CLASS 2A BASEBALL REPORT – FINAL ROUNDS

BY: KERRY SHERMAN

We’ve reached the final weekend of the baseball season, and Forge Christian is in the driver’s seat. The Fury are the only team in the bracket and must lose in what is numbered as Game 14 for the tournament to reach a true double-elimination. They will wait until Saturday to play in the game that could win them a state title, as Friday sees the consolation semifinal and final, with all of the final games played at Hobbs Field in Pueblo.

CONSOLATION SEMIFINAL (GAME 12) FRIDAY 10 AM

#8 MONTE VISTA (18-7) VS #6 DENVER CHRISTIAN (18-9)

Monte Vista had an interesting run last weekend, losing a 10-5 decision to Forge Christian in the quarterfinals to begin things. That contest was tied at 5-all before the Pirates allowed a five-spot in the bottom of the sixth. The Pirates then routed Peyton 16-0 in the first round of the consolation bracket. They only needed four innings to eliminate the Panthers. Kaden Mellott was 2-4 with three RBI, and five other Pirates had two RBI apiece. Mellott also got the win, allowing two hits in the shutout. Monte stayed in the fight with a 2-1 win over Fowler in the second round of the consolation, scoring the eventual winning run in the top of the fourth. Mellott got another win on the mound, needing only 76 pitches for the complete game victory.

Denver Christian dropped a 2-0 quarterfinal to Fowler last Friday, mustering only three hits in the process. Caleb Stork, Mason Reilly, and Elijah Whitfield each had a single. James Lord allowed two runs (zero earned) on five hits in six innings. The Thunder bounced back with a four-run first inning en route to a 6-3 win over Dayspring Christian in the opening consolation round. Trey Speir had two RBI in the win. Reilly struck out 14 in seven innings. Denver Christian outlasted Highland 13-9 to reach the conso semi. The Thunder had a 7-run fourth to grab control, but had to hold on after the Huskies plated five in the seventh. It was Nate Bovasso with four RBI leading the charge offensively, and Speir plating three. The duo also combined for seven hits.

CONSOLATION FINAL (GAME 13) FRIDAY 12:30 PM

#7 PLATTE VALLEY (18-10) VS GAME 12 WINNER

Platte Valley opened play with a 4-1 upset of #2 Dayspring Christian, with a two-run fourth being the difference maker. Cooper Moffatt had a double and three RBI to power the Broncos to the victory. That was in support of Hazen Weber, who only allowed an unearned run in seven innings. They made the semifinals with another tight win, beating Fowler 2-1 on Friday. Nick Silvas and Hudson Flummerfelt each drove in a run, and Dagan Gomez only allowed an unearned run on five hits in the complete game victory. In a bid to stay on the championship side of the bracket, PV was dominated by Forge Christin 10-0. The Broncos were held to two hits, singles by Moffatt and Jeremiah Molinar.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (GAME 14) SATURDAY 10 AM

#1 FORGE CHRISTIAN (24-4) VS GAME 13 WINNER

The Fury advanced to the finals with a 9-1 win over Highland in the semis. They blew things wide open with a five-run third. McLean and Brock Wycoff had two RBI apiece, backing a strong start from Jasa, who allowed one unearned run in six frames. Jasa allowed six hits and struck out six. Jonathan Tipton worked a scoreless seventh to close it out.
