CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY

BY: KERRY SHERMAN

Rain and snow impacted the Tuesday schedule, with some of the scrubbed games being moved to either Wednesday or Thursday. Some will not be made up, and a few actually got played. The slate of games is light for the next two days, but we’ll still take a look at some of the top match-ups, with the rankings coming from the Wednesday morning release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

WEDNESDAY

#5 DENVER CHRISTIAN AT 3A #2 COLORADO ACADEMY

Denver Christian made it four straight wins with victories over #16 Front Range Christian (9-0) and #12 Monte Vista (8-2) last Saturday. James Lord allowed three hits over 5.2 scoreless innings in the win over FRC and Nate Bovasso provided plenty of run support with three RBI. Bovasso turned around and homered in the victory over Monte Vista, driving in three more runs. Mason Reilly struck out 12 over five innings of work to earn the win. The Mustangs stopped a two-game slide with a 4-3 win over 3A #4 Resurrection Christian on Saturday. Kieran Delaney went 3-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Jordyn Bell worked with a lot of traffic, allowing nine hits and four walks in six innings, but only gave up two earned runs to pick up the victory. This is the front end of a home-and-home series, with Denver Christian hosting on Thursday.

#11 LIMON VS #22 ST. MARY’S

Limon saw its losing streak reach four, as #15 Wiggins pounded out a 13-2 win on Tuesday. The Badgers led 2-0 after the top of the first, but the Tigers took the lead with three in the bottom of the frame and never looked back, gaining the run-rule victory in the fifth. Brooks Scherrer and Brody Scherrer both doubled in the loss. Brody drove in one run and Logan Haflich drove in the other. The Pirates swept a DH from 3A Florence on Saturday, winning by scores of 14-2 and 16-5. Four Pirates had two RBI apiece in game one, backing Ron Karin, who struck out seven in four innings. St. Mary’s posted an 11-run top of the first in game two and was never pressured after that. Ryan Strub collected three RBI and four other Pirates had two each.

#18 CROWLEY COUNTY AT #24 BYERS

Crowley County suffered a DH sweep against #4 Fowler on Saturday, dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker in game one, and then falling 12-5 in the nightcap. Landon Smith went 2-3 with a run scored in the opener, and took the loss despite only allowing one earned run over seven innings. Derreck Buford was 4-4 with a double and four RBI in game two. Byers got back to .500 on the season with an 11-5 road win at Front Range Christian on Monday. Chas Butterfield went 4-4 with two triples and four runs batted in. He added three stolen bases. Kaden Bennett went the distance, allowing one earned run in seven frames.

THURSDAY

#13 SKYVIEW ACADEMY AT #16 FRONT RANGE CHRISTIAN

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, this meeting was pushed back two days because of weather. SkyView Academy enters it on a two-game winning streak, including an impressive 5-2 victory over Flatirons Academy, the #3 seed in the 1A Regional bracket. But, the Hawks have not played in more than a week, with a 26-2 win over Denver Academy coming on April 30. Chris Gallegos drove in eight runs in that victory, while Logen Meyers and Isaac Dove plated five runs apiece. Monday’s loss to Byers was the fourth in a row for Front Range Christian, who was held to just four hits in that defeat. Jake Dreiling had two of them. Nate McInturff had a double and two RBI.
