two before falling 11-6. Isaac McCormick and Cozner Deaver Ring had a double and two RBI apiece in that loss.

#30 ESTES PARK AT #2 DAYSPRING CHRISTIAN

Estes Park suffered a tough 4-2 loss to #26 Bishop Machebeuf on Saturday, with most of the damage happening in a three-run third by the Buffaloes. Isaac Hill had two hits for the Bobcats, and Matthias Westley added an RBI. Dayspring Christian won its sixth straight last Friday, beating #12 Monte Vista 17-8. Gage Davis had a monstrous effort, going 3-5 with six RBI for the Eagles.

#32 ROCKY FORD AT #37 CALHAN

Rocky Ford’s lost six in a row after dropping a 7-2 contest to #34 Colorado Springs Christian last Tuesday. The Meloneers were limited to three hits in the loss. Brock Burnside and Justin Fader had an RBI apiece in Calhan’s 18-2 loss last Tuesday to #17 Crowley County.

#33 MANUAL AT 3A #53 BRUCE RANDOLPH

Manual got its third straight win, beating Denver West 18-2 on Monday. Leo Zimmerman drove in three runs, while Jesus Marquez and Jake Carney had two RBI each. Zimmerman, Marquez, and Edgar Salas scored three runs apiece for the Thunderbolts. Bruce Randolph has lost five in a row, the last two by forfeit.

#36 SANFORD AT #39 HOEHNE

Sanford dropped a doubleheader to Ignacio its last time out, falling 8-4 and 27-7. A seven-run second inning proved to be the difference in the opener. Game two saw the Mustangs give up 12 in the first and 11 more in the second. Ryan Mortensen homered and drove in four for Sanford in that defeat. Hoehne dropped its doubleheader against #35 Rye last Tuesday, 10-0 and 6-1. The Farmers only mustered two hits in game one, and they committed five errors. They were held to one hit in the nightcap.

Tuesday also has some match-ups in the top portion of the Index, with #3 Peyton squaring off against #4 Fowler, #6 Yuma tangling with #7 Highland, and #13 SkyView Academy meeting up with #15 Front Range Christian. Denver Christian (#5), #8 Platte Valley, #10 Las Animas, and #14 Ignacio are also in action.
