Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

This week we look at the 12 teams that were in the state tournament last season and see how the 2025 season is starting off for each of these teams. We will look at their record so far, who they have played and who they are going to play, and which players are starting to make their mark on the stat board.

Simla

The Cubs start off their 2025 season with a 2-1 record, getting the win over Valley 2-0 and Weldon Valley 2-0 with their first loss of the season being against McClave 2-1. Simla will be looking to get more wins through the rest of this week and will take on Byers today at home and then the team will travel to Limon on 8/30 to face the Badgers. League play will start for the Cubs next week on 9/4 against Thomas MacLaren School.

Sedgwick County

The Cougars start off their 2025 season with a 3-0 record, getting 3-0 wins over Briggsdale, Haxtun and Weldon Valley. Sedgwick County will face Fleming next week on the road on 9/2 and will be looking to keep their winning record intact. League games will not start for the team until the end of September, giving them time to perfect their game and get ready to take over the Lower Platte League.

Stat leaders for Sedgwick County after three games are Piper Buttenback (Jr) with 7 total blocks, Gracie Amendt (Sr) with 3 total blocks and 13 receptions,  Addison Renquist (So) with 3 total blocks and 12 assists, Ryen Carlson (Jr) with 7 serving aces, 23 digs, 24 assists, 9 kills and 13 receptions, Kinley Kizer (Sr) with 4 serving aces, Lainee Nein (Sr) with 4 serving aces, 15 digs, 17 assists, 32 kills and 15 receptions, and Daryn Nein (So) with 15 digs and 12 kills.

Lyons

The Lions played their first game this week and opened their season against Forge Christian and was able to get the win 3-1. Lyons will continue play this week and will be facing Loveland Classical today on the road and will be looking to get another win. Next week, the team will play Front Range Christian on 9/2 in a league game and GVCA on 9/3.

Leading the team so far on the stat board are Michaela Coleman (So) with 4 total blocks, 4 serving aces, and 13 kills, Layla Brown (So) with 2 total blocks and 3 serving aces, Poet MacKinnon (Jr) with 2 total blocks, Audrey Voss (So) with 2 serving aces, 7 digs, 1 assist, 5 kills and 17 receptions, Carmen Dumbauld (Fr) with 9 digs and 24 assists, Gwen Gadbaw (So) with 8 digs, 1 assists, and 23 receptions, and Annabelle Hay (So) with 8 kills and 12 receptions.

Swink

Swink starts their season with a 2-0 record getting wins over Fowler 3-0 in the first game of the season and of league play and beating Las Animas 3-0 in another league game. This gives the team a 2-0 overall and Santa Fe league record. The Lions will be looking to continue winning as they will take on the defending 1A State Champions in McClave today on the road and then the team will travel next week to Crowley County on 9/2.

Stat leaders for the Swink Lions so far are Daisy Heberlie (Jr) with 10 total blocks and 21 kills, Kashlynn Blasingame (Jr) with 8 total blocks, 5 serving aces, and 26 assists, Taylor Mendenhall (Sr) with 7 total blocks and 14 kills, Larriana Taggart (Jr) with 12 serving aces, 19 digs, 3 assists, 7 kills and 20 receptions, Briana McElroy (Sr) with 9 serving aces, 11 digs, and 30 assists, Jocelynn James (Sr) with 19 digs and 14 receptions, and Kylee Romero (Sr) with 15 receptions.

Colorado Springs Christian

The Lions start off their season against a tough opponent in Discovery Canyon where CS Christian fell 2-3. The team will be looking to bounce back for a 0-1 start and will be looking to add wins to their record. The Lions will travel to Eagle Ridge Academy on 9/2 and then will take on Liberty on 9/4.

Wiggins

Wiggins starts their season off so far with a 3-1 record. The team was able to get the win over Liberty Common 2-0, Weldon Valley 2-0, and Byers 3-0. The lone loss on Wiggins’ record is against McClave, the defending 1A State Champions, 0-2. The Tigers will be looking to add another win to their record today and will face Platte Valley today at home to finish the week. League play will begin for the team on 9/16 against Haxtun.

Rye

Rye had their first game this week and was able to get the win over St Mary’s 3-0. The team will continue play this week and will host Woodland Park today and will try to add another win to their record. Next week, the Thunderbolts will kick off games against Las Animas on 9/2, which will also be the first league game for Rye.

After their first game, stat leaders for Rye are Hayley Newitt (Sr) with 4 total blocks, Isabella Bond (Sr) with 1 total block and 9 kills, Sydney Smith (Sr) with 1 total block, Seine Roy (Sr) with 9 serving aces, 15 digs, 1 assists and 10 receptions, Kaylee Wilson (Jr) with 5 serving aces, 5 digs, 8 kills and 5 receptions, Olivia Donlon (Sr) with 4 serving aces and 12 assists, Gloriana Ruiz (So) with 4 digs, Reese Simpson (Fr) with 10 assists, Lauren Miller (Sr) with 2 kills and Taylor Pye with 8 receptions.

Del Norte

Del Norte begins their season with a 2-0 start, getting wins over La Veta 3-0 and Rocky Ford 3-0. Today the tigers will be traveling to Ignacio to face the Bobcats and to try to add another win to their record. Next week the team will host Custer County on 9/5 and will continue to keep their winning record. League games will start on 9/13 against Sanford and will be looking to be at the top of the Southern Peaks League.

Players who are at the top of the stat board so far for the Tigers are Addie Roepke (Sr) with 5 total blocks, Ady Ruybal (So) with 5 total blocks, Emma Parra with 1 total block, 20 digs, and 20 kills, Brynley Brown (So) with 12 serving aces, 26 digs, and 17 kills, Julia Trujillo (Jr) with 3 serving aces, 19 digs, and 4 assists, Autumn Gallegos (Sr) with 2 serving aces and 9 kills, Naylie Velasquez (Sr) with 33 assists, and Caleigh Sierra (So) with 24 assists.

Haxtun

The Haxtun Bulldogs start their season with a 1-1 start, getting the win in their first game against Briggsdale 3-2, but falling to Sedgwick County 0-3. The Bulldogs will be looking to add more wins to their overall record this week and will take on Fleming on 8/28 and Otis on 8/30. League play for Haxtun will begin on 9/9 against Caliche.

Vail Christian

The Saints begin their season with a win over North Fork 3-1. Vail Christian will try to keep their momentum going and will be looking for a win over Lake County on 8/29. The end of next week will begin league play for the team against Caprock Academy on 9/4 where the Saints will be looking for their third win and first league win.

Stat leaders for the Saints after their first game are Ryan Baron (Fr) with 1 total blocks, Betty Bartok (Sr) with 1 total block, 4 serving aces, 19 assists, and 10 kills, Stella Hawkins (Jr) with 1 total block, Tenley Brasington (Jr) with 4 serving aces, 8 digs, and 31 assists, Sam Bates (Jr) with 1 serving ace, 15 digs, 1 assists, and 29 receptions, Michelle Teague (Jr) with 15 digs and 20 receptions, and Mary McClarrinon (Jr) with 9 kills and 8 receptions.

Hoehne

Hoehne starts off their season with a 3-2 overall record. The Farmers were able to get wins over Las Animas 3-1, Sangre de Cristo 2-0, and La Veta 3-0. The losses for the team so far are against Monte Vista 1-2 and Sargent 0-2. Hoehne will be looking to add more wins today against Crowley County and then next week play will be against La Junta on 9/2.

Leading on the stat board so far for Hoehne are Paisley SanRoman (So) with 1 total block, 3 serving aces, and 8 digs, Kaylee Schlensker (Fr) with 1 total block, Braylee Foster 1 total block and 9 digs, Isabella Chacon (Sr) with 3 serving aces, and Mikenna Dakso (Sr) with 6 digs and 11 assists.

Sanford

The Mustangs start their season with a win over Gunnison 3-1. Sanford will continue their play today and will host Monte Vista and will try to add another win to their overall record and to their league record. The Mustangs will then travel to Pagosa Springs on 8/30 to round out the week.
