
CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – WEEKEND

It’s another loaded slate for the weekend, with almost every team in this week’s MHPR Coaches and Media poll. Beginning next week, we shift to the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index as the metric for the Class 1A reports.

FRIDAY
#4 OTIS (5-2) AT GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (5-4)
Otis ran its winning streak to three, all inside the YWKC, with a sweep victory over Bethune on Tuesday. It was the 24th straight victory for the Lady Bulldogs against the Lady Bobcats. Genoa-Hugo/Karval enters off a tough five-set loss to 2A Burlington on Thursday. The Lady Pirates lost 18-25, 26-24, 29-31, 25-19, 12-15. Otis has won the last two in the series, with the Lady Pirates having had a four-match winning streak prior to those losses.
#5 CALICHE (6-0) AT WILEY (3-5)
This is Caliche’s first match since sweeping Stratton last Friday, a win that vaulted the Lady Buffs into the poll. Hallie Lewis (12), Ryann Svoboda (8), and Alexis Breidenbach (7) led the attack in that victory. After a small hot streak, Wiley has lost its last three, including a sweep loss at South Baca on Tuesday.
#8 EADS (6-1) AT #15 GRANADA (9-1)
Eads hasn’t seen action since sweeping Wiley last Friday, a match that saw Kara Wilson (9) and Bailey Sierra (8) combine for 17 kills. Sierra added a team-leading 25 digs. Granada pushed its winning streak to seven with a sweep of 2A #5 Swink on Thursday. The Lady Bobcats won the third 26-24. Eads has won the last three meetings with Granada and owns a 23-2 record against the Lady Bobcats in the MaxPreps era, dating back to 2007.
#10 HI-PLAINS (7-2) AT IDALIA (2-5)
The Lady Patriots needed five sets against 2A Wray on Tuesday to keep its winning streak alive at three. Hi-Plains trailed 2-1 before coming back to win the fourth 25-19 and the fifth by a 15-10 count. Cambria Seaman hammered 24 kills, and Brianna Rueb added 13. Alexis Harvie surpassed the 1000 career assist mark with 25 in the match. She has 220 on the season. It’s been almost two full weeks since Idalia suffered a three-set loss at McClave. Bristal Robertson had 10 kills in that match. The rest of the Lady Wolves combined for eight. Idalia has beaten Hi-Plains 13 matches in a row.
#12 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (7-1) AT LA VETA QUAD
After having been dealt its first loss of the season by Flagler last Thursday, ECA got back into the win column on Thursday night, sweeping Hanover. Ellie Wagner recorded 18 kills in that victory, and Alyssa Costain racked up 25 assists. The quad will include La Veta (1-6), Sangre de Cristo (3-7), and 2A Center (5-5).
#13 PLATEAU VALLEY (10-0) AT 2A #11 VAIL CHRISTIAN (8-2)
The Cowgirls picked up their fourth straight sweep victory of the season on Wednesday, beating De Beque to remain perfect on the campaign. They served up 17 aces, seven by Kyanna Himes. Vail Christian took care of Roaring Fork in four sets on Tuesday, with Mary McClarrinon (15) and Betty Bartok (10) combining for 25 kills.
#14 PRAIRIE (8-0) AT 2A #14 HOLYOKE (7-2)
Prairie nearly blew a 2-0 lead on Thursday at Kimball (NE), before getting back on track to win the fifth 15-6. This is the toughest test for the Mustangs to date, as Holyoke has won three straight and five of the last six. Two of the last three for the Lady Dragons have gone five, including their win over Cheyenne Wells on Tuesday.
#17 CHEYENNE WELLS (6-3) VS CHERAW (3-3)
Cheyenne Wells led Holyoke 2-1 on Tuesday, with both wins coming in extras, but could not hold on. The Lady Tigers threw a block party, recording 14 total blocks, five by Bailey Scheler and four by Brinley Hyle. Following three losses in its first four matches of the season, Cheraw has won its last two. The Lady Wolverines swept Las Animas on Tuesday to get back to .500 on the year.
SATURDAY
#2 MERINO (8-0) AT KIT CARSON (3-7)
Merino had few troubles on Tuesday in a sweep victory over Weldon Valley. The Lady Rams allowed a total of 33 points in the match. Kit Carson suffered its second straight loss on Tuesday, falling to McClave in a sweep. The Lady Wildcats also had a match against Walsh on Thursday, but the results have not been reported.
#3 FLEMING (8-1) AT WELDON VALLEY (3-7)
Fleming’s winning streak reached four on Thursday night with a sweep of Peetz. It was the 42nd win in a row for the Lady Wildcats over Peetz in the MaxPreps era dating back to 2007. Weldon Valley never really got out of neutral in its loss to Merino, falling for the fifth time in its last seven matches.
#4 OTIS VS #17 CHEYENNE WELLS
Otis leads the series 3-0, with a pair of four-set victories the last two seasons.
#7 STRATTON (3-1) VS AKRON (5-4)
Sophie Isenbart had 15 kills in Stratton’s loss to Caliche last Friday, and the senior added four total blocks. The Lady Eagles haven’t been on the court since that defeat. Akron beat Lone Star in five sets on Wednesday, marking the fifth straight time the Lady Rams have gone five. They’re 3-2 in that stretch.
#8 EADS VS SOUTH BACA (6-3)
South Baca improved to 4-0 in the Arkansas Valley with sweep wins over Wiley on Tuesday and Holly on Thursday. The Lady Patriots are the defending league champions, but this one is a non-league tilt with the Lady Eagles.
#9 SARGENT (8-0) VS CENTENNIAL (1-4), PRIMERO (8-0)
Sargent host both Centennial and Primero in a triangular, with the featured match pitting the Lady Farmers against Primero in what could be a fight between unbeatens. For Sargent, its the first action in two weeks, since the Lady Farmers swept Antonito and Creede. Centennial got its first win of the season last Saturday, beating Mountain Valley in a sweep. Primero hosted Cotopaxi on Thursday and welcomes in a solid Custer County squad on Friday.
#10 HI-PLAINS VS BRIGGSDALE (0-8)
Briggsdale had a rough go last weekend, losing North Central league matches to Fleming in three and Prairie in four. This will be the fourth straight match for the Lady Falcons against teams in the MHPR poll.
#11 FLAGLER (5-1) VS LONE STAR (4-4)
Flagler looks to get the sour taste of its first loss of the season to Hi-Plains last Friday, out of its mouth. The Lady Panthers lost the final set 25-2. Sydnie Berry (9) and Lexi Witt (8) combined for 17 kills. They were also the top two of the top defenders, with Witt digging 19 balls, and Berry getting 16 up. Lone Star’s loss to Akron snapped a three-match winning streak for the Lady Longhorns. The latter of those came on Tuesday in a sweep Peetz.
