Class 1A Football Preview-Week Four

Week 3 is in the books, and it was a wild week of games.  We again continue to see the rankings changes as two new teams join the rankings this week.  Highland & North Fork rejoin the rankings after falling out.  Rankings used are from the MileHigh Prep Report Media/Coaches Poll.

#1 Limon (2-0) vs 2A Bennett (0-3), Saturday at 1pm

Last Week…Limon had a bye last week.  Limon is coming off impressive back-to-back wins.  Limon defeated C.S Christian in week one 41 to 14 and defeated Flatirons Academy in week two 41 to 13.  Limon has been powered by their rushing attack so far racking up 521 yards of rushing.  RB Camdyn Tacha leads the way with 191 yards and 2 TDS and RB Jacob Jaklich is #2 in rushing with 102 yards and 1 TD.  QB Aiden Kollath has been solid passing the ball going 11 of 18 for 132 yards and a TD.  Defensively Drey Tacha (11 tackles) and Jacob Jaklich (11 tackles) are leading the Badger defense.

Bennett is coming off an 46 to 9 loss to 2A #6 Lamar.  Bennett has not started the season the way they hoped going 0-3.  Offensively they are hoping to get the rushing attack going.  On the year Bennett has rushed for 226 yards.  RB Tommy Cearns lead the way with 170 yards and RB Ethan Jordan is #2 in rushing with 50 yards.  QB Kenney Jordan will look to improve down the stretch throwing for 84 yards and 5 INTs.  Defensively Bennett will look to improve.  The Tigers will lean on Isaac Adams (17 tackles) and Caycen Scholz (13 tackles) to lead the defensive improvement.

Last Year…Limon defeated Bennett 54 to 8.

#3 Forge Christian (3-0) vs 2A Kent Denver (2-0), Saturday at 1pm

Last Week…Forge Christian played another solid game defeating 2A D’Evelyn 42 to 6.  Forge Christian is getting excellent play from QB Jack Widdifield who threw for 139 yards on 13 of 20 passing and 1 TD.  The ground attack had its best day of the year rushing for 358 yards as a team and 5 TDs.  RB/WR Quentin Torres had an excellent day rushing for 168 yards and 3 TDs and catching 5 passes for 65 yards and another TD.  RB Hayden Hall also contributed to the rushing attack with 55 yards and 1 TD.  Defensively Fury have yet to give up over 15 points on the year.  Sammy Granillo (9 tackles & 1 TFL) and Jack Widdifield (8 tackles & 1 TFL) led the Fury defense last week.

Kent Denver is coming off a 47 to 27 win over 1A Denver Christian last week.  Kent Denver struck quick last week, scoring 14 points in the second quarter before adding another 27 points in the second quarter.  Kent Denver then held on for the 20-point win.  Kent Denver was balanced in their offensive attack last week passing for 231 yards and rushing for 265 yards.  QB Yianni Balafas led the passing attack with 231 yards and 5 TDS while rushing for 87 yards and 1 TD.  WR Colton Meade was the top target catching 3 passes for 70 yards and 1 TD.  The rushing attack was powered by RB Seb Meyers who rushed for 162 yards and 1 TD.  Defensively Caleb Fay (7 tackles) and Brandon Cifuentes (7 tackles) led the Kent Denver defense.

Last Year… Forge Christian was dominate in their win last year defeating Kent Denver 50 to 6.

#4 Wray (2-1) vs 2A #7 Brush (2-0), Friday at 6pm Game of the Week

Last Week… Wray lost their first game of the season falling to out of state opponent Scott KS 34 to 6.  Wray will look to bounce back against a bigger school and look to get the offense going.  Wray hopes to get the rushing attack going rushing for just 70 yards last week.  Look for RB Bryson Lewis and WR Aaron Tena to be leaders this week.  Defensively Wray did do plenty of things well holding Scott KS scoreless in the 1st Quarter and giving themselves a shot during the game.  Bryson Lewis (10 tackles), Brody Richards (9 tackles), and Lance Buoy (8 tackles) were the defensive leaders for the Eagles last week.

Brush had a bye last week.  Brush is currently 2-0 on the season, coming off a 29 to 22 win over University last week and a 28-20 win over Fort Morgan on week 1.  So far on the season Brush has been powered by their rushing attack racking up over 640 yards of rushing.  RB Ritchie Bruno has powered the rushing attack with 313 yards and 3 TDs.  RB Jolani Thomas has also pitched in with 118 yards and 1 TD.  QB Eric Rico has also contributed to the rushing attack adding 114 yards and 3 TDs while throwing for 43 yards.  Defensively Ritchie Bruno (10 tackles) and Andrew Herrera (10 tackles) has led the Beetdiggers defense. 

Last Year…Wray picked up the hard-fought defensive win over Brush 28 to 0.

#6 Burlington (2-0) vs 2A #6 Lamar (3-0), Friday at

Last Week… Burlington is coming off a bye.  Burlington is 2-0 on the season picking up a win during zero week of Platte Valley 30 to 28 and during week 2 defeated Lakin KS 42 to 6.  Offensively it has been all rushing for the Cougars racking up 731 yards of rushing.  RB Jason Saucedo has led the ground attack so far with 431 yards and 4 TDs.  RB Scout Humrich (106 yards and 3 TDs) and RB Anthony Estrada (59 yards and 2 TDs) have also pitched in with the ground attack.  Defensively Anthony Estrada (17 tackles) and Scout Humrich (11 tackles) have led the Burlington defense.

Lamar improved to 3-0 on the season blasting Bennett 46 to 9 last week.  Offensively Lamar was powered by the passing attack.  QB Jacob Dunning went 16 of 23 for 231 yards and 4 TDs last week.  WR Cason Pollart was Dunning top target catching 6 passes for 115 yards and 3 TDs.  The ground attack racked up 119 yards and 2 TDs and was powered by RB Adriel Gonzalez (70 yards & 2 TDs).  Defensively Lamar held Bennett to just 119 yards of total offense.  Maverick Medina (12 tackles & 3 TFL) and Izaias Miera (10 tackles & 1 TFL) powered the Lamar defense.

Last Year…Lamar escaped with the 7 to 6 win over Burlington.  This was a defensive slugfest last year.

#7 Yuma (2-0) at Torrington WY (1-1), Friday at 6pm

Last Week… Yuma is coming off a bye.  Yuma is 2-0 on the season picking up a 21 to 7 win over Chase County NE during week 1 and picked up a 31 to 15 win over North Fork during week 2.  Yuma on the season has been powered by the rushing attack racking up over 480 yards rushing on the ground.  QB Iann Duran has led the way with 215 yards rushing and 4 TDs and has also led the passing attack with 111 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Christian Thomson (132 yards & 4 TDs) and RB Daden Beauprez (70 yards) have also contributed to the rushing attack.  Defensively the Outlaws have been led by David Covarrubias (12 tackles) and Brodie Kallweit (11 tackles).

Torrington is from Wyoming, and they are currently 1-1 on the season.  They are also coming off a bye.  Last season Torrington went 4-5 and made the Class 3A playoffs falling in the first round.

Last Year…Yuma secured a defensive win over Torrington 8 to 3.

#8 Highland (2-1) vs Denver Christian (1-2), Friday at 7pm

Last Week… Highland has now won back-to-back games and secured a signature win defeating Wiggins last week 47 to 20.  Highland used a strong second half effort to secure the win last week, scoring 28 second half points and giving up just 6.  The rushing attack led the way for the Huskies racking up 316 yards and 3 TDs.  RB Elijah Elder led the way for Highland with 156 yards.  QB Tyler Varra also had a big day throwing for 61 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for 79 yards and 2 TDs.  WR Brogan Palmer was the top target catching 5 passes for 97 yards and 2 TDs.  Defensively Highland was led by Wyatt Chase (12 tackles) and Brogan Palmer (7 tackles).

Denver Christian is coming off a 47 to 27 loss to 2A Kent Denver.  Denver Christian dug themselves a hole going down 41 to 7 in the first half.  Denver Christian did bounce back in the second half outscoring Kent Denver 20 to 6.  Denver Christian had some success running the ball racking up 188 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Quinn Barkema led the way with 80 yards and 1 TD and RB Daniel Copeland also pitched in with 46 yards and 1 TD.  QB Cole McCabe also had some success throwing the ball passing for 96 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs.  Defensively Denver Christian was led by Quinn Barkema (10 tackles) and Austin Fitzgerald (8 tackles).

#9 North Fork (2-1) at 2A Banning Lewis (1-2), Saturday at 11am

Last Week… North Fork secured the 21 to 7 win over Monte Vista and improved to 2-1 on the season.  This game had two rain delays and turned into a defensive slugfest.  Offensively it was the rushing attack that led the way for North Fork.  RB Joe Hollembeak powered the way with 102 yards and 1 TD.  QB Braeden Flores also pitched in with 64 yards.  Defensively for the Miners it was a pair of defensive TDs that helped them get the win a TD by Alex Csere & Bo Eves.  Leading the way for tackles was also Bo Eves with 14 tackles but also Derick Sievertsen, Tate Fister, and Joe Hollembeak all had 10 tackles.    

Banning Lewis got into the win column last week securing a come from behind victory over Sterling 22 to 21.  It was the passing attack that powered the Stallions to the win.  QB Sam Early threw for 260 yards and 2 TDs in the game while also rushing for another 22 yards.  WR Jordan Jones had a big day catching 7 passes for 156 yards and 2 TDs.  RB/WR Dylan Skinner was the top rusher for Banning Lewis rushing for 26 yards but also catching 4 passes for 45 yards.  Defensively three players for Banning Lewis had over 10 tackles.  Jordan Jones (21 tackles), Caleb Aikin (15 tackles), and Mason Antisdale (14 tackles) led the Banning Lewis defense. 

Last Year…Banning Lewis secured the 14 to 12 victory over North Fork.

#10 Flatirons Academy (2-1) at Estes Park (1-1), Friday at 7pm

Last Week… Flatirons Academy got back into the win column and secured an early signature victory over Peyton 24 to 6.  Flatirons Academy scored 24 points in the first half and it was all they needed to get the win.  Offensively QB Caleb Doughty had a big day throwing for 93 yards and a TD while rushing for another 54 yards and 2 TDs.  WR Jack Joyner was the top target catching 6 passes for 86 yards and a TD.  The rushing attack was powered by RB Elijah Ricca who rushed for 135 yards in the game.  Defensively Flatirons Academy held Peyton to just 116 yards of total offense.  Isaiah Figueroa (10 tackles) and Ryker Clubb (7 tackles) led the Bison defense.

Estes Park is coming off a bye last week and is currently 1-1 on the season.  Estes Park picked up a week 1 win over Middle Park 45 to 0.  Week 2 they lost to Denver Christian 44 to 0.  No stats have been entered in for Estes Park on the season.

Last Year…Flatirons Academy picked up a blowout win over Estes Park 41 to 0.
