
Class 2A Football Preview-Week two
We kicked things off last week with Zero week but now the rest of the state gets going. After zero week we did see some changes to the rankings. We here at MileHigh Prep Report are ready to kick things off this season with a great weekend of Football. Rankings used are from Media/Coaches Poll.

#1 Wellington (0-0) at Fort Lupton (0-2), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Wellington is yet to kick off their 2025 Season. This will be their first game of the season on the road. Wellington will once again look to be lead by their rushing attack. QB Tanner Gray is back to lead the way for the Eagles. Gray threw for 764 passing yards and 9 TDs while rushing for 691 yard and 13 rushing TDs. RB Kyle Kisner looks to take over as the feature back after rushing for 721 yards and 14 TDs a year ago. WR Tyler Shaffer will also return for the Eagles coming off a solid junior year which saw him catch 10 passes for 206 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively Tyler Shaffer (102 tackles) leads the way for the Eagles defense but also look for Matt Brown (85 tackles) and Seamus Pikes (84 tackles) to have big seasons for the Eagles.
Fort Lupton opened their 2025 season with a 14 to 10 loss to D’Evelyn. This was a tightly contested game that came down to the fourth quarter with both teams getting a touchdown. Fort Lupton offensively had some success passing the ball at QB Josiah Gonzales threw for 73 yards but threw 3 INTs. RB Dominick Martinez did have a good day rushing for 92 yards on 22 carries. Defensively Fort Lupton played tough holding D’Evelyn to just 14 points. Donovan Bushman (13 tackles & 4 TFL), Harold McClain (11 tackles), and Joel Valadez (11 tackles) lead the Fort Lupton defense.
Last year…Wellington jumped out to a quick 21 to 0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Wellington got the 48 to 6 win over Fort Lupton.

#2 Classical Academy (1-0) vs Florence (0-1), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…The Classical Academy opened their 2025 campaign with one of the better games in Class 2A. TCA would earn the 34 to 17 victory over Eaton. Offensively, TCA had a big day through the air as QB Jackson Smetana made his varsity start at QB. Smetana threw for 219 yards and 2 passing TDs. WR Hayden Gustafson would be his main target hauling in 3 receptions for 111 yards and 1 TD. The rushing attack which racked up 106 yards was powered by RB Jackson Schipfer who rushed for 46 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively TCA had key stops when it mattered keeping Eaton off the board. TCA was led on defense by Hayden Gustafson who had 15 tackles along with Henry Hoyman who picked in another 10 tackles.
Florence would open their 2025 season with a tough loss at home to Kent Denver. Florence never recovered after giving up 20 points in the first quarter and would fall 40 to 12. Florence offensively leaned on RB Noah Howard who rushed for 162 yards and 2 TDs. QB Ryan Robinson had his first start at QB and threw for 40 yards and 2 INTs while rushing for 69 yards. Defensively Florence will look to improve this week against another top offense. Florence last week was led in tackles by Joey Hess (7 tackles) and Ayden Jennings (6 tackles).
Last year…TCA jumped out to a quick 14 point lead last year then added another 17 in the 2nd quarter to defeat Florence 45 to 15.

#3 Strasburg (1-0) vs Montezuma-Cortez (1-0), Saturday at 11am
Last Week…. Strasburg kicked off the 2025 season with a 34 to 7 win over 1A Platte Valley. Strasburg got a top 10 win to start the year and will look to build on the success. Offensively, Strasburg had over 300 yards of total offense. QB Brody Hopwood had a solid day throwing for 170 yards and 1 TD. WR Cameron Manahan was his top target with 58 yards receiving. The rushing attack had a solid day racking up 142 yards of rushing. RB Jorge Parra led all rushers with 63 yards and 1 TD. Defensively Strasburg forced 2 turnovers in the game a pair of fumble recoveries by Cameron Manahan and Ethan Feeman. Freeman also led all tacklers with 11 tackles and Reagan Rosier pitched in another 10 tackles.
Montezuma-Cortez opened 2025 with a convincing 48 to 0 win over Crownpoint NM. Montezuma-Cortez had things rolling on the ground racking up 199 yards of rushing. RB Parker Conrad had a good day rushing for 107 yards and 2 TDs. QB Cody Case kicked off his varsity campaign throwing for 67 yards and 2 passing TDs. WR Wyatt Oliver was Case main target catching 3 passes for 53 yards and a TD. No defensive stats were available for Cortez but they did pitch the shutout.
Last Year… Strasburg and Montezuma-Cortez was a 1 TD game after the first quarter, but Strasburg blew things open in the 2nd scoring 20 points and never looking back. Strasburg would win 47 to 13 over Montezuma-Cortez.

#5 Eaton (0-1) at 3A Pueblo Central (0-1), Saturday at 2pm
Last Week … Eaton kicked the 2025 season off with a tough 34 to 17 loss to #2 Classical Academy. Eaton would take an early lead but were not able to sustain. Eaton offensively had a big day racking up over 325 yards of total offense. QB Andrew Loyd had a solid day passing throwing for 88 yards but was unstoppable on the ground rushing for 222 yards and 2 TDs. WR Ely Madaleno had the most receiving yards with 36. RB Jackson Savona led the rushing attack with 51 yards on 21 carries. Defensively Eaton held TCA to just 211 yards of total offense. Eaton was led by Ben Lawhead (9 tackles) and Vinnie Juarez (8 tackles).
3A Pueblo Central opened 2025 with a 25 to 0 loss to Discovery Canyon. No stats have been entered for the game.
Last Year… Pueblo Central would get the 32 to 7 win over Eaton. Pueblo Central got the ground game going to snag the win.

#6 Lamar (1-0) vs Sterling (1-0), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Lamar opened their 2025 season with a blowout win over Raton NM 41 to 7. Lamar had running clock in the 3rd quarter and cruised to the win. Lamar offensively had a big day racking up over 300 yards of total offense. QB Jacob Dunning had an impressive day throwing for 252 yards on 73% completion, and 3 TDs. WR Cason Pollart had a career day catching 4 passes for 118 yards and 2 TDs. RB Adriel Gonzalez led the rushing attack with 90 yards and 1 TD. Defensively Lamar flew around, forcing 6 sacks (2 by Izaias Miera & Kilian Losa) and 3 turnovers. Lamar was led in tackles by Kilian Losa (10 tackles & 2 TFL) and Braxen Shelton (8 tackles).
Sterling kicked their 2025 season off with a shootout win over Valley, 49 to 32. Sterling held a lead going into the fourth quarter at 35 to 8 but Valley would come screaming back outscoring Sterling 24 to 14. Offensively Sterling had a huge day racking up over 500 yards of total offense. QB Memphis Dempcy had a breakout game throwing for 285 yards and 4 TDs while rushing for 46 yards and 1 rushing TD. WR Hunter Hershfeldt had a career day catching 7 passes for 134 yards and 1 TD. The rushing attack also had a solid day racking up 227 yards and led by RB Braydon Evans who rushed for 74 yards and 1 TD. Defensively Braydon Evans (6 tackles) and Hunter Hershfeldt (6 tackles) led the way for the Tigers defense.
Last Year…Lamar a season ago would win in a tightly contested game 30 to 22.

#7 Basalt (1-1) vs 3A Rifle (0-2), Friday at 7pm
Last Week… Basalt technically played their second game of the 2025 season last week but officially hit the field for the first time against Evergreen. Basalt would fall in their opener to 3A Evergreen 16 to 15. Offensively Basalt would struggle at times but did get 123 yards on the ground. RB Jude Webb lead the rushing attack with 85 yards and 1 TD. QB Dylan Johnston made his first career start and threw for 42 yards in the game. Defensively Basalt made some big plays holding Evergreen out of the endzone. Connor Anthes (14 tackles) would lead all tacklers for the Longhorns and would get help from Chris Hays (9 tackles) and Dylan Johnston (9 tackles).
3A Rifle has played a pair of games to start the 2025 season. Rifle fell in their opener to 4A Golden 30 to 20 and last week fell to 4A Grand Junction 34 to 7. Rifle will look to use the experience and capture their first win. Offensively Rifle will look to get things sorted out. Last week QB Alex Gonzalez threw for 74 yards and 1 TD while rushing for 32 yards. WR Ryland Lane was the top target catching 4 passes for 68 yards and 1 TD. Defensively Rifle was led by Cache Garcia (9 tackles) and Yadier Loya (8 tackles).
Last Year… Basalt would capture the 42 to 12 win over Rifle.
Series history… Basalt and Rifle are tied at 5-5 for the series, since 2004
#9 Berthoud (0-1) vs Moffat County (0-2), Friday at 7pm
Last Week… Berthoud faced off against the defending Class 3A State Champions and fell in a tightly contested game 17 to 7. Offensively Berthoud did struggle at times but did find some success. QB Evan Schmidt had some success throwing for 85 yards, 1 INT, and 1 TD. WR Jayce Newbill was the top target in the passing game catching 9 passes for 62 yards and 1 TD. Defensively Berthoud played outstanding holding them to just 17 points and giving them a shot at the win. Sam Smith (13 Tackles) and Samuel Whitaker (12 tackles) led Berthoud in Tackles.
Moffat County kicked off their season during zero week and currently sit at 0-2. Moffat County lost in zero week to Kennedy 24 to 20 and last week lost to 3A Steamboat Springs 55 to 0. Moffat County will look to right the ship and get a signature win. On the season QB Jax Nelson has 113 yards passing and 2 INTs. WR Kenyen Camilletti has 4 receptions for 42 yards. Moffat County offense has been led by their rushing attack and RB Owen Hill is leading the way with 200 yards on 27 carries and 1 TD. Defensively Jose Silva leads the defense with 10 tackles and 2 TFL and Curtis Kuberry is pitching in with another 6 tackles and 2 TFL.
Last Year…Berthoud jumped out quickly scoring 21 points in the 1st quarter and never looked back in rout to a 48 to 8 win over Moffat County.
