BY: KERRY SHERMAN

Friday gives us a busy slate of matches involving teams currently ranked in the MHPR Coaches and Media poll. Saturday’s schedule isn’t quite as loaded, but the one match that has ranked opponents should be a banger.

FRIDAY

#4 STRATTON (3-0) AT #13 CALICHE (5-0)

Stratton hasn’t played in more than a week following last Thursday’s sweep of Genoa-Hugo/Karval that moved the Lady Eagles to 2-0 in the Union Pacific. Sophie Isenbart led an attack that featured six hitters collecting multiple kills with 10. Camory Wedel directed that onslaught with 17 assists. Caliche earned its second straight sweep and third of the season on Tuesday against 2A Haxtun, giving the Lady Buffs a win in their first LPAA match. Hallie Lewis and Ryann Svoboda had 10 kills and 11 digs apiece.

#9 EADS (5-1) VS WILEY (3-3)

Eads has been off since sweeping Miami-Yoder last Friday. It was the third straight sweep victory and ran the winning streak of the Lady Eagles to four. Bailey Sierra led a deep attack with 11 kills, and the junior also racked up 43 digs. Peyton Eder added 27 digs. Wiley had its two-match winning streak snapped last Saturday by Cheyenne Wells, who picked up the win in five sets. The Lady Panthers trailed 2-1 before forcing the fifth with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

#10 HI-PLAINS (5-2) AT #11 FLAGLER (5-0)

Hi-Plains snapped a two-match slide with a sweep of 2A Limon on Tuesday. The Lady Patriots got the win with set scores of 25-16, 25-16, and 25-21. Flagler remained unbeaten with a sweep of #8 Evangel Christian, who also entered Thursday night’s contest undefeated. The Lady Panthers have not dropped a set to this point.

#12 PLATEAU VALLEY (8-0) AT NORTH PARK (2-6)

The sweeps have been piling up for Plateau Valley, who earned its seventh of the season last Saturday against Norwood. Macy Bevan led the way with nine kills, followed by Presley Hawkins with eight, and Kyanna Himes with seven. North Park lost its fourth straight on Tuesday, falling to 2A #14 West Grand in a sweep. Magdalena Moya paced the Lady Wildcats with seven kills. Brooklynn Weber and Paige Solano recorded 12 digs apiece.

#14 PRAIRIE (6-0) VS BRIGGSDALE (0-7)

A share of first place in the North Central is at stake for Prairie, who got a league win on Wednesday against Peetz. The Lady Mustangs won that contest in three, with Hannah Kugler putting away 11 kills. Nicole Ludgate racked up 21 assists. Briggsdale couldn’t get into the win column, falling to #3 Fleming in a sweep on Thursday night. A win on Friday would get the Lady Falcons within a game of the league lead.

#15 GRANADA (6-1) AT CHERAW (1-2)

Granada ran its winning streak to four with a win over 2A Las Animas on Thursday. Each win in the streak has been in three sets. Cheraw got its first win of the season last Tuesday, sweeping La Veta. The first two matches of the season for the Lady Wolverines were against ranked opponents.

#16 CHEYENNE WELLS (5-2) AT WALSH (1-6)

Cheyenne Wells had its three-match winning streak come to an end on Tuesday when the Lady Tigers were swept by McClave in High Plains league play. Evan Scheimer led the Lady Tigers with four kills, and Aubry Carroll added three. Walsh dropped its third straight on Tuesday, as the Lady Eagles were swept in Ark Valley action by Springfield. Walsh has already played four league matches and is 1-3 in those contests.

#17 GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (3-3) VS KIT CARSON (2-5)

Following a brief two-match skid, Genoa-Hugo/Karval got back into the win column with a four-set victory over 2A Limon on Thursday. It was the first Union Pacific league win of the season for the Lady Pirates, and the second straight over the Lady Badgers. Heading into Thursday night’s clash with Springfield, Kit Carson was riding a high after breaking a three-match slide with a win over Limon last Tuesday. The Lady Wildcats lost the first set in that match and then roared back to win the last three.

SATURDAY

#1 MCCLAVE (9-0) AT 2A #3 SIMLA (5-2)

Going into this rematch of a contest in the Wiggins tournament, the Lady Cardinals have won 21 consecutive sets, with the only one they’ve lost all season coming against Simla. They handled South Baca on Thursday, allowing a total of 34 points in the sweep. Simla had won three straight following that loss to McClave, but the Lady Bear Cubs were swept by #2 Merino last Saturday. Carlee Cox put away 13 kills in that loss, while Trenna Kochera and Brynlee Amendt added 12 and 10, respectively.
