Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

With the momentum of the season starting to get into full swing, we take a look at the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index and see how the start of the season has gone, who upcoming opponents are, and who is making their way to the top of the stat boards.

Sanford        

The Sanford Mustangs sit at the top of the CHSAA Seeding Index with a perfect 5-0 overall record, a 1- league record, and are 1st in the Southern Peaks League. Sanford has beat Gunnison 3-1, Monte Vista 3-0, Pagosa Springs 3-2, Swink 3-0 and South Park 3-0. The team will be looking to maintain their record this week as they will take on Del Norte on 9/13 in a league game.

Dolores

Dolores currently has a perfect 5-0 record, a 1-0 league record and are currently 2nd in the San Juan Basin. So far this season the Bears have beat Norwood 2-0, Center 2-0, Salida 2-0, Montezuma-Cortez 3-0, and Nucla 3-0. Dolores will be looking to keep their perfect record in tact and will be going to Mancos on 9/11 and then will host Ouray on 9/13. Next week the team will play Nucla on 9/16 and will be looking to add another win to their record.

Stat leaders for Dolores are Addyson Wyatt with 6 total blocks and 55 assists, Aubree Wyatt with 2 total blocks, 30 digs, 7 assists, 70 kills, 32 receptions, Kendall Chavez 2 total blocks, 14 serving aces, 42 digs, 33 kills, 41 receptions, Madi Thornbrugh with 13 serving aces, 56 assists, and 12 kills, and Layla Mitchell with 9 serving aces, 52 digs, and 57 receptions.

Rye

The Thunderbolts currently have a perfect record of 6-0 overall, a 2-0 league record and are 2nd in the Santa Fe League. The last three games Rye won were against Pueblo Central 3-0, Lamar 3-1, and Crowley County 3-0. The team will be playing to keep their perfect record going this week and will play Swink in a league game today at home. Next week, Rye will play in another league game on 9/16 against Hoehne.

Thunderbolt stat leaders are Hayley Newitt with 9 total blocks, Isabella Bond with 8 total blocks and 64 kills, Resse Simpson with 3 total blocks, 11 serving aces, and 78 assists, Seine Roy with 24 serving aces, 105 digs, 14 assists, and 89 receptions, Kaylee Walton with 21 serving aces and 31 kills, Olivia Donlan with 54 digs and 70 assists, Trinity Felthager with 30 digs and 36 receptions, and Taylor Pye with 36 kills and 45 receptions.

Lyons

The Lions of Lyons are the final team on this list who still have a perfect record in tact for this season. The team is currently 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league play, sitting 1st in the Mile High League. The Lions have beat Forge Christian 3-1, Loveland Classical 3-0, Front Range Christian 3-0, GVCA 3-0, Clear Creek 3-0, and Ascent Classical Academy 3-2. Lyons will be looking to keep their perfect record going and will be taking on league opponent Gilpin County on 9/11, and then next week, they will face DCA on 9/16.

Leading the team on the stat board are Michaela Coleman with 25 total blocks and 71 kills, Carmen Dumbauld with 8 total blocks, 16 serving aces, and 165 assists, Layla Brown with 7 total blocks, Annabelle Hay with h21 serving aces, 47 digs, 11 assists, 51 kills and 80 receptions, Audrey Voss with 15 serving aces, 59 digs, 39 kills and 74 receptions, and Gwen Gadbaw with 45 digs, 6 assists, and 78 receptions.

Holyoke

Holyoke is 5-2 on the season with a1-1 league record and they are currently 3rd in the Lower Platte League. The Dragons lost last week to Merino 0-3 but was able to get the win over Akron 3-2. The team will be playing Haxtun on 9/13 and will be looking to add another win to the record. Next week, Holyoke will start next week hosting Cheyenne Wells on 9/16.

Swink

Swink is currently 5-2 overall, 5-0 in league play and are 1st in the Santa Fe League. Last week, the Lions got the win of Swallows Charter Academy and Hoehne both 3-0 but lost to Sanford 0-3. Swink will play today against the undefeated Rye team in Rye and will be looking to take away the Thunderbolts perfect record. Next week, Swink will travel to Walsenburg on 9/16.

Stat leaders for the Lions are Taylor Mendenhall with 25 total blocks, 14 serving aces, and 46 kills, Daisy Heberlie with 17 total blocks, 58 digs, 49 kills, and 72 receptions, Kashlynn Blasingame with 15 total blocks, 40 digs and 74 assists, Larriana Taggart with 24 serving aces, 77 digs, 6 assists, 25 kills and 93 receptions, Briana McElroy with 13 serving aces and 77 assists, and Jocelynn James with 52 receptions. 

Denver Christian

Denver Christian lost their most recent game, which was against Forge Christian, 0-3, but was able to get wins over Buena Vista 3-1, Strasburg 3-0, and Sedgwick County 3-1. This games the Thunder have an 8-3 overall record, a 1-2 league record, and are 4th in the Metro league. The team will not have any other games until next week in which they will play at SkyView Academy on 9/18.

Stat leaders for the Thunder are Natalie Bohannon with 6 total blocks and 25 kills, Amina Weber with 3 total blocks, 10 serving aces, 31 digs, 38 kills, and 47 receptions, Sloan Huscroft with 2 total blocks, Breegan Austin with 7 serving aces, 35 digs, 11 assists, and 50 receptions, Hadley Pellegrino with 5 serving aces and 34 assists, Addison Ruter with 27 digs, 21 kills and 50 receptions, and Anna Price with 38 assists.

Buena Vista

The Demons are currently 5-2 overall, 1-0 in league play and are currently 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. Buena Vista fell to Denver Christian 1-3 last week but was able to beat Vail Mountain 3-0 and Vail Christian 3-0. The Demons will be looking to add more wins to their record to end this week and will play Trinidad on 9/13 and then will play Center on 9/16.

Sedgwick County

Sedgwick County is 5-2 on the season after beating Vail Mountain 3-1 and Ignacio 3-1 and losing to Denver Christian 1-3. Today the Cougars will play in South Platte and will be trying to flip their luck and start a winning streak. To end the week, Sedgwick County will play Burlington on 9/13, and then next week the team will play Chase County on 9/16.

Leading the team on the stat board for the Cougars are Piper Buettenback with 10 total blocks, Lainee Nein with 6 total blocks, 4 serving aces, 23 digs, 24 assists, 42 kills and 36 receptions, Gracie Amendt with 5 total blocks, Ryen Carlson with 7 serving aces, 35 digs, 28 assists, 14 kills and 21 receptions, Kinley Kizer with 4 serving aces, Addison Renquist with 19 digs and 17 assists, and Daryn Nein with 12 kills and 21 receptions.

Telluride

The Miners are currently 5-1 overall on the season, 2-0 in league play and are sitting in 1st in the San Juan Basin. Last week, Telluride was able to beat Dove Creek 3-0, Pagosa Springs 3-0, and Ridgway 3-0. The Miners will travel to Ignacio on 9/13 for a league game and then will play Dolores in another league game next week on 9/18.

Telluride’s stat leaders are Ella-Rose Aplin with 10 total blocks and 24 kills, Delia Noel with 6 total blocks, 43 digs, 65 kills and 75 receptions, Tori Sanders with 5 total blocks and 34 kills, Lori Gleria with 16 serving aces and 50 receptions, Hazel Noel with 9 serving aces, 35 digs, and 59 assists, Ford Fenton with 6 serving aces, 75 digs, and 118 receptions, and Lillyann Mahoney with 47 assists.

West Grand

The Mustangs are 8-1 so far on the season. The team lost their first game of the season but has since won every game after, giving them an 8-game win streak. With no league games yet under the teams’ belt, West Grand will play their first league game next week and the team will be hosting Vail Mountain on 9/19.

Stat leaders for the Mustangs are Jocelyn Holmes with 13 total blocks and 35 kills, Cora Osborne with 8 total blocks, Amber Williams with 4 total blocks, Karla Gonzalez with 22 serving aces, 89 digs, and 133 receptions, Brooke James with 19 serving aces, 69 digs, 47 kills and 119 receptions, Brooke Terryberry with 17 serving aces, 75 digs, 66 kills, and 144 receptions, and Matti Hayes with 155 assists.

Ignacio

The Bobcats are 4-2 so far on the season, are 1-0 in league play, and are currently 3rd in the San Juan Basin. In September, the team has been able to beat Mancos 3-1, Front Range Christian 3-0, and Strasburg 3-0 but fell to Sedgwick County 1-3. Ignacio will continue to play league games this weekend and will play Telluride on 9/13 at home. Next week the team will travel to Norwood where they will play another league game on 9/18.

Leading the team on the stat board this season are Alleah Neil with 33 total blocks, Kelly Sirios with 12 total blocks, 21 serving aces, 108 digs, 143 assists, and 46 kills, Juliann Avila with 7 total blocks, Tarah Baker with 10 serving aces, 93 digs, 24 assists, and 127 receptions, Lainee Bradley with 10 serving aces, 70 digs, and 40 kills, Lainee Bradley with 70 digs, Maliyah Martinez with 9 assists, 40 kills and 62 receptions, and Reggi Gustafson with 47 receptions. 

Highland

The Huskies are 7-2 after getting wins over TPCA 3-2 and SkyView Academy 3-0 and losing to Windsor Charter Academy 1-3. Highland also has a 1-0 league record with the win over SkyView and puts the team 3rd in the Mile High League. Tonight the team will travel to Flatirons Academy for a league game and then will end the week on 9/13 hosting Brush.

Huskies’ stat leaders are Isabella Tiley with 8 total blocks, 17 serving aces, and 34 kills, Madison Smith with 4 total blocks and 24 kills, Austyn Bingley with 4 total blocks, Leah Varra with 19 serving aces, 39 digs and 8- assists, Ryleigh Wares with 16 serving aces and 42 digs, Annabelle Crider with 83 digs and 8 assists, Morgen Lindstorm with 46 assists, and Abbie Marinez with 29 kills.

Wiggins

The Tigers are currently 5-2 on the season and 1-1in September, losing to Fleming 1-3, and beating Weldon Valley 3-0. Wiggins will play their first league game next week against Haxtun on 9/16 where they will be looking to get a win on their overall record and their league record.

Leading the stat board for Wiggins is Tenleigh Lorenzini with 9 total blocks, Serenity Hawkins with 7 total blocks, Brooke Schmidt with 5 total blocks and 26 kills, Kellie Vicchrilli with 8 serving aces, 40 digs, 7 assists, and 58 receptions, Saia Hawkings with 7 serving aces, 35 digs, and 22 receptions, Karsyn Kerr with 6 serving aces, 35 digs, 31 kills and 44 receptions, Jaydin Busch with 63 assists, and Kallie Green with 46 assists.

Simla

The Cubs are 5-2 so far on the season, getting a win over Thomas MacLaren School 3-0 and falling to Merino 0-3 to start September. Simla is currently 1-0 in league play after beating Thomas MacLaren and are currently 1st in the Black Forest League. Simla will try to continue to add wins to their overall record to end the week and will host McClave on 9/13. Next week, Simla will travel to Calhan on 9/16 to play in a league game.

Leading the team on the stat board are Katie Gotschall with 16 total blocks, Trenna Kocerha with 11 total blocks, 18 serving aces, 42 digs, 109 assists, and 49 kills, Haylee Easler with 11 total blocks, Brynlee Amendt with 10 serving aces and 42 receptions, Kinlee Cox with 8 serving aces and 82 assists, Ava Leininger with 62 digs and 118 receptions, and Carlee Cox with 62 digs, 8 assists, 64 kills, and 52 receptions.

Vail Christian

Vail Christian currently has a 6-2 overall record with a 1-0 league record and are 1st in the Western Slope League. The Saints were able to get wins over Caprock Academy 3-0, DSST: College View 2-0, Lake County 2-0, and D’Evelyn 2-0, but fell to Aspen 0-2 and Buena Vista 0-3 in September. Vail Christian will continue play this week on 9/12 and will play Meeker in a league game. Next week, the team will play Roaring Fork on 9/16 at home.

Leading Vail Christian on the stat board are Ryan Baron with 11 total blocks, Mary McClarrinon with 7 total blocks and 43 receptions, Stella Hawkins with 4 total blocks, 13 serving aces, and 32 kills, Tenley Brasington with 19 serving aces, 32 digs, and 96 assists, Betty Bartok with 14 serving aces, 64 assists, and 33 kills, Sam Bates with 57 digs, 12 assists, and 78 receptions, and Michelle Teague with 33 digs and 57 receptions.
