CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – THURSDAY
BY: KERRY SHERMAN
With the weekend rapidly approaching, the calendar is filled with ranked teams getting high quality matches under their belts. Thursday night is no exception, with multiple matches between teams ranked in our latest MHPR Coaches and Media poll.

#1 MCCLAVE (4-0) VS 2A #3 SWINK (2-0)
McClave picked up a nice 3-0 win over #14 Cheraw on Tuesday, winning 25-19/14/15 to go 1-0 in High Plains League play. The Lady Cardinals have dropped one set in their first four matches. Swink was also dominant on Tuesday, handing Las Animas a 3-0 defeat, 25-10/15/19. Daisy Heberlie hammered 11 kills and Larriana Taggart served up eight aces. McClave has won all seven previous match-ups in the MaxPreps era, 3-1 last year.
#2 FLEMING (1-0) VS 2A #9 HAXTUN (1-1)
Fleming has been idle since beating Akron 3-0 last Thursday. Quincy Stull put away 14 kills in the win, and Ashley Bornhoft added a dozen. Ciana Lousberg racked up 33 assists. Haxtun split its opening triangular of the season, beating #12 Briggsdale in five and getting swept by 2A #1 Sedgwick County. Fleming has had the upper hand in this clash between neighbors, winning 14 of the last 17. However, Haxtun owns wins in two of the last three, including a 3-1 victory last season.
#7 HI-PLAINS (1-0) VS #19 GRANADA (2-0)
The Lady Patriots earned a 25-11/17/14 victory over Kit Carson on Tuesday to open the season with a “W”. They will now host another team out of that same league, with Granada making the trip north. The Lady Bobcats got a pair of wins in week one, beating Walsh and Holly in sweeps. Emri Marquez, Emersen Hernandez, and Camryn Coleman had six kills apiece in the win over rival Holly last Friday. Hi-Plains is 2-0 in recent match-ups, taking last year’s win in four sets.
#13 IDALIA (0-1) AT PRAIRIE (1-0)
Idalia couldn’t quite get over the hump in its opener against 2A #18 Holyoke, falling in a sweep (18-25, 19-25, 17-25). The Lady Wolves now travel to face a Prairie squad that handled 2A Union Colony Prep 25-17/9/9 in its opener. Idalia has won seven of the last 10 meetings, with last year’s 3-0 victory making its run six straight.
#15 SOUTH BACA (1-0) AT #21 CHEYENNE WELLS (1-0)
South Baca hasn’t played since beating Springfield 3-1 a week ago in its opener. Sarah Elmore racked up 19 kills and three blocks, while Abigail Anderson tallied 17 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks for the Lady Patriots. Eliana Gutierrez registered 23 assists. Cheyenne Wells opened its season one night later, sweeping Las Animas behind eight kills from Serenity Worley and five from Aubry Carroll. Last year’s 3-0 win by the Lady Tigers was their fourth straight victory in the series and eighth in the last dozen match-ups.
#18 FLAGLER (3-0) AT DEER TRAIL (0-3)
This is already the second match between these two squads, as they also met in last Saturday’s Miami-Yoder tournament, which was won by Flagler. The Lady Panthers cruised past Deer Trail 25-13 and 25-10, getting eight kills and five aces from Rylie Berry. The Lady Eagles did not win a set in their three matches. Counting Flagler’s time in the co-op with Hi-Plains, the program has won 28 of the last 29 meetings. They’ve won eight straight. This one counts in the Union Pacific standings.
#20 PRIMERO (0-0) AT KIM/BRANSON (1-2)
Primero is one of the last teams to get on the court, but the Lady Bulldogs will make up for lost time in a hurry. Starting on Thursday, they will play five matches over three days. This is the second match of the week for the Lady Mustangs, who were swept by Springfield on Tuesday. They have lost two straight since opening up with a win over Manzanola. Kim/Branson owns an 8-2 lead in the series, but the Lady Bulldogs have won the last two, including a 3-0 sweep last season.
PLATEAU VALLEY (5-0) AT 2A CAPROCK ACADEMY (3-1)
The Cowgirls have opened the season with a perfect 11-0 record in sets played, behind a balanced attack. Six players already have 10 or more kills, led by Kyanna Himes with 25 and Presley Hawkins with 24. Macy Bevan has 21. Caprock Academy bounced back from a loss to Cotopaxi last week with a four-set win over Olathe on Tuesday. Plateau Valley has won 20 of 22 in the series, but the Lady Eagles snapped a 12-match slide with a sweep victory last year.
ELBERT (6-1) VS PIKES PEAK CHRISTIAN (3-1)
Elbert has won five straight since a loss to The Colorado Springs School early in the Hanover tournament last Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs pulled out a five-set victory over 2A Peyton on Tuesday, overcoming a 1-2 deficit by winning the fifth set 15-13. The lone loss for Pikes Peak Christian so far is against Flagler in the Miami-Yoder tournament. The Lady Eagles got back on course with a sweep victory over Denver Jewish Day on Tuesday. Elbert has won nine of the last 10 against its fellow Black Forest opponent, with the lone loss coming two years ago. Overall, the Lady Bulldogs have won 21 of he last 26 with PPC.
