Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

This week we take a look at our top 16 ranked teams and see how the season is starting for them. We will see who the teams have played, who they beat, the teams that are challenging, and who on the team is making their mark on the stat board.

Sedgwick County

The Cougars start their 2025 season with a 3-1 overall record, getting wins over Briggsdale 3-0, Haxtun 3-0, and Weldon Valley 3-0. Their lone loss so far this season was against Fleming who beat Sedgwick County in 3. The team will be looking bounce back from their recent loss and add more wins to their record next week when they will take on South Platte on 9/11 and Burlington on 9/13.

Leading the team so far this season on the stat board are Piper Buettenback (Jr) with 7 total blocks, Gracie Amendt (Sr) with 3 total blocks and 13 receptions, Addison Renquist (So) with 3 total blocks and 12 assists, Ryen Carlson (Jr) with 7 serving aces, 23 digs, 24 assists, 9 kills and 13 receptions, Kinley Kizer (Sr) with 4 serving aces, Lainee Nein (Sr) with 4 serving aces, 15 digs, 17 assists, 32 kills and 15 receptions, and Daryn Nein (So) with 15 digs and 12 kills.

Wiggins

Wiggins starts their season with a 4-1 overall record, getting wins over Liberty Common 2-0, Weldon Valley 2-0, Byers 3-0, and Platte Valley 3-0, and a loss to McClave 2-0. The Tigers will have a tough opponent today as they will be traveling to Fleming to try and get another win added to their record. Next week the team will be traveling to Weldon Valley where they will be looking to get another win from the Warriors.

Simla

Simla kicks off their season with a 4-1 record so far, getting wins over Valley 2-0, Weldon Valley 2-0, Byers 3-0 and Limon 3-0 and falling to McClave but not without taking a set from them (2-1). The Cubs will be playing to add another win to their record today as they will be hosting Thomas MacLaren School. Then on 9/6 the team will travel to Merino in what will likely be a competitive game.

Stat leaders for Simla so far this season are Katie Gotschall (Sr) with 12 total blocks, Trenna Kocerha (Fr) with 9 total blocks, 12 serving aces, 80 assists and 32 kills, Kinlee Cox (Fr) with 6 total blocks, 8 serving aces, and 47 assists, Brynlee Amendt (Fr) with 7 serving aces, 29 digs, 41 kills and 29 receptions, Ava Leininger (So) with 46 digs and 77 receptions, and Carlee Cox (Jr) with 45 digs, 7 assists, 45 kills and 32 receptions. 

Swink

Swink currently has a 3-1 overall record with a 3-0 league record and are stilling 1st in the Santa Fe League. The Lions have been able to get wins over Fowler 3-0, Las Animas 3-0, and Crowley County 3-0 so far but has lost to the very tough McClave team 0-3. Swink will have a busy schedule this week as they will be facing Swallows Charter Academy tonight at home, then the team will travel to Sanford tomorrow 9/5 to take on the Mustangs. Next week, play for Swink will kick off at home against Hoehne on 9/9 where the team will be looking to keep their overall record and their league record on the winning side.

Leaders on the stat board for Swink so far this season are Taylor Mendenhall (Sr) with 15 total blocks, 10 serving aces, and 29 kills, Daisy Heberlie (Jr) with 14 total blocks, 27 digs, 31 kills and 43 receptions, Kashlynn Blasingame (Jr) with 10 total blocks and 46 assists, Larriana Taggart (Jr) with 15 serving aces, 39 digs, 4 assists, 12 kills and 57 receptions, Briana McElroy (Jr) with 12 serving aces and 49 assists, Jocelynn James (Sr) with 25 digs and 22 receptions.

Rye

The Thunderbolts are currently 3-0 on the season with a single league win under their belt, giving their league record a 1-0 start and outs the team in 4th in the Santa Fe League currently. So far, Rye has beat all their opponents 3-0, which were St. Mary’s, Woodland Park, and Las Animas. The team will be looking to keep their success going as they will host Pueblo Central tonight and then they will host Lamar on 9/6. Next week, the team will play another league game which will be against Crowley County on 9/9.

Leaders on the teams’ stat board are Hayley Newitt (Sr) with 6 total blocks, Isabella Bond (Sr) with 4 total blocks and 28 kills, Sydney Smith (Sr) with 2 total blocks, Seine Roy (Sr) with 17 serving aces, 41 digs, 5 assists and 38 receptions, Kaylee Walton (Jr) with 11 serving aces, 10 digs, and 17 kills, Olivia Donlon (Sr) with 9 serving aces, 21 digs, and 34 assists, Reese Simpson (Fr) with 35 assists, Taylor Pye (Sr) with 13 kills and 22 receptions, and Gloriana Ruiz (So) with 13 receptions.

Lyons

Lyons starts off their season with a perfect record of 4-0, getting wins over Forge Christian 3-1, Loveland Classical 3-0, Front Range Christian 3-0, and GVCA 3-0. The win Front Range Christian was the teams first league game of the season, giving the team a 1-0 start on their league record. The Lions will not play until next week but will be playing a league game against Clear Creek on 9/8, a non-league game against Ascent Classical Academy on 9/9, and then another league game against Gilpin County on 9/11.

Leading the team on the stat board so far this season are Michaela Coleman (So) with 14 total blocks, 6 serving aces, and 31 kills, Poet MacKinnon (Jr) with 4 total blocks, Carmen Dumbauld (Fr) with 4 total blocks and 64 assists, Layla Brown (So) with 13 serving aces, Annabelle Hay (So) with 10 serving aces, 16 digs, 7 assists, 22 kills and 28 receptions, Audrey Voss (So) with 23 digs, 15 kills and 33 receptions, and Gwen Gadbaw (So) with 20 digs and 1 assists.

Vail Christian

The Saints start off their season with two wins, giving the team a 2-0 overall record. The teams’ wins were over North Fork 3-1 and Lake County 3-0. Vail Christian will be looking for win number three today as they will Caprock Academy, and then on 9/6 the team will participate in the D’Evelyn Touney where they will start off against Aspen. Next week the team will travel to Buena Vista to play the Demons on 9/9.

Stat leaders so far for the team are Ryan Baron (Fr) with 1 total block, Betty Bartok (Sr) with 1 total block, 7 serving aces, 11 digs, 23 assists, and 14 kills, Mary McClarrinon (Jr) with 1 total block,  23 kills and 8 receptions, Tenley Brasington (Jr) with 7 serving aces and 43 assists, Michelle Teague (Jr) with 3 serving aces, 16 digs, 16 kills, and 27 receptions, and Sam Bates (Jr) with 20 digs, 1 assist and 32 receptions.

Colorado Springs Christian

Colorado Springs Christian starts off their season with an 0-2 record, falling to both Discovery Canyon 2-3 and Eagle Ridge Academy 0-3. The Lions will be looking to change their luck around today as they will be hosting Liberty. Next Week, C.S. Christian will then travel to Valley on 9/11 to take on the Vikings.

Sanford

The Mustangs are off to a strong start to their season with a 3-0 overall record, a 1-0 league record, and currently sitting in the 1st place spot in the Southern Peaks League. Sanford’s wins so far have been over Gunnison 3-1, Monte Vista 3-0 in a league game and Pagosa Springs 3-2. Tomorrow on 9/5 the team will host Swink and then on 9/6 they will host South Park. The Mustangs will be looking to keep their perfect record alive to end this week.

Highland

The Huskies start off their season with a 6-1 record, getting wins over The Pinnacle 2-0, Estes Park 2-0, Front Range Baptist 2-0, Frontier Academy 3-1, Northridge 3-0, and TPCA 3-2. Their lone loss so far this season was against Paek to Peak 2-0. Highland will be hosting SkyView Academy tomorrow to end the week and then will start next week hosting Windsor Charter Academy.

Leaders on the Highland stat board so far this season are Isabella Tiley (Jr) with 6 total blocks, 5 serving aces, and 18 kills, Madison Smith (Jr) with 4 total blocks, Austyn Bingley (Jr) with 4 total blocks, Leah Varra (Jr) with 10 serving aces, 21 digs and 36 assists, Ryleigh Wares (Jr) with 7 serving aces, and 22 digs, Anabelle Crider (Jr) with 59 digs and 6 assists, Morgen Lindstorm (Sr) with 17 assists, Abbie Martinez (Sr) with 12 kills,  and Sophia Martinez (So) with 13 kills.

Heritage Christian

The Eagles are currently 4-2 overall on the season. The teams’ wins come over their opponents Loveland Classical 2-0, The Pinnacle 2-0, Front Range Baptist 3-0 and Loveland Classical 3-0, while their losses where against Peak to Peak 1-2 and Frontier Academy 1-2. Tonight, Heritage Christian will travel to DCA to try to add another win to their overall record and their league record. On 9/5 the team will travel to Liberty Common and then next week play will start at Briggsdale on 9/9.

Leading the team so far on the stat board are Kristin Osborne (Sr) with 4 total blocks, 15 serving aces, 35 digs, 102 assists, and 15 kills, Abby Nauman (Sr) with 4 total blocks and 25 kills, Caleigh Smith (Fr) with 1 total block, Annabelle Loucks (Jr) with 25 serving aces, 43 digs, 43 kills and 46 receptions, Abby Leveillee (Sr) with 10 serving aces, 29 digs and 72 receptions, and Cadence Smith (Sr) with 4 assists and 37 receptions. 

Denver Christian

The Thunder start their season off with a 5-2 overall record, a 1-1 league record and are currently sitting in 2nd in the Metro League. The team lost their first game, which was also a league game, to Colorado Academy 3-1, beat Windsor Charter Academy 2-0, Rocky Mountain Lutheran 2-0, lost to Flatirons Academy 2-1, beat Front Range Christian 2-0, ACA 3-0 and Jefferson Academy 3-0. Denver Christian will be playing in a tournament on 9/6 where they will be looking to get more wins on their record, including over Vail Mountain and Buena Vista.

Stat leaders for Denver Christian are Naralie Bohannon (Sr) with 6 total blocks and 25 kills, Amina Weber (Jr) with 3 total blocks, 10 serving aces, 31 digs, 38 kills and 47 receptions, Sloan Huscroft (Jr) with 2 total blocks, Breegan Austin (Sr) with 7 serving aces, 35 digs, 11 assists, and 50 receptions, Hadley Pellegrino (Sr) with 5 serving aces and 34 assists, Addison Ruter (Sr) with 27 digs, 21 kills and 50 receptions, and Anna Price (Sr) with 38 assists.

West Grand

West Grand is currently 8-1 on the season. After losing the first game to Plateau Valley 0-2, the team has gone on an eight game win streak to beat Dove Creek 2-0, Moffat County 2-1, Hayden 2-0, Summit 3-2, Gilpin County 3-1, Cedaredge 3-2, Clear Creek 3-0 and Mancos 3-1. The Mustangs will play one more game on 9/9 against North Park before they play their first league game against Vail Mountain on 9/19.

Leaders on the teams stat boards are Jocelyn Holmes (Jr) with 13 total blocks and 35 kills,  Cora Osborne (So) with 8 total blocks, Amber Williams (Jr) with 4 total blocks, Kara Gonzalez with 22 serving aces, 89 digs, 15 assists, and 133 receptions, Brooke James (Sr) with 19 serving aces, 69 digs, 47 kills and 119 receptions, Brooke Terryberry (So) with 17 serving aces, 75 digs, 66 kills, and 144 receptions, Karla Gonzalez with 89 digs, 15 assists, and 133 receptions, Matti Hayes (Sr) with 115 assists, and Teagan Bruchez (Jr) with 41 assists.

SkyView Academy

The Hawks were able to win their first five games before losing their most recent game against Woodland Park 3-1, making their overall record 5-1. SkyView Academy’s wins have been over DSST: College View 3-1, The Pinnacle 3-0, Frontier Academy 2-1, Englewood 2-0 and KIPP Denver Collegiate 2-0. The Eagles will be traveling to Highland on 9/5 to try and get another win on their record and start their league record off with a win. Next week the team go to Kennedy on 9/8 to face the Commanders and then they will host STEMSHR on 9/10.

Stat leaders for SkyView Academy are Evelyn Gilbert (So) with 11 total blocks, Emma Francavilla (Jr) with 7 total blocks, Mei Li Scholl (Sr) with 6 total blocks, 21 serving aces, 41 digs, 2 assists, 34 kills and 64 receptions, Ellie McLaughlin (So) with 18 serving aces and 18 kills, Kaylyn Belkowski (So) with 10 serving aces and 40 receptions, Taylor Bales (Jr) with 79 digs, 2 assists and 68 receptions, Lyla Kostiuk (Jr) with 38 digs and 98 assists, and Evelyn Gilbert (So) with 40 kills.

Rangely

The Panthers are currently 4-1 on the season with wins over Hayden 2-0, De Beque 2-0, Grand valley 2-0 and 3-0. The lone loss on their record so far was from Plateau Valley where they lost 0-2. This weekend, Rangely will play Caprock Academy on 9/5 and then the team will face North Fork on 9/6. Both games will be road games for the Panthers.

Holyoke

Holyoke begins their season with a 4-2 overall record and lost their first league game against Merino 0-3. The other loss for the Dragons was against Fleming 0-3. The teams’ wins have been over Idalia 3-0, Brush 3-0, DCA 3-0 and Otis 3-2. The  team will play their next league game next week on 9/9 at home against Akron.
