CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – WEEKEND
BY: KERRY SHERMAN
It’s the final weekend of the regular season in Class 2A, with the season ending after games on Tuesday. There are some very important games on the docket, including a top-10 showdown in a doubleheader on Friday, and another clash of highly-ranked teams on that same day. Saturday isn’t as top-heavy, but there are a number of big doubleheaders to be played. The rankings today come from the Friday morning release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.
FRIDAY
#1 FORGE CHRISTIAN AT #8 PLATTE V ALLEY
The top-ranked Fury continued its roll, picking up a 15th consecutive win on Thursday, beating The Academy 5-1 to complete the home-and-home sweep. Jonathan Tipton scattered seven hits over seven innings, allowing just one earned run to collect the victory for Forge Christian. Burke Jasa starred at the dish, going 2-3 with two triples, an RBI, and two runs. Platte Valley suffered its third loss in its last four games, dropping a 3-2 decision to 3A #21 Valley on Thursday. Valley scored the winning run in the top of the seventh, after the Broncos had tied it in the sixth. The Broncos were held to just one hit, a single by freshman Cooper Moffatt. His hit drove home Nick Silvas, who scored both of Platte Valley’s runs.
#4 FOWLER AT #9 LAS ANIMAS (DH)
Fowler’s been red-hot of late, winning 12 straight. The last two in that run for the Grizzlies were part of a doubleheader sweep of #18 Crowley County last Saturday. Fowler won the opener 3-2 behind a strong effort from Joe Salvo, who allowed one earned run on four hits in seven innings. Nicholas Higgs and Weston Johnson drove in a run apiece. Game two saw the Fowler offense, which had been quite over the final four innings of game one, explode for a 12-5 victory. Brock True was 3-5 with a double and two RBI, while Higgs added two RBI and two runs scored. Las Animas snapped a two-game slide with a DH sweep of #22 Swink last Friday. The Trojans won game one 7-0 and pulled out a 6-4 win in game two. The pitching of Damien Baca was the story in the opener, as the senior tossed a one-hit shutout. He walked four and struck out nine. Braydon Ortiz, Kree Wallace, Nicholas Duran, and Jesus Lopez all had two hits. The Trojans broke a 3-all tie in the second game, plating three runs in the top of the seventh, and then snuffing out a Swink rally in the bottom half of the frame. Ortiz had two more hits, and Baca added two RBI.
SATURDAY
#7 YUMA VS #21 BURLINGTON (DH)
The Outlaws have dropped two in a row, including a 7-5 extra innings affair against #5 Highland on Tuesday. Yuma tied it with a run in the bottom of the seventh, only to see the Huskies plate two in the eighth for the victory. Silas Baucke and Reyli Trejo combined for 15 strikeouts on the bump. Burlington hasn’t played since last Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Holyoke. The Cougars got a dazzling effort out of Zack Foose in game one. The lefty allowed two hits and a walk, and punched out 10 in the five-inning 14-0 win. He was also one of four Cougars with two RBI in the game, joining Scout Humrich, Rowdy Humrich, and Darian McDonough. Burlington had to come from behind in game two, as Holyoke led 6-5 through three innings. The Cougars scored the final six runs to grab the 11-6 win.
