SIX-MAN AND EIGHT-MAN PREVIEW – ZERO WEEK

Zero week has a light schedule, with three ranked teams in six-man and three in eight-man in action. Both classes will feature a game with two ranked teams.. Rankings come from the MHPR poll, and stats come from MaxPreps.

FRIDAY

SIX-MAN

#5 ARICKAREE/WOODLIN (0-0) AT CHERAW (0-0)

Last year… Arickaree/Woodlin outscored the Wolverines 14-0 in the fourth quarter and escaped with a 46-37 victory. Austin Wright threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 118 yards and another TD in the victory. Jorge Ramos added 53 yards on the ground, returned a kick for a score, and caught three passes for 42 yards. Wright led all defenders with 18 tackles, three of them sacks, and also blocked a kick. Keith Page notched eight tackles for the Bison.

Rhett Dutton threw for 79 yards and one touchdown for the Wolverines. William Ledbetter ran for 55 yards, and Sam Goheen caught a 65-yard TD pass. Ledbetter led the Cheraw defense with 10 tackles and fumble recovery. Jacob Herman tallied seven stops, and Goheen added six.

Series… tied at a win apiece.

#7 SIERRA GRANDE (0-0) AT #10 EADS (0-0)

Last year… Sierra Grande pulled out a 50-42 win over the Eagles at home in the opening round of the postseason. Jadyn Martinez caught 12 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers, while Rolando Najera snagged five for 69 and four TD. Martinez led all defenders with 18 tackles. He also had an interception.

Karsten Buller helped pace the powerful Eads rushing attack with 125 yards, and he added a pick-six on defense. Adyn Hough threw for 92 yards and a touchdown. Hough also tied Buller with six tackles.

Series… Sierra Grande owns a 2-1 lead, with wins in the last two meetings.

EIGHT-MAN

#1 HAXTUN (0-0) VS MELROSE, NM (0-0)

Last year… In what turned out to be a match-up of eventual state champions, Haxtun came up just short, losing 44-36. The Buffaloes came from behind with a 14-0 fourth quarter. Of the returning Fightin’ Bulldogs, only Zach Statz (four carries, seven yards) and Coleman Firme (two carries, six yards) carried the ball. Statz caught a 62-yard TD, and Chase Goddard caught one pass for 54 yards. Firme and Statz both had double digit tackles, 13 for Firme and a dozen for Statz. Corbin Andersen added nine, and Goddard notched seven.

Jaxon Odom had a monster day for Melrose, running for 258 yards and two scores, and he caught six passes for 109 yards and another TD. Melrose went on to post a 13-0 record on its way to its second straight title.

Series… last year was the first meeting between the two.

#5 MCCLAVE (0-0) AT #6 SEDGWICK COUNTY (0-0)

Last year... Mason Barr ran for one touchdown and caught another as McClave rolled to a 30-6 season-opening victory. Cope Meston also had a receiving TD. Barr led the defense with 10 tackles, Ryan Steinbrunn followed with seven stops, and JR Mungaray had six. He shared a sack with Meston.

Owen Harris led the Cougars with 47 yards on the ground, and Brady Mollendor added two catches for 39 yards and 18 rushing yards. Mollendor registered 10 tackles, while Harris (8) and Noah Harens (6) combined for 14. Harens had a sack.

Series… Sedgwick County leads 3-1, with McClave’s win last year snapping a three-game winning streak for the Cougars.
